So my mother is an artist.. And i was looking through my brothers stash of sandpaper.. I was looking for 4000 grit to really make the cork handles feel like grabbing a stick of butter.. She suggested a brown paper bag.. I thought she was nuts.. She told me thats the final sanding process on a laqureded painting.. So what the heck.. i tried it.. Took a little effort, but to my surprise, it worke

Ok.. So i have a fairly decent setup for doing ccs now.. 3 different jigs later... But im still having a hard time getting the AA accurate.. The tip has to be in the half circle of the protractor, level correct? Not the tip top.. But the blank itself?

I plan to put in on the wall if its restored.. I wouldnt fish with it... That is the intention.. Although it would be a memorable experience.. I understand the risk of possible damage..

Hey guys.. So this rod is a 1 piece, 5'4" guides are loose, epoxy cracking at every guide, touch of rust.. Eva grip is dry rotted.. Plastics are worn to the point of pitting.. Ovbiously the trim paint is very close to completly worn off.. So why would i want to have it restored? It was the rod my grandfather tought me to fish on.. I have no idea how old it is... Cant find anything on it onli

Ive been looking into rod vaults.. Hard plastic multi rod box with heavy duty latchs.. I almost always have 3 rods on me.. But 2 are 7'... Tgey make a vault thats half decent for 50$, but is 40" long.. The next size up is 42", but 170$ kind of a unrealistic jump for 2" Ive had a few rod tubes.. One was retractable.. Needless to say, it retracted once with the rod in it.. Good by

Awesome.. Thank you herb.. They can make what i need for about what it would end up costing me to make it myself.. And it seems the material i was looking for is tweed.. I guess.. One thing i dont get.. Whats the big deal with those rod sleeves? Or socks, or glove.... as they are also advertized, more accurately, as braided mesh tube.. They seem like they could cause more harm then good.. To the

I know.. And i am.. I was just stating for reference.. Im acually really enjoying doing ccs tests on every rod i find lol ive been keeping a log, soon enough i should be able to glance at the numbers and have a decent idea of what the rod is capable of.. Its not as hard as learning a second language.

I seriously need to get sleeves, or cloth.. Something.. I am planing on getting a rod vault soon enough here.. But they are hard to fond for 7' 2 -piece rods... I have a really cool leather fold for the fenwick... Wife made it for me.. Unfortunatly we are out of leather.. What do you guys use? I waa thinking of finding the material that the brand, frog togs, uses they have this like.. Papery, pl

And not that this matters what so ever but total weight of the rods... The fenwick clocks in at 112grams ans the mhx clocks in at 126grams.. I find that fascinating the strength of material.. 498grams to bend a 126gram stick...

Wow.. Thats interesting.. Atleast to me.. I just did tested the mhx rod i built.. Man what a diffrence in numbers... The fenwick, advertized as a medium, took 380grams.. The mhx also advertized as a medium took 498grams.. AA is 89° too by the way.. It was advertized as extra fast.. The fenwick was 72° advertized as fast.. So, really? 380 and 498 are both classed as medium.. Subjectively...

Oh, i do give new blanks a proper test.. But the fenwick? Shes a bit abused.. It would be fine with a full flex, it held up fine on the CCS test.. But i was just getting at there was no need to bend the heavily used rod that far to find its spine..

I just got home from work, and just for fun checked the spine again.. I know i did it when i first found out about rod spines, and yeah.. Without a doubt lol its one of the most domanant spines ive ever felt.. I had to put the bend with the guides on the outside of the spine in order to roll the blank.. So.. Obviously, they are oriented on the inside of the bend to answer your question.. Serious

Ive seen that experiment before.. Im curious to see how much of a diffrence it acually makes.. Spine orientation is supposed to help with load on the back swing of a fly rod, or orient opposite to give improved accuracy on casting aim.. Is it even really noticeable?.. I think from spineing my spin rods it improves sensitivity slightly.. But its here nor there since i dont have identical rods.. Ev

I acually did spine the fenwick.. And to my surprise, it was spined at the factory.. I did the same thing on my first build.. It has a curve to the left.. The second is along the spine but straight as an arrow.. I completly hear ya there... Im at a crossroads of weather its wortg finding or not..

When leveling the rod blank, placing the level right in front of the foregrip, does it really matter to take rod taper into effect? I cant see it fluctuating the final centerline by more then 1/8" on a very long rod.. I know im kind of nuts about getting things perfect, but would it effect the outcome that significantly? Im talking about bass popping rods, or lighter stream rods.. Not surf r

You misunderstand.. Dont cut the blank.. Tip top guides.. I have 2 with the same i.d. 2 seperate brands.. One is 1/2 other is 3/4 long.. Although by a degree or 2 since your hanging the weight off the tip top eye, it could change the Angle no? Its not relevant to the forum thread.. Im just curious on this.. My mind is racing with possible ways anything could affect a true reading.. The ccs is a v

Alright.. Lets get this thread back on track a bit.. All the blanks you guys suggested.. Are the ratings based on manufacturers specs? Or are they your own findings through the ccs? With a little knowledge i have of blank construction, and my knowledge of how accurate working in production is.. The manufacturers are going to have diffrent specs for each individual rod.. Im guessing a degree i

Sad part is i spent waaaay to long researching how a rod is constructed.. So i get how material is laid, and how that effects everything... I almost.. Almost... Got the stuff to start making my own blanks... This site stopped that dream in its tracks, i read some threads on the topic, and although i feel i could do it... And have someone willimg to shell out the cash.. You guys put up a solid arg
