I have been setting the rpm to a little slower than when the epoxy starts to threaten to sling off the rod when first applied. I normally use a spatula and have found that if I have the spatula too perpendicular to the rotation of the rod it will froth up the epoxy....it's almost like a cavitation effect kinda sorta. You can watch it happen. Nice clean epoxy until the angle reaches a point where

Got home from work a little early and did some sanding on the grips. I've got a selection of sanding strips. Decided to use 80 grit to rough off the excess epoxy. I have four coats on them as my plan was to sand the surface down until smooth and then permagloss. It kinda looks like what I should have been shooting for is only enough epoxy to fill the weave in the fiber and thus would have a flat

That is a Yukon river but not "the" Yukon river. It is the Kathleen River which is quite short (worth a google) from lake to headwaters but it is quite unique in that you stand a chance of catching rainbows, grayling, lake trout and kokanee all in the same water. Catching all four in one outing gives you bragging rights to a Kathleen Grand Slam. I myself have not achieved this local sta

Well I for sure have some work ahead....I'm four layers deep in intentionally accidental drip and flip glory. I'm going to try though. I tried before on my 5wt and got into a weird cycle of alternating layers of PM and epoxy as the PM showed every defect and then I'd hit it with epoxy. Probably a combined count of 6 layers and left it with an epoxy topcoat because defeat... I'm going to try an

Thanks El, I like the color shifting metallic. I am using the colors in the first pic I shared as they semi closely go with the colors in the reel seat. What I didn't include in the pic is the metallic I will be using for the trim bands / inlays. I think It might be similar? The hardware is silver on this build so some silver metallic trim bands will be in play but in the aurora theme e

The video was entertaining and instructive. From what I saw there what I am doing is at least on par with what the gentleman in the vid is putting out but I would love to see the epoxy flatter. I would go crazy with that many bubbles in the epoxy but as the fellow says, he does what works for him. I've been at this for a couple years now and this is rod #16....still finding what works for me I gu

When I was into bike building and metal fabrication I spent so much time cruising forums and blogs of various builders and fabricators and I always fell hardest down the rabbit hole for chronicles of builds. To watch the build progress and read the conversations that happened along the way was amazing. To watch someone's vision unfold over time was a great experience and basically represented fue

Mark, Daryl...thanks for the kind words and my son will be jovially smug you agree with him haha. Les, thanks as well. I'm glad that you have trouble with epoxy as well haha. It is my single most stressful part of rod building. I think my favorite stage of building is right after finishing all the wrapping. It's like "this is as clean as this thing will ever be"...and then roll the d

I've been obsessing over a couple of projects and the current step includes trying to get the epoxy on this switch rod to lay flat over the base wrap. I've been to a point where I was calling it a done deal but knowing the base wrap, when viewed in certain lighting, had waves in the epoxy, well, it bothered me.. I had posted this pic the other day but it will serve here as my example of wha

This is kinda sad, El makes many good points and is being treated semi dismissively... You won't change / expand your demographics if you never try to expand / change your demographics. I spend quite a bit of time on instagram and am amazed how many builders there are on there. At least some of them are on the less than geriatric side of life. It seems everyday there are new to me accounts

I've tried to register a number of times for the photo gallery without success. Not sure why but eventually just gave up. I have good success hosting my pics on photobucket and then linking to them from my posts here. I used to be involved in a number of motorcycle forums and pics within threads were always a normal thing and there were many threads dedicated to various "builds", com

I'm kind of new but I've found that the metallic thread just needs to be handled carefully. The thread is made by wrapping a strip of foil around the thread and if handled too aggressively or running it through your fingers will cause the foil to creep along the thread creating gaps in the foil and exposing the thread underneath. I try to just not run it through my fingers for applications where

Love my DC777 Flex Coat Most of the good things about it have been covered but one thing I have come to appreciate is the aesthetic of the unit. It’s kinda of hard to describe but for me the flex coat unit leans toward “studio” and more lathe like wrappers leans towards “workshop”. Not sure if that makes sense. It’s just lovely and equally lovely to use I reinforced the fence and made it a
