2611. Re: Threadmaster
Sounds like you are mixing it too fast and introducing the bubbles into the mix. Try mixing it very slowly and when thoroughly mixed, pour it out onto aluminum foil in a saucer. As it spreads out you will be able to see the bubbles and they will dissipate better with the broader surface. I also then use a straw to blow on the mix which pops the bubbles. At this point the mix should be very clear

This started out with the "Question of the day being, whats gained by spending X or 10X on guides for a rod?" The above responses pretty well cover the point that it is not just friction that determines an appropriate guide. Elements like durability, corrosion resistance, etc come into play.
Not to open a whole new thread, but the same question could be asked about every component

2613. Re: Best RPM for a dryer
For drying only, slow is better then fast, to much speed and it creates a centrifugal force that can cause smoothness problems.

Bill, the Forhan is not a "wrap on top of a wrap." In simple terms, it is a a couple of wraps around the neck of the guide a a few behind the guide. The article is pretty clear on the process! I use it on all single foot guides, as nothing worse then being fishing somewhere remote and having a guide pull out. It is fast and secure. I only build fly rods.

2615. Re: Epoxying Whole Rod?
Jess, I see what your talking about, but really suspect it is not guide wrap epoxy. All the brands I'm familiar with stay way to soft to take any kind of scuffing scratching or especially rail damage. I also agree it does not look like Perma Gloss.

I hope you are not talking about guide wrap epoxy!! It is not appropriate for that purpose. Too soft and damageable, Perma Gloss or Lumi Seal are far better to coat the entire blank,

FYI I called Trondak and the recommendation was: "place a damp cloth over the spill for about 15 minutes, then scrape with something like a credit card." Lo and behold, it worked like a charm......I am now out of the dog house....at least temporarily!

As I build only fly rods, guide wear is a non issue, so I use guides that are either the lightest combination I can achieve (for light weight rods) or those most esthetically appealing where that is important to the customer or myself. Cost will be what it is after making my selections, it is almost the last thing I look at. I also chose guides that are well constructed and prepped. One of my lea

2622. I'm in trouble
Help, I'm in trouble at home! I dripped some Cork Seal on our hardwood kitchen floor and it was not discovered (by you know who) until it was dry. What can I use to remove it with damaging the flooring. Already tried water and Windex, no help.

2623. Re: Switch Rod Assembly
Just about right, exception is that you glue the shim into the rel seat before reaming it to fit the blank. If you are using tape instead of a shim your sequence is correct. Be sure you dry fit everything before mixing up the epoxy!!

2624. Re: Fly rod extension
I have successfully removed many fly rod reel seat using boiling water. If you are not attempting to save any part of the seat, immerse it completely in the water for at least 10 minutes, then try and pull it off, avoid twisting very much. It may take a couple of attempts to get it off. If you are attempting to save a wood insert in the seat, put the reel seat in plastic bag while immersing. As

I'll take good service over price any day, and good service doesn't come cheap! Think of all the items our vendors need to stock, with many of them turning over slowly. They need to get a return on their investments to stay in business. If you are a price shopper seek and find the supplier that meets those needs, but I wouldn't expect a broad inventory or special services.
IMO nobodies getting

Jack, you need to be more specific with your question There is no "formula" much is personal choice. If building a specfic rod, questions about it would be easier to respond to.

First of all making it a 2 pc will not give you any better handling. Modern multi piece fly rods perform every bit as well as 1 or 2 piece! Additionally Loomis is also out as they no longer sell blanks.
I build only fly rods and much prefer the Batson line. Having said that your choice of a NFC blank would be a good one, they are a very fine performing fast action blank. The Batson comparable

If you use wax, I hope you only fish where it is cool! Better yet, there are fillers used for filling voids. One of the most popular is Elmer's wood putty, color Golden Oak. Before attempting filling you will need to clean the grips up to remove embedded oil and grime. A good scrub with soap and a soft bristled brush will work.

2632. Re: struble U7 hood OD
I doubt that that is the hood diameter, as the seat inside diameter is .584 which only leaves a difference of .166. In my estimation there would have to be a bigger difference then that. Strubles web site is down, so you should give them a call to get the spec.

"A better wet/dry grip" is not the only reason we build CUSTOM rods! The use of exotic woods has gained great favor with the fly rod crowd, just as many believe bamboo looks better than carbon fiber. Many of my customers want fly rods with a "organic look" that combines beautiful grained woods with complementary colored guide wraps. Many customers are more then willing to ba

Perma Gloss will be shiny if you apply enough coats. It will not cover the threads the same as epoxy unless you use many coats. It does not take any time to level as it is quite thin and cures quickly. If you like the sparse coverage look, go with the PG, it will also be a lighter build.

I build only fly rods and use single foot exclusively regardless of the rod weight. Only when a client insists or I am building a traditional look bamboo rod do I use snake or double foot. There is a very definite trend away from snake guides on fly rods primarily due to the weight savings. The less work angle applies primarily to the builder, with the client getting some benefit if the less work

Don't know what style of seat you are talking about, but I have had 100% success putting the reel seat in a ziplock bag and the submersing it in boiling water for 10 minutes and the pulling the seat off. Sometimes have to repeat the process, but has always worked. Be careful with twisting to avoid harming the blank.

I find that the RX7 has a faster action and more power then the RX6, I believe the 7 is a higher modulus graphite, thus the cost difference. Personally I like the RX6 in light weight fly rods and the RX7 or RX8 in the heavier weights.
