Jason, WHAT HAPPENED??? I was all ready to say that I have mentored many new fly rod builders - to walk you through the important phases of flyrod building. Also, If your son is geting serious about fly fishing - dont hinder him wit an inferior rod. As far as starting with an inferior blank - and any blank from the 80's will most likely be that - best to start with a good blank - if you s

Just saw this. Thank you Mike B. Just to add to this: If one wants am 11'0" EN blank there is the CTS Affinity-X #2 and #3 that has been very frequently for ENing. In addition - if one wants athe 11'0" with a softer tip - we also havs the Affinity-X 11'0" #3with a depowered tip by (-1). So, it's a #3 with a #2 tip. Herb CTS

Somehow a Goggle algorithm led me to @#$%& to buy a 2004 Fly Rod and Reel Magazine. Inside were two interesting articles #1 was about rods that do not track straight while casting - guess what causes that - correct - their opinion was that not spining a blank is one reason a rod does not track. #2 was a featured article mostly about "ACTION". Eight fly rod desogners contributed

Bob, It's easier to get straight edges with the hi speed FC motor because it is easier to keep a steady hand for the time it takes the 200 RPM motor to do its job. I like FC because support is just a phone call away - I.e. John Cates. Herb CTS

Ryan IMO - grinding feet of any coated (chromed) guide will eliminate the anticorrosion properties of the coating. That being said - the coating will not protect from staining for its lifetime if used in saltwater and not cleaned properly. The issue I had with grinding Fuji feet is that the heat generated will cause the weld to fail. I only prep by hand using an EZE Lap diamond "file&quo

Hey Rick. Is this a rod built on a CTS blank?? I can help you get a replacement S1 section if you want. The way to remove a stub male ferrule is to epoxy something thin and strong like a finishing nail - not a toothpic - into the butt end of the male ferrule and pull it out after the epoxy cures. You may have to carefully drill into the plug of the male ferrule. Do not drive a screw into th

Chris, I had occasion to fish that 8wt last week. owner had lined it with a #9 RIO OutBound Float, Hover, Intermediate. Was definiately overlined. Blank loaded way too far into the blank. I would look at the Scientific Angler (SA) Bonefish #8 - maybe the #9. Go to a good fly shop - they usually have samples to test cast. IMO - the NFC blanks are soft. Not sure how stiff/soft that rod is.

Ryan If you don't have one - get a good (MMM) respirator with filters rated for VAPOR - not DUST. Also - I would do the job out of doors. That stuff will fry your brain cell - and others in the house. Herb

With a lathe like FlexCoat's Cork Lathe - just measure fom work bench to center of blank . I assume you are not using a lathe with head and tail stock with the blank as a mandrel. Herb

Norm, You are correct - I was incorrect - senior moment. 3.75 mm is less than a 2/0.guide. Should be at least a #2 wire guide - 5.8 mm. Herb

"My question really is that the last 4 guides at the top seem pretty small at 3.75mm compared to the ID of wire guides and was wondering what others think about this?" Bruce, That will be fine - although I would prefer a little larger. But the big issue in my mind is that, it seems from your wording, that you are using ceramic-ring guides all the way. I personally am not a fan of c

Harry, I buy "O" rings of various diameters (allowing for distortion under load) to mimic guide height. Also remember that you can put more "O" rings on the blank than you will need. This gives you the option of visuallizing various spacings. If you will use less rings (guides) just "sister" two rings at the same spot. i.e. two rings will act as one guide. I do
