1 1/8" rings? Odd size, every one I have ever found was either 1 1/4" or 1 1/2"

Roger, I'm with you on this one! This weight thing appears to be going beyond practical and over the top!

2643. Re: Two Piece Rod--Help!
The airlines are getting more relaxed about fishing rods on board. I have traveled extensively with many "carry-on" rods domestically and internationally with some of them way to long for the overhead compartments, these they let me put in the stand up coat closet. However, most of my rods do fit within most overhead compartments.

2644. Re: Cork Jig
Not familiar with a 1 1/2" jig, I only do fly rods so use the 1 1/4" exclusively. As you need approx. 1/8" to fill the gap, have you looked at 1 1/2" PVC pipe? I believe it is very close to 1 1/4" ID.

You cannot sand the carbon fiber weave "down:! It is made up of thread like filaments and will only very badly abraid if sanded! The epoxies that are recommended work very well and as Tom Kirkman has pointed out a number of times, Helmsman Spar Urethane gives a very nice high gloss finish. Don't know what benefit one would get from CA?

2647. Re: Cork Jig
Jim, I use a thin plastic material (it is pieces of old xray film I got from my dentist) that is .008 thick. When I make the cut across the ring, I place a piece of the film in the cut on each side. This fills the kerf area where the cork was removed by the blade. I do this for each subsequent cut, which keeps the diameter the same as the original while cutting, thus each segment is exactly the

Yeah David, that is the "Jewlers saw." Problem with it is trying to keep from breaking the very very thin blade, especially when slicing cork into thinner discs.. One must keep a supply of blades on hand.
Mike, one of the saws I have is a Gyros Brass Back Razor Saw." Kerf is .008 60 extra fine teeth per inch.

The gray woven comes close, it is actually a combination of a gray and black weave.

2650. Re: Cork Jig
The Zona is NOT the only one that works in the jig! There are a number of fine saws that are only .008 thickness that some of us use. I do use shims as I make my cuts so that I compensate for the reduction caused by the saw kerf as I make additional cuts. This is most important when cutting segments of 6, 8 or 12, as the cumulative effect of the kerf compounds! The shims I use are .008 plastic s

Almost impossible to find woods that will match the blank color, most are much lighter. The green woven graphite reel seat inserts come pretty close. A bare blank on a fly rod reel seat would be very difficult to make work unless the blank is very large to start with, which is not normally the case. Matching all the metal items is quite simple, if you source them all from the same supplier and ma

2652. Re: USPS or UPS
I have had good experiences with all 3 of the major shippers. As mentioned earlier, be sure you pack the item securely in a sound tube or carton and insure it. I have never had to collect on the insurance, maybe lucky.

Many good hardware stores sell both metal and nylon sleeves in varying sizes. Ours are in nuts and bolts section.

2654. Re: Black Cork Grips?
The simple answer is, there is no black cork! There is "burnt cork" which has some black in it but more of a very dark brown. Black carbon fiber could be your best option as mentioned above.

What ever you decide, do a test wrap and finish on the blank portion that will be under the grip area, then you can see the effects.

The rod generally is not smooth enough to eliminate the possibility of having air under the label. Even though the air is very slight, it usually manifests itself as a haze. The epoxy creates a very smooth (glass like) surface , so that the decal is crystal clear. This is especially true of matte finish blanks.

I find that the easiest and more effective method for me is to, turn the rod over and then using the rod itself as a "straight edge" it is quite easy to see if a guide(s) is off to one side or the other. They should all be centered under the blank with none off to one side or the other I find this way more effective then trying to line them up with them on top of the rod., and you wont

2660. Re: CA finsih tips?
Even better then waxed paper (if you get wax on the surface it can give you problems) use poly plastic sheets, ie. any piece of plastic bags or such, best clear not with ink on it! Do it from below as Roger describes.

Decal Connection has not offered waterslide for quite some time (many months at least), however their peel and stick is a newer very thin decal that works beautifully.

I use it on cork fly rod grips all the time. One good coat seals and stays none glossy, add more coats and you can achieve a gloss. Does not damage. Cork is a tree bark.

Perma Gloss might be a better idea then wrap epoxy as it scratches easily.

Of course this would get me out of most heavy Blue Water rods. Though I build primarily for trout and Steelhead fishermen.
