181. Slick Butt Types
I just got off a boat that had some White Marlin custom rods on it. The rods had slick butts on them, but were not like the AMTAK or Batson style with the trim riings. They weren't the Stuart Slick Butts either and were definitely not Aluminum. The rods were made by T. Greene from Lighthouse Point, FL.
These were black, had a hard feel to them, but where the top of the butt meets the reel seat

The rod has the wooden butt with mushroom cap, 2 piece chrome reel seat, 3 XBG style guides and tip top.

Thanks Tom. Any idea what the "G" would stand for?
I've searched on the web for some more info and cam back with codings of "T" and "B" and mine is a "G"?
Curiosity can be time consuming!

My lil bro gave me a fishing rod in need of a touch up. Here is what I can tell you about it.
The blank is green, and on the label (very faded) i can make out this information
Medium Action
?690 G (can't see the first #)
The blank has 3 guides on it with 2 white painted trim bands on each side of the guide wrap.
The butt is wooden and the chrome reel seat is 2 pieces allowing butt t

An 8wt or 9wt in a minimum of 9ft length. Fished up there for many many years and have recently stopped fishing for the salmon and focused on the steelies and browns and prefer 10ft or longer.
You may want to ask him "What type of fly fishing?", indicator/nymphing, swinging streamers, chuck-n-duck are all common forms of fishing up there. This may help steer you toward the proper le

Can anyone tell me what color green thread GARCIA used on their rods? See the photo sections for pics of what I am talking about.
Thanks in advance.

If you turn the thread carriage upside down, you will be able to "unscrew" a set screw that holds the threaded rod in place. then do exactly what Roger says.
I ground a new indent in my new rod so the set screw will have something else to "set" into.

I used a Calstar GF700M (7ft) rated between 20-50lb. and trimmed it to 6'6. Added some Fuji CHBNG guides and a slick butt and have no complaints.
The GF600M is the 6ft version.
I'm sure others will chime in.

193. GUIDE HEIGHTS
Does anyone have a chart or list of guide heights for Fuiji guides? I've scoured the web and can't seem to find one. I'm particulary interested in the spinning guide heights such as the YOG's or or BYLG's. Trying to figure out which guides I will need when seting up the NGC system.
Looks like a rough estimate would be that I need a guide about 55mm tall.
I think I will measure and record

Here's what I've got:
1/2" ID EVA Straight
1/2" Steel Mandrel smooth (non threaded)
Grizlzy Hobby Lathe with variable speed 1/2" Drill
I need to shape the straight EVA to a tapered foregrip. Do I use a small amount of epoxy to hold the EVA on the mandrel? This is the part I can't figure out. What keeps the EVA from spinning on the mandrel?

There is an article in the latest editon of Sport Fishing Mag. about the various types of guides available to the fishing industry and talks about the different ring materials.
Pretty interesting.

196. Another NGC Question
I've got RM Volume 10 #4 in front of me. I've been to the library. I've done the search (all dates) and am still puzzled.
7ft spinning rod - lite saltwater
total length from spool face to tip = 173cm
spool Diameter is 51mm x 27 = 1377 mm or 137.7cm (3000 series reel)
This puts the choker guide almost at the tip with ZERO room for running guides?
7 foot rod typically has 7 or 8 guides plu

Does anyone know the height of these guides? I've looked on the website and can't seem to find the measurements. I know Batson has the measurments with theirs, but just trying to compare.
Thanks

198. Forhan Locking Wrap
I've read and reread the tutorial in the Library section on the website. The one question I still have is this:
When doing the locking wraps, has the thread been removed from the thread carriage OR is the thread being wrapped with a fly tying bobbin?
I can't figure out how to keep tension on the thread while keeping the thread on the thread carriage on a PACBAY type wrapping machine(no spri

200. Harnell Blanks
Greetings
I just posted 2 pictures of Harnell Blanks that I am trying to get information on. I am trying to get the original thread colors and the original guide styles that would've been put on these rods when they were new.
Does anyone know any history on Harnell?
Thanks in advance.

How do the smaller guides resist icing when fishing in the cold? this always seems to be an issue when steelheading with a float rod in freezing weather. It may be too early in the season to tell!!

Thanks Tom. The term "nub" was all I could muster up after some Saturday evening refreshments. I've been told these guides were made by Allen Manufacturing, a now defunct company.
I'll scrounge around to see what I can find to keep it original.

I picked up this old wooden handle rod for pennies. Looked pretty cool. Who can tell me anything about it. Does anyone know where to find replacement guides like these?
Also, look closely at the tip. It looks as if something is broken off the tip, but not quite sure what it could be.
Thanks for all your help.

Just wondering if anyone knows or knew what kind of blanks were being sold out of the trashcans? I picked one up for $5 and all I can tell is this:
1. It is 7ft 5"long
2. It is matte gray finish
3. Has a tip size of 4.5
4. Butt size = .539
5. is med fast to fast action
Just looking for any info. I do understand it may be a long shot.
Thanks

209. Underwrap Coats
I've got all my underwraps done (A Thread BLACK)for a saltwater build. A few questions:
Do I apply a coat of highbuild FC or FC Lite on the underwraps. (only kind i've got)
And if and when I do do this:
Do I need to scuff the underwrap epoxy when applying guide wraps? and if so with what?
How long is too long to wait between underwrap coat and guide wrap coat?
thanks
