31. Re: Spine of Rod
The few fly rods that I have built over a forty year span have served me well. I have built them for line weights for pan fish up to line weights for Keys tarpon. When I built my first fly rod, my mentor explained to me the concept of finding the spine of the blank. The blank was a Fenwick two piece blank.
Finding the spine was a no brainer, but it seems that I misinterpreted the reason f

Yes Tom...but unless there is some sort of standard procedure to perform the "stress test" on any given blank, all the data on paper is meaningless or perhaps better put very

The last time I built a fly rod was over twenty years ago. I know exactly nothing about the NFC fly blanks these days, but am looking at the LMXFAF in an 8wt., and the Rod Geeks Carbon 4 fly blank also in an 8wt. I am looking for a fast action rod, as I own other rods in 8 and 9 weights that are slower than I wish they were. I don't need another slower action rod in those weight ranges.

Herb,
Is this technique described anywhere on this board?

I know I'm with Norm on this one. First off, as Norm explained, one of the guys involved in the creation of this program recognizes that there likely are some limitations within it that preclude pure perfection without a little tweaking here and there. That alone is significant.
I'm not a "rod builder", but the ones I have put together over a span of over forty years or so have nev

I only build rods intermittently and either for my own use or for someone in my family that I will use as a gift. The only company I have purchased blanks from over the past two or three years or so from is NFC. Truth be known, because of some things I had read before making my initial purchase, I was on pins and needles for a while and wondered how my own experience would go. Simply put, I ha

I refinished an old Mauser with one of this company's products, and the results were extraordinary. I don't see why it would not work on reels. Give these guys a call and see what they have to say.

Sorry if the information I'm looking for is old news, but does Lamiglas still make fly rod blanks? The last one I built is dated 2003! :-)

I'm not so sure that that ever was the case. Going back as far as fifty-five years ago trout fishing in the Catskills, and depending how I was fishing a nymph, feeling a tap sometimes came in handy. But way more fish were caug

I don't know exactly what blank you are referring to, but I built a 703-1 X-ray LMX, having taken the description at face value. I built it as a spinning rod, and put a lot of time, effort, and all Fuji KL-H, KT and KB running guides on it. I am not unhappy with the rod at all, but the rod has WAY less backbone than I would have guessed it would have based on the line and lure ratings provided.

The horse isn't quite dead yet. I don't know the answer to this question, but you pose it I believe because you think the answer is going to be the shorte

OK Dave, I will take your word for it for the time being that the average human being can detect the weight of a penny added to the top of his golf club when swung. I played a lot of ball, and I fully get the difference in bats example. Although I never fished flies with split shot in fifty-five years, I understand what you are saying, and I agree.
All those things said and examples given,

OK. Now that you so mercilessly pressed Tom for a list of "...other things" involved in the enhancement of sensitivity (whatever that means) of a rod, please explain if you will what significant difference knowing that rod A will be a little more sensitive than rod B is going to make to the average angler.
As an analogy, United Airlines has put a new boarding protocol into place.

So....In my search for an older but decent quality reel, and after realizing that getting parts for Old Florida reels could be a challenge at this point, I got the impression that an Abel reel is what I may be looking for. Aside from possibly being a little heavy, there were no significant critiques of the Abels, and there were otherwise nothing but accolades for their older reels, although thos

I have stated previously that this heated discussion on what makes a rod more "sensitive" would be astronomically more significant if it in fact would make some significant difference to the average angler. Is there anyone out there who thinks that this is so?
The mere fact that there is such an enormous amount of subjectivity in the analysis of sensitivity makes the effort to qua

I know this is a rod building forum, and if this is against the rules, please let me know and it won't happen again. I am looking at an Old Florida 66 fly reel for sale, and my understanding is that they used a cork washer for the drag. People have commented about cork drag washers here and there, and the consensus is that they are a good deal providing the washers are "well maintained&quo

Sorry guys, but this is how it played out.
Ryan said "Since I don't have a drying motor,.....", then his next sentence is... "I think I will apply the thread finish and leave the rod turning on the finishing motor until it set well enough that I can take the rod off and leave it standing somewhere to complete the curing." That led me to believe that a drying motor and a fi

On a technicality, I assume you mean that the line is closest to the blank at the end of the back cast, as the rod has now stopped and the line is now moving behind the caster, the guides are fa

Thanks for the response Herb. It is much appreciated.
Do you have any idea what the ball park ring span of #4 single foot guides are in millimeters? And concerning the tip top...what should the ring size be in proportion to the ring sizes of the running guides? Should they essentially be the same size?
