Primarily smallmouth fishing in Massachusetts (Quabbin Reservoir-eastern Massachusett's water supply) although it's 90 miles from Boston and lakes in Southern Maine where I run a fishing trip each year for about 14 anglers. Those days in Maine are 100+ fish days for two anglers. One of our Maine group fished at Quabbin two years ago and caught and released a 7lb 1oz smallmouth, only the fourth

I have used older bottles on repaired rods, while it may take a little longer to dry and it does darken the cork a little more, it still worked for me. I mostly use it on old rods I have fixed up that get donated to a State of Connecticut program for new fishermen, mostly children.

Forget anything about the spine, it doesn't come into play. Try the simple spiral, turn the second guide on the butt section 180 degrees and add a guide, #8, 1/2 way between the butt guide and the newly turned 2nd guide on the butt section at 90 degrees from the butt guide. Orient the top half so the guides are on the bottom and your done. You don't need any transitions guides, the guide after t

Small knitting needles make good burnishing tools, handle gluing epoxy can be mixed on a folded square of aluminum foil using popsicle sticks as the mixing tool. I mix my thread epoxy in a shot glass, use it straight from the glass for short duration jobs or pour it onto, again, a square of aluminum foil. I would also invest in a box of cheap latex gloves for working with denatured alcohol as i

I used 4-5 coats of Tru-oil on cork handles and they only need to be touched up after five years of fishing, no pit filler loss, just a slight sanding and re-coat once or twice.

My last few personal builds have been on that seat, I like them, feel more connected to the rod. One of the newer rod companies is using that seat with carbon fiber wrapped grips on all its casting rod models.

Charcoal grey, like a suit, any color combination will go with it. Green, like the AMTAK Matrix blanks choice #2.

Look up model car distributors, most hobby shops have them.

Also known as the football finish. Wasn't there a leading company that deliberately finished their wraps that way?

Be careful when you grab the rod! IMHO, place it in an area where your hand would not normally contact the rod.

Finger an "sand" with 0000 steel wool, prefer 4-5 coats for high gloss look.

Never "think" cheap, think blanks and components at lower cost, only free is cheap. Besides, the same amount of effort will go into the build regardless of the cost of the components. Your first foray into rod building will seem "expensive" because you have never laid out any money before. Follow Russell's philosophy and you will have an expensive rod from relatively inexp

Paul, only you can determine whether a blank is reasonably priced for your budget. Some rod builders believe St Croix blanks are reasonably priced. My suggestion would be to do your own research by looking at the web sites of the major blank suppliers and search for the blank that YOU might find reasonable. You would also be surprised at what else you may discover that will enhance your fishin

Until I got the new ALPS chuck I just used an appropriate sized hose clamp over the chuck grips and never had an issue, a $3.00 solution.

Randolph, your email is hidden, email me with your snail mail address and I can send you a sample. This thread is more to the black side than other spools of blk/yel I have.
Thanks.

143. Thread Needed
I posted this request on the Buy/Sell page and had one contact that didn’t work out so I hoping the main board might bring better results.
I’m more than half way through a restoration of a Congress brand fly rod from the ’20s and ran out of thread, thought I had enough when I started. It is Gudebrod size A nylon classic twist in the Yellow/Black combo. I have a spool of Black/Yellow but

My fishing buddy, now known as the Connecticut Picker, scored two of these sets for me for $20.00 a piece. Future retirement projects, wall hangers or display items for some fisherman's man cave.

If you have a favorable reputation as a custom rod builder, most customers will be proud to show they own one of your rods, I've never had a refusal. Part of my offering with a rod build is any name they want on it as mentioned previously.

Give it a shot, cork color can vary, Golden Oak seems to be a very close match for most cork or a least blends in very well.
