I believe the solution is not another type seat, but keeping the seat clean. A good wash after use, including moving the reel seat parts.

First of all, I totally disagree with Mr. Schreckenbach's statement that single foot wire guides are "trash!" I have built 100's of fly rods for very experienced fly fishermen and guides, and almost without exception for those weights 7 and below I use single foot wire guides! They perform very well for casting and playing fish.
To the thread subject of sensitivity, it is almost a

It is not a function issue at all, it is the convivence in handling especially when traveling. I also find easier to build 4 pc as one is dealing with short sections, making guide line-up easier as well as not needing long table and supports.

The sale of two piece fly rods are diminishing and have been for years. I build only fly rods and have not built a two piece in 10 or 15 years.

You cannot go wrong with the NFC blanks! The "classic" seems to me to be one that fits your needs.

There seems to be some confusion here! He stated that he used a NFC carbon grip, not rubberized cork, it was used only for the fighting butt.

I find Gen 4 yellows far less than many other brands and as mentioned bubbles clear easily.. Pot life is long enough for me to complete a 4pc fly rod.

There is not a lot that is dangerous with rod building. You mentioned epoxy and yes it can be hazardous to many. Exposure to the skin should be avoided., Also obviously power tools should be handled properly,
If you plan on getting into the use of a lathe, it is a whole other game as far as safety.

It is pretty thin, so if it will be in contact with anything, it may be a wear problem.

Being a fly fisherman only, my proffered fish are trout and Steelhead.
For trout my go-to rod is a CTS 9' 5wt, for steelhead, an old Sage RPLXI 9' 6" 8wt

Much of it depends upon the types of rods you will be building. Some take longer wraps than others. For instance, I only build fly rods which have wrap that are very close to the size of the guide foot. A power wrapper would take as much time to set up as it does for me to hand wrap a guide. This is especially true if one is doing guides with locking wraps. I have built many hundreds of them and

One additional item may be the amount of epoxy use to adhere the grip and reel seat. If they were large gaps to be filled it may have taken a large amount of epoxy.

First of all, are you sure the comparative rods ae with fighting butts? Secondly, have you checked the scale?

170. Re: Spey
For Spey, the action is unique so that it loads properly during the casting stroke. Taper is a major factor as we// as the length in it's action. While switch rods were initially quite popular in the early spey growth, they have fallen some, especially for large rivers.

4 seconds could very well been too long, if the heat was high !\\, like from a flame ! A flame near a blank or rod is a prescription for disaster !! If for some reason you feel you must heat it, use a hair dryer or low heat heat gun.

The resin will crystalize when cool. warming will make it fluid again without harm.

What I do to make a epoxy winding check or ramp, is to use Rod Bond paste epoxy. Add the coloring agent as you mix the epoxy, then apply to the rod. Using the paste allows you to shape it without "running" concerns you will have with thread epoxy. Shaping with a alcohol wet finger works well..

Sounds like way too much epoxy! Created a thick plastic like lumps that are more prone to cracking.

All of us on this site, need to keep in mind, that we are not the market for our rods, our customers are! Many if not most could care less about rod nomenclature. If a species specific blank fits the bill for them, so be it!

Fighting butt if you think the fish require you using it, you can have one removable. I like the Batson HERA seats.

He must be living in the dark ages if he cannot see the improvements in rods and blanks, most can and do not need data to observe it! His posts pretty generally are without merit and usually voice his distain for marketing and advertising, so much so that many of us are fed up with his diatribes!

Ewaniki, is again dead wrong !! Rods and blanks have improved vastly over the years. Just a few of the improvements have been: weight, strength and action choices. This is markedly so in fly rods!
