I’m new to this but recently I glued up the grip section of AT g2 system components for a casting rod I’m building. There are numerous opportunities and locations to apply epoxy. As a testament to my being new to rodbuilding I took full advantage and very carefully packed virtually every available cavity with epoxy with never a thought to how much the epoxy would add in weight. Once dry I pick

When I was researching power wrappers I literally could not get enough of forum conversations revolving around them. I ended up going with flex coat’s DC 777. Takes only seconds to reposition rod supports, is a very clean design, the slip clutch is very handy, the foot control quickly becomes second nature and the machine is reversible. It’s wonderful to finish on as well with the finishing su

Is Facebook the only way to enter this? I've seen some of the skills of some of the entries and they are formidable to be sure but I am curious...

Thanks to all for all the kind words. Robert F.....thanks, it does not feel like magic. It feels like I'm lucky to pull off every single transition! I've taken so many pictures and zoomed in to count wraps because I lose track. Mark, you should! I'm happy to be able to do what I do and know that comparison is thief of joy but when I see what people do with thread in the manner of weaves

Little off topic but not too far off. Bit of wrapping porn I suppose? Since I started wrapping, cylinders have a different aspect. I have a titanium pen that will use virtually any pen insert (uni ball jetstream is a favorite) that i always look at and thing about wrapping. I've even eyeballed my favorite screwdriver shanks haha. But i did exercise this borderline compulsion recently by buildi

I’m from Canada. We are metric. I measure in feet / inches. It’s just what I’ve become accustomed to and relates to how I process information. 3 1/2 feet makes sense in my brain more then the metric equivalent. But I do use both in truth. But a tape measure with both standard and metric is an exercise in frustration to me because the edge I’m trying to measure often falls on the metric side of

Ugh.....dryer....I meant dryer haha. I have my hands full wrapping one rod at a time thanks! Thanks for the examples. I've read and looked about a bit re what to do about dryers. Last year I couldn't see the point of having more than one dryer and this year it's apparent I need more than one dryer. It's all about time vs money vs ability and these days there is little time so I'll be buying wh

John / Roger I guess, for me, it's just that the rod gives instantly reversible tension so it's a no brainer that you can back up and not have to manage the tension with your off hand. When I hand wrap I can correct an overwrap instantly. Same when I put the pull through in the wrong direction and have to back up (this happens more often than it should). I feel like an inadvertent roll back pu

Fair enough John haha. It really is a pleasure to use. The slow speed performance is amazing n using the foot control at slow speeds quickly became second nature. I love the aesthetic almost as much as how well it performs. Hopefully I haven't offended in any way adding the tension rod. Next on my wish list is your 4 rod dryer. I've left room above everything on the wall for it and am hoping t

Mark, thanks. The key to building the space was to buy a power wrapper (love that wrapper) that is much too big and bulky to be happy anywhere but a dedicated space. Two thirds of the space that we renovated is my wifes glass fusing studio and the remainder is for my fishy bizness. Tyler, a kegorator won't fit. I can only put it under the bench and that does not allow for the tap unless i put

I recently built a dedicated rod building station recently and spent quite a bit of time on the net looking for images. I feel like this could be a good thread! I went with a white top, lots of light and a pretty high bench that i can either sit or stand at. I like the white top as it is really easy to see bits and pieces and doubles as a good backdrop for photos, which I like as I like to chr

Yeah, epoxy has for sure been the most persnickity aspect of it all. If I had tried to get into some of the more elaborate base wraps I'm sure that would take the persnickity crown but aside from olive branches n saw blades and fades I haven't explored fancy wraps too much. I've overworked epoxy, burnt it, spittled blowing on it thru a straw, had a fly land in a 3/4 set mix, fiddled with fish eye

Thanks Mark, I'm new to all this but it's pretty clear it's all about the details for sure. As to being critical about my own work....i guess if i need my ego stroked I could show my work to someone who doesn't build to oohh and ahh (and i do this) but if I want to learn I need to show it to people who build do if that makes sense. I actually built an NFC Iconoglass 5 wt with a carbon fiber ha

Thanks for all that Herb, So many unknowns in all of this that I'm basically winging it to a degree. Reducing the ferrule wraps as they went up the rod was on my mind but also wasn't really sure how much structural integrity the wrap offers and what is overkill and what isn't. The long ferrule wrap into the stripper does look odd in a subtle (to me) way and was thinking that tipping the uphil

Thanks Michael! I'm afraid to cast it to be honest. I'm new to fly fishing / casting and it feels like I've built a ferrari when I can barely drive my honda stick. Super worried I'm going to fly strike the blank.

I've posted a couple times before but never have made an intro. Recently realizing it's ok to post pics here I thought I'd throw a few out there of a switch rod I have just finished. My Name is Bob and I'm from the Yukon Territory Canada. This rod is my 11th and if I had to pick what I have the most trouble with it would be the epoxy. Seems it's a fight every time but I'm slowly getting more c

Makes sense to me that the writing be easily read according to whether it’s being held in the left hand or the right. Unless the real seat has any writing or logos, then I will orient decals to match the hardware branding / lettering.

I used the tension rod from my crb hand wrapper. I drilled a small hole at an angle towards the rear of the carriage. When the rod is bent over i comes down in line with the two "goal posts". I added two eyelets in front of the goal posts. The thread comes around the post, thru the first eyelet, up to the tension rod and down to the second eyelet. I put a few pics on photobucket as I

Hello all, First post for me here. New to the rod building world with about 9 builds to date, 6 of which were on a crb handwrapper kit from MH. The latest three are on the dc777 flexcoat wrapper. My purchase of this unit was a bit of a stretch to be honest but once i got it in my head i wanted a power wrapper there was no turning back. It took me quite awhile to finally decide on this wrapp
