Some good thoughts have already been suggested, but I will add or reiterate some commentary:
1) If you fly fish most of the time, build a fly rod, it is no harder than any other rod.
2) What rivers or streams do you primarily fish and for what size trout?
3) How much do you want to spend on your entire build? By the way, you can build a very nice fly rod for less than $200. As to the blank

Yes, if you are going to go with a cane rod, you want cane from the Tonkin area of China. I have not heard of anyone building rods of bamboo grown in the U.S.
A cane rod could be made in the USA, and all parts sourced and made in the USA, except the high quality cane. The rod maker could get raw cane and split it and plane it in his or her U.S. shop, but the cane would not be U.S. grown.

I believe there are many factors that influence a rod's sensitivity, many related to the rod itself, but line is also a factor.
Rod composition (materials), weight, wall thickness and length can all be factors, as will the design of the rod's taper.
I fly fish, and the rod's I own that are most suited to sensitivity when nymph fishing happen to have softer tip sections. And the design of

I think it is wise for them to go to a gray color, as the cobalt was a non-starter for some rod makers or clients there of. I was OK with it on my 9' 6wt, but the only thread I went with was also cobalt.

I’d be curious on the take you have on the two you have
----------
My take on the two:
-- The NFC LMX 9' 5wt represents a terrific value in a blank at $125, and is worth it at the few times they price it at $250. I would not call it a finesse rod. it is a modern, faster action r

For anyone who builds a fly rod with these new offerings, I would love to get their opinion.
I have built and fished an Eternity 2 9' 6wt and a NFC LMX 9' 5wt., and I am curious about the level of incremental improvement to performance the respective new graphite/resin combos will deliver.

I would think most would agree with your assessment: the LMX being the fast and more powerful rod, which is not to everyone's liking. Some folks like softer, or deeper flexing rods, hence the glass renaissance. Don't overlook the NFC "classic" fly rods, as they may be more to your liking.
I see NFC has their new fly rods out!

I hate stripping down a rod to make corrections or fix errors. But sometimes you just have to. Reel seats and grips types and size are very much a personal preference thing. I make fly rods, but when I go to fly fishing shows or a shop or even Cabela's, I take time to look at, feel and size up the different components OEMs use in their various models. That helps me get my component decisions

I think that the LMX blanks are sold at the $125 price point most of the times I visit the NFC website. Not too many folks are buying them at $250. Rod Geeks Carbon 4 fly blanks are a bit over $100 and are basically identical to St. Croix Imperial fly rods, which are quite decent rods. In my mind, at $125, an NFC LMX produces a very good fly rod. But it is not as good as an Epic G fly rod, th

Jon: I am presuming you meant to say Epic and not Echo. Echo does not sell blanks, but are finished rods known for their high price to performance ratio.
An NFC LMX fly blank is $125. In the past, on periodic sales it can be had for less than $100. I got several last year for $75 each on their big sale. If $125 is too much for you, then as Michael indicated, keep an eye out for sales.

There are a lot of excellent 9' 5wt blanks out there. I recently built an NFC LMX 9' 5wt and paired with a Airflo Universal Taper WF line it is an excellent rod. In my opinion, perhaps the best fly blank for the money, especially when on sale. Lots of power but will also easily cast a size 18 fly with precision. But I would not call its tip soft or call it a finesse rod. I have not cast any

As Tim Scott suggests, I have also built with non-tapered running guides after stripper (and on higher weight fly rods one additional stripper-like guide). and it work just fine.

Forhan locking wrap may help on a single foot guide. You may also want to consider a double foot guide on your first guide.
How old is you epoxy? Did you prep/grind the foot to ensure a smooth thread transition up the foot? You may want to try multiple coats of a thinner, lower build epoxy.

I built the NFC LMX 8 wt fly rod. I tapered the guide size and used double-foot Recoil guides for running guides. Alps as the stripper and second guide. I think it was R2622 Alps Regular XN Titanium Guides

As to wraps, KISS. I make fly rods for myself and typically only use one color on the wraps. Looks simple, clean and aesthetically pleasing to me. If you are good at wraps, you can maybe add a thin accent wrap.
Before picking a blank, you may want to know how and where he intends to fish, how often and how serious he is about fly fishing, and the types of fish and size of fish he will be ca

108. Re: Thread Question
Fuji Ultra Poly No. 19 complements a gray, natural color graphite blank quite nicely. It does not match the blank's color, but provides a nice shade to offset the blank. I have used it on an NFC LMX fly rod and an Epic 690G fly rod.
If you want transparent, as in it looks like there is no wrapping unless you do an accent wrap, then you need to use silk. The full color and shape of the guide

Has anyone built or cast one of the NFC linen rods? I am wondering how they compare to glass or cane?

I think about 1/8 inch past the thread is sufficient. Some OEM rods, i my opinion, put on too much epoxy and ramp it down the blank 1/4 to 1/2 inch from the last thread wrap. Not necessary. As indicated above, it need only be long enough to prevent moisture from seeping into the threads, which you will immediately notice as the thread will turn a bit milky, and then after some hours or a day

If they do not meet your expectations, then I would ask for a replacement or refund. SOP for a disgruntled consumer. I have had good customer service from NFC over the last year and the fly blanks I ordered were quite straight. Alex of NFC is often on this site, but I would not complain or argue here, I would calmly contact them and state your objections. I worked for 30 years for a consumer

I agree with trying Hook and Hackle, nice guys, I would also check with the fly fishing program at Penn State, and I would post on the NA Fly Fishing Forum, and ask the local TU chapter as some of its older members may know.

I like that Glide floss idea. Now that's quality graphite hygiene. Just pulled a few long threads through on some Forhan wraps with regular A thread and the pull got a little grippy a few times.

How much room between the grips? As per above, create some form of sanding block. I often wrap fine grit paper around a ruler and use that as it is nice and flat.

You want the winding check to slide down 100 percent on its own to the grip, so a tiny bit of wiggle room is needed. Buy some cheap digital calipers at Harbor Freight, measure the location on the rod of the winding check, and order accordingly. While one must be very careful, you can enlargen the inner ring of a winding check with a fine rat tail file and/or some fine grit sandpaper.

Modern ferrules are made quite well, to tight tolerances, and are quite strong. I think Tom's rule of thumb is a good guide. I always wrap my ferrules with the blank unassembled and with moderate tension on the thread. And leave maybe 1/8 inch of space between the thread and the butt end of the ferrule, and take the rod epoxy just a hair short of the butt end of the ferrule. The primary reaso

I communicated with TFO several months ago about fly rod blank sales and they indicated they decided to exit that business. There are a few old Pro series of blanks out in the marketplace, but most of the other blank models that used to be available have sold through.
