121. Re: TFO Rod Blanks
I communicated with TFO several months ago about fly rod blank sales and they indicated they decided to exit that business. There are a few old Pro series of blanks out in the marketplace, but most of the other blank models that used to be available have sold through.

I grew up in Bronx, NY. It was "soda" from day one for me. Pop was something you did to the person who touched your soda. :-)

If you have the money and make enough rods to warrant the investment, buy a mixer. But I see it as more of a luxury than a necessity.
I have never had any issue mixing my epoxy in a plastic mixing cup, regardless of what top brand I use, and I would rather spend the money instead on rod components or to ensure I have sufficient basic tools such as a quality wrapping station, rod dryer, brushe

124. Re: Epoxy
At the very nominal cost of epoxy, I would stick to only the well know and well regarded brands articulated on this forum. When a rod building newbie, I would say my epoxy skills improved with each build, and I am sure this is true for most novices, then after about 8 or 12 rods you've got your mojo down.
Use a quality product, mix it well, let it sit a moment, pour into an aluminum cup or

I did not perform CCS but, to your point, the E2s reputation is to like an above normal line weight, which is why I tried a several year old Rio Avid Trout, which I think comes in at 1/2 to a full line size heavy. It's OK.. Now they have Avid Trout Gold and Grand, based on those tapers. I even asked Batson and they said go over standard with E2. I'm wrapping up an Epic 690G blank so it will

All things good with the rod are the result of the builder, it's bad points the result of the blank producer! I'll buy that!
If it casts like a dream then the curves may not have mattered at all. Personally I'd be a little disappointed in the QC depending on how much the blank cost.

I have no issues with Flex Coat or U40, but I used Gen4 on my last rod and liked it a lot.

On the 4 piece fly rods I build, I like to use the CRB micro guide bands on the tip section. I just roll a number of them up the blank and place two on each foot of the guide. This really works well on single foot guides. Of course you either have to put the top top on last or slide the bands up the blank before you affix the tip top. Make sure to grind your feet down to get a more gentle sl

I like to do three thin coats vs. putting it on thick and heavy in one or two coats. And I only make fly rods, so many of the wraps are small. I like it especially thin on the first coat to get good penetration and coverage. I even like to thin my mix a bit with a few drops of DNA or, yes it works well, IPA (not the beer, smart aleck!). I use a brush, but some are quite adept with a metal sp

Who has built a Batson Eternity2 9' 6wt, or even a 7wt or 5 wt.
I am looking for a great line match. Rio Tech Trout is good for dries, but not so great for other applications. I did not like SA MPX. An older SA Textured Trout is OK. Rio Avid Trout OK. Anyone have a line they love on Eternity2?

From where is your blank delayed?
Not too many 11-weights out there.
CTS mentioned above would be a good one. Bloke or another on @#$%&. Or just go up to a 12 or down to a 10 if you don't have either of those.

My thoughts:
Expensive blank with two curves, I would send it back or not buy from that maker again.
Spine or straightest axis? I would go with straightest axis unless you wish to delve into frequency analysis or flat line oscillation of the blank, for which there exist minimal current measuring devices. If you wish to look into blank frequency, email Michael Danek, a member of this forum

134. Re: Spline
I am not referring to blanks with tip top on them and without, as that does add weight and, even while minute in amount, it might be perceptible.
My point is that in a quality made blank, in a properly controlled test, I doubt whether you would "feel" a difference between a rod that is built on the straightest axis and one that is not. In controlled, randomized, blind tests with muc

"I never have any bias going in on the tests I do for the manufacturers. It is the results from those tests that create my position - not the other way around. Sometimes you suspect things but it

Despite all that effort, and with all due respect, I would sincerely doubt that in a well controlled, double-blind test you or anyone else could determine any difference in a random sample of the 200 blanks on which you ran CCF. The mind is inherently biased, and the placebo effect most profound. And "crispness" is a descriptor that has no verifiable or scientific basis in measurable

I think most mix in a mixing cup and then pour into unto tin foil or into a tin cup expressly made for the purpose of spreading out the epoxy and eliminating bubbles.

I make golf clubs as well as fly rods, strictly for fun and my own use. I have tested rods on a table top by flipping them to find the "spine." I have built a spine finder with tube and bearings. Spine finders are also used with golf shafts by some club makers.
The straightest axis approach can be determined by 1) looking down the blank; 2) rotating the blank between two points

I think the high RPM machines help a lot. I only have a fly drying motor and stand system which I also use to apply finish epoxy. You need to be a bit more careful due to the slower RPMs, so I tend to do more thin coats, usually 3.

Presuming you are using a rod dryer and not just rotating. I have only built six rods and still have a bit of difficulty on a long smooth section of the labeling area, especially if I have a hook keeper and put one wrap at the winding check, another at the tip-facing side of the hook keeper, then another wrap maybe 2.5 to 3 inches down the rod from that, between which I put the label or write t

I have only cast a Recon once. I was not that impressed. I have made NFC LMX FAF 9' 5wt and 9' 8wt rods. I find them to be good, fast action rods, worth the $125 price and especially worth it when on deal. My 5wt prefers a 1/2 size heavy WF line. I would rank them more in the fast and powerful end of the spectrum rather than calling them finesse rods. They throw very tight loops and you can

I think I would tell him to live with his old name on his fishing rod.
Other than that, I would make or buy a label with a sold background color, white, black or similar to the blank color, think of an Orvis blank, and place that label over the existing label area and one coat of epoxy over it and be done.

Looks OK to me. As discussed above, it's tough on a white blank, but I think you got the contrast you wanted. It will yellow a bit more, but then your blank will get a bit nicked up as well. No one will notice but you. The casual looker will think your black guides are magically attached to the blank.

As to your 7 wt, I just built a 9 ft 8 wt rod with Recoil snake guides. You can easily terminate with size 2 running guides instead of size 3. Size 2 is plenty large enough. I went 16, 12 in double foot stripper-like guides then to Recoil double foot snake one each of 5-4-3 and all the rest size 2. Normally I don't taper that much, but did so at a suggestion. You could go 16, 1

I am about to finish a 9 ft. 6 wt. Epic 690G blank, which is super light. I am using one 12 stripper and then Recoil single foot guides from there. Like you, 1's. I may use one size 4 Recoil to transition between the stripper and the 1's.
My question, on the 6wt did you use the light wire Recoils (RSF) or move up to the heavier wire version. (RSFX)?
Thanks.
