I am quite certain that in the grand scheme of things, there are literally millions of flies made throughout the world each year. My few flies might not hurt, but my few flies are not all that are being produced. I am sure there are many guides that would serve the purpose of this rod. It doesn't sound like you will be casting it much. I think that reel has a 20 pound drag. I would consider a light to medium duty boat rod guide. I have used them on a few saltwater rods and like them. Please feel free to criticize my response if I am off-base as I am a novice builder. Just fyi, I have a build that is a MH 14-20 lb. casting rod with Airwaves. I built is to use 30 lb braid, but didn't have any braid on hand. I spooled it with 15 lb. mono attached to a 20 lb fluorocarbon leader and caught 5 striped bass in the 6 lb. range and had no difficulties with knots going through the guides and it casted awesome. I later put on the braid on and it casted even better.

The Alberto knot looks very simple to tie and reliable. I will have to give it a try. ery few of my personal rods are micro guided, but eventually I am sure all will be.

Thanks for all of the knot advise. I typically use the FG knot, but this rod is for a friend. That is the knot he told me he uses so I am building to that. I think he would want the best casting guides for the build. I failed to mention he will be fishing a Stradic 3000 on the rod. I don't think this will change anything. My only question would be why not the MV25s? I am still quite a novic

I am building a redfish rod for a friend. Casting distance is one goal as his fishing requires long casts to spooky reds. He wants a medium action (8-12lbs) rod 7'3" in length. While I do not surf fish for those species, I do fish for 30+ pound redfish in the surf. With braid you should be good with the 6500. I use a 6500 and it is more than enough reel for large reds.

It's not a stupid question if you don't know the answer. I had to look it up a while back. They can ne very handy, but I rarely use them. I use the epoxy to fill in any small gas at the rod butt.

I am a newbie to building, but have already run into this problem. I have only bought about 10 blanks. I bought a 7'3" rated as fast-medium heavy. I bought a blank from another company 7' fast MH also. The first blank turned out to be what I would call Medium. It was going to be a salt-water float rod and it turned out to be an awesome popping cork rod. The other blank was much stiffer

It sounds like you are going to have an awesome outfit. Those spotted bass are tough as nails. I sometimes fish for them in western Ga. So far, I have only built 5 rods. All were built just as described by G. Loomis in Kent's previous post. His video was all I knew about the subject at the time I did my first couple of builds. After that video I just assumed this was gospel on the issue. I see no reason to build any differently since it is now part of my routine. I have not been building long. I am on my 5th rod in the past two months. I have used all three and as a fisherman and builder, I am partial to cork also. It is very durable, easy to repair, and very comfortable. It also just looks the best to me because I have fished it all of my life. I do like eva on my offshore bottom rods.

I recently bought some from a very common online seller. I bought 25mmX1m for less than $30. You may find it cheaper. I have used it with a cheap EVA cut up and used as arbors for a rod I am currently building. It looks like it will make a very comfortable handle, especially good for getting ut of a rod holder under stress.

How many of you actually finish a rod blank. By finish, I mean finishing the blank with some type of finish or epoxy. Is there ever a need for this other than after painting a blank?

It must be the mood. I had a long day wrapping a rod that did not want to cooperate. I had two guide wraps come loose during the epoxy. I forgot to adjust the eyes util I had glue on the guide wraps. My bad! A little patience goes a long way. Got it all correct and the rod looks good.
