Ceramic runners MUCH too heavy for any fly rod - especially that Winston. I know - this is an old, but persistent, argument for me. You will severely affect the performance of that rod. Use s/f runners if you wish - but make then REC Recoils size 2 or 3.

1504. Re: Moving glued guides
I have no idea why anyone would wish to use that stuff. What really stabilizes a guide - no matter how well it sits on blank - is thread finish migrating under the foot. with the glue there it cannot do this. I use elastic thread from craft stores to hold my guides in place while wrapping.

1505. Re: broken carbon rod
You realistically cannot expect to repair something like that. A manufacturer (Ross Rods in upstate NY) tried to sleeve it to no avail. To do a proper job the sleavs would have to be baked - and that would ruin the blank anyway.
My advise - trash it. Use it for parts. certainly don't give it to a customer. An internal splint will make it stronger - but the action will be ruined.

Hey Scott,
Yes - delivery has been tough Dec - Feb.
But, as always, their blanks are worth the wait. But now it should be better.
Believe me, I wish there were other blanks that were comparable so I, and my customers, would not have to experience the inconvenience - sadly there are none.

1508. CTS Blank Delivery Time
Good day all,
Delivery time for CTS blanks has been horrid. But they tell me that is all behind them now since the December - February rush is over. Also, illness and the resulting down time did not help either. Apologies to those it affected.
We should be back to more normal - 6-8 week delivery for balance of year.

Herb

1510. Re: Spine/Spline finding
Josh,
I spine all my fly rods.
here is how I do it.
1. Spine the tip section (S4) by flexing and the spine is located when tot section jumps. Mark it with a grease pencil.
2. Spine the next section (S3). Mark it.
3. Assemble S4 and S3. Spine it again and adjust the spine mark on both if it changes.
4. Spine S2. Mark
5. Try to spine butt (S1). Mark if successful.
6 Assemble S1 and S2

You do not want to mess with anything that would change the concentricity of the reel seat arbor - so the repair should be inside like Tom said.
As a matter of fact - I would do the repair after the arbor and even the seat were installed so as not to deform the blank if you push the plug in too much.

I renewed my sponsorship to RB.org because it is, in my opinion, the foremost site for accurate rod building information. The depth of knowledge here is unparalleled and the members are ready to share.
Thank you Tom.

1518. Re: recoil tip tops
Jim,
I have been using Recoil Tip-Tops for years on fly rods. No issues of grooving but not the best testing ground to determine this. The recoils are a nickel/titanium alloy so I think you are safe
If concerned - I would try the new Snakebrand chromed tip-tops. They definitely will not groove and are actually lighter than the recoils.

J,
Any of those can be bumped-up in power if you wish. But I think, from experience, those numbers are conservative.

If you can't find a Musky blank below - you can alter one to your liking. And they will do one, or any number of blanks if you wish.
This is from the CTS website. Not U.S. - but at least not the Orient.

1523. Re: Heating Finish
I never use heat of any kind any longer - haven't for years. Used to use a soldering iron held over or under wraps.
If the finish is wrong I use a dry brush and wipe it off. If the finish is too cured to do that I wet a brush with alcohol - wipe it all off and re-do.

Theory is that extra size guides will pass knots and snarles. Personally I would rather deal with the knots at the stripper or closer.
Other theory is that too large guides allow line to "clatter" around and not engender smooth line flow.
Again - personally - in normal weather conditions I would rather have the smaller guide as long as it doesn't constrict line and leader to fly

1525. Re: Does the weight saved by using permagloss on guide windings really affect how the rod feels?
Eric,
Very good point, I forgot to mention it. I try to use "00" thread on my running guides - especially in the tip area. But "00" no longer available except in silk. But I would go to "A" for any wrap over "D". BTW - you are not compromising strength. More wraps of a thinner thread is just as strong .

1526. Re: Does the weight saved by using permagloss on guide windings really affect how the rod feels?
Tony,
Like Tom says re amount of epoxy applied.
My opinion more weight can be saved by proper guide choice.
I only build fly rods and I am very sensitive to weight - especially in the tip area. I have used PG on many rods in the past . But no longer. I ended up refinishing with thread epoxy for various reasons.

1529. Re: Fastist Fly Blank
Bill,
I am now having CTS blanks built with a stiffer tip - to lift line off the water - and a moderate butt. It's not enough to state "fast". These blanks get very specialized now so more conversation is really in order. Got to know how the rod is going to be used and the owners expectation of how rod will perform.
That configuration is now my go-to rod in a #10 for the Cape Cod

1530. Re: Fly rod help
Crappie are a blast to catch on the fly rod. I did it when I was blown out of a Muskie trip in WI.
The guide had me use his 9', #6 sage TCR which is a moderately fast rod by todays standards. We used small poppers.
From the CTS menu - if money is not an issue - I would go with a 9'0", #5 Affinity-X or a 9'0" Affinity-MX.
for guides - hands down the REC recoils in single foot
