62. Re: motive
From what I have seen they are awesome and any builder would benefit from owning one. However, I will probably not make more that a few rods per year. Employing a power wrapper would significantly increase the cost per rod for a long time. Yet, I am sure I will end up buying one. I like tools! I just started building a month ago and I am hooked. I am on my 4th build and one rebuild. I just

63. Re: Telescopic
I had the same question about the cost of blanks. I have not compared prices of blanks to completed rods made from those same blanks by manufacturers. Looking at some sites where you know the type blanks that were used, the costs appear to be about 3x the blank cost. Does that seems about right to you sellers?

I am not sure about your rods lengths etc., but you may want to look at pool cue cases. They may be a little larger than what you're looking for, but I have many I have bought over he years from @#$%& and other cheap venues. A small single case will have two sections that would easily hold a rod in each section. Just a thought.

I have never used heavier than 14 pound test for kings. Light drag and lots of open water. No real need for heavier line.

I researched this recently and bought some on Amazon. What I bought was Spray Max 2K Clear Glamour. it may not be practical for your application as it is expensive $22 per can and once it is activated you have to use it all within 48 hours. I bought it to finish a couple of painted rods, but I haven't tried it yet as I am waiting until I have about 5 rods to cover.

Very cool! I hope you need to sharpen some tubing soon.

Thanks for the responses. I almost put in my question that a yes or no would suffice. :) This makes perfect sense. This also tells me that the guides are an extremely important, if not the most important component on the rod.

Update: I have taken all of your advice from practicing wraps on an old broken blank to replacing old guides and building a rod from scratch after stripping an old rod down to its blank. I am now completing my fist build from a new blank. It is a 6'6" med. light spinning rod, cork grip, and single wraps with a trim on the guides. I finished the epoxy of guides today. It really looks good.

I'm sorry if this response is not exactly appropriate for this thread, but being a newbie with a few months of education on building I thought it mattered where you put the guides in relation to the spine. Is this a myth or are you referring to how it will fish, not what's technically better. Or is it not technically better?

Roger hit it on the head. "Happiness is the quiet and beauty of a quiet trout water in the early morning as the sun is rising or the sun is setting after a great day in the out of doors." Any fishy setting under these circumstances is why I do what I do.

How many guides do you plan to put on that little thing? Seven inches is a short casting rod where I fish.

I plan to seal it with epoxy and it will be below the reel seat. Thanks for the confirmation.

I have always done woodwork of different kinds before deciding to build my own rods so I naturally look to wood when problem solving. I recently found that an old pool cue, which are usually a very hard maple, has many uses in rod building. I needed a winding check that would transition a roughly 1" handle to a 3/4" reel seat. I found the section of cue that met those measurements an

After reading all of your great and practical responses, I can see this was a good question that should help other newbies in the future. Your responses were informative and concise as usual. Thanks to all for taking the time to respond. I see I was on the right tract with my thinking. But also my main issue was answered in my mind. I deduce this is a component to consider for mostly ergonomi

I know there are no stupid questions here but...I am totally confused about reel seat sizing. I did a search all the way back and could not find anything to answer this question. Is there really a need for a specific size reel seat if you are building from a blank? What I see and read in questions and discussions seem to be about what size for a blank or handle. It seems to me that most of yo

When you say it like that 100' does seem a pretty long way to pitch, but in smaller rivers we pitch to both sides. Seem like about 30 meters or so.. It just seemed like the way to do it because we were mostly fishing from bass boat platforms. Casting overhead is a no no due to overhead trees in these rivers. It ain't necessarily quiet. You would be surprised how long you can pitch a 1/2 oz j

I previously thought I would put on an 11" cork full handle so put it loosely on the blank and simulated some pitching and flipping. ( I mostly pitch) I found the grip to be too long by several inches for pitching and just OK for flipping in cool weather. That length grip reaches my jacket sleeve and makes it really a pain for pitching. (now I remember why I got rid of my first one) I'm

That rod would probably not be practical for cranking, even big baits in my opinion (as a bass fisherman no builder). I would think it would be too stiff and would tend to pull the bait from the fish's mouth. For cranking, I have found that a composite/fiberglass blank is preferred (by me). Graphite in the butt end and glass towards the tip. This gives the fish some time to eat it before you

Hey Steve, sounds like we fish similarly. I can pitch very accurately from over 100 feet so I would rarely be casting with this rod. I know the length will help with the flipping game, and flipping in a river can be awesome and fun! I have to go to a seven footer for my spinnerbait rod as it get the fish out of the cover so much better. In a lake my technique, and therefore rod needs, are tot

Good advice Jeffery. You are a better fisherman than I. I fished several Red Man events and never placed in the money. Good job. I have thought about that and I would be fishing riverbanks with heavy structure mostly for bass. I think the extra length might be better for getting fish up and out quicker. I'm also thinking it will double as a near shore sheepshead rod and be perfect for that

I fished tournament trails many years ago. At that time, a 7' rod for bass was rare. I think I will love a 7'6' rod as I am fairly tall. I use an 8' rod for trout float fishing and it feels pretty normal to me now.

84. Flipping stick
Hey builders, I am planning to make a new flipping stick. I don't do a lot a of bass fishing anymore. I was just wondering what size rod most of you use for flipping/pitching for bass. My old rod is a 7' telescoping Bass Pro Extreme MH. I am thinking of going with a 7'6" MH Diamondback blank. What do you think about 7'6". Too long? I mostly pitch from about 35 ft. from the river

Yes, the dryer with a good tying jig w/ tensioner was definitely a game changer. So much easier. The wraps on the rebuild are not as tight as I would like. I can see some rod color under the wraps in places. My fault. In my haste to get started with the dryer, I forgot to burnish the wraps again. Overall, and considering what I knew a month ago, I am very pleased with the first rebuild. I now

86. Productive day
I had a great day in the shop today. Until today all of my practice consisted of replacing and wrapping line guides. I have one rod that I stripped all the way to the blank. A 7' med/mod fast casting rod I have had since the early 80s. Another was a 6.5 ft. med H/fast Bass Pro Pro Qualifier I bought in the 90s. This was the best and most $$$ rod I had bought at the time. It was still in pre

I have stripped an old rod with which to make my first build. I have been repairing some older rods with new wraps fo practice. I believe the addition of a dryer will be a game changer as I have watched plenty of videos which were easy to see the errors I was making. I am almost done with repairs for practice and will start my fist build in the next few days. You have all be very helpful.

Wow great response Mark. You answered all of my questions and then some. I was not even aware of the bands for securing the foot. I will try this for sure. Since I originally asked this question, I made myself a wrapping jig with tensioner and I was amazed at how much this helped. My wraps were was too loose. Just poorly done compared to my new wraps. I was also not tightening the final wra

Hey Lyle,
All very good advice already mentioned and I am also at your stage. To learn, I took an old flipping stick from the very early days when 7' was long. I always loved the rod and literally wore it out. Three eyes were missing rings and the finish was peeling off. The tip guide is gone. I have finished stripping it down to the blank and have painted it. I just received a cheap cork h

Hey Lyle and welcome to an amazing resource. I am about as new and have been learning for a few weeks. There are so many resources on this page to explore. Read all that applies to beginners in the section above labeled Library. There is some amazing information. I felt like I would look stupid asking questions that were covered in these resources. So I read all I could find before I started
