Hi Guy's,
Looking to use a size 22 Alps triangle reel seat on a heavy spin rod that I am building. Just wondering if the following reels will fit nice and snug.
Penn 850ssm
Fin-Nor Lethal 100
Shimano Shperos 8000
Shimano TLD 20 (another build)
Also how have people found them? Rod used for live baiting out of a holder mostly.

Hi Adam, mine is a homemade version and I would be lost without it. Sure the real deal is amazing. Also down in Oz.

If not using the two line method, the guides need to be taped on tight. I use electrical tape. Found out the hard way when loading up a 15kg rod and all the guides turned to the bottom of the rod and scratches the blank. I have a rod holder made that I can clamp to a post on my outdoor bbq area. Holder is at 45 degrees.

Hi Guy's,
I need to order my 2nd epoxy kit and was wondering do I need to get new bottle inserts and new syringes. I always keep the syringes in separate ziploc bags. Cheers.

I would sure love to watch some good news stories. There are many good people out there willing to help

Nice Roger. Have had a look at Taig here in Australia and it is pretty pricey. They do look like good quality stuff.

I think ngc and KR concept are slightly different and not interchangeable. But you would want to double check that with someone more knowledgeable then I.

Denis, I to am a newbie and it can be very overwhelming. The Fuji anglers rsrc has some great info. I found some good stuff on the blog pages as well and the KR concept page was also helpful. But the good folks here helped to put all the puzzle pieces together. Good luck.

Just had same happen on standup 37kg just built. Underwrap in A and double overwrap in D thread. Faint hairline crack at end of the feet. But I didn't hear any cracking sounds. Next build think I am going to try lite build epoxy and only single overwrap in C or D.
I feel your pain. Scott

James, thank you. I understand now about the pvd coating. The hxn guides look great. Might put them on my next build. Do you have any tip tops that can handle 80lb? I only found some that go to 50lb.

Thank you for the replies gents.
James, so does the colour option of zirconium have the same pvd coating or is it the bare zirconium ring and all other colour options are it with the pvd coating?
Also James do you have alps ring tips that can handle 80lb line?
Cheers Scott

Hi All,
Wondering is the coloured ceremic insert on ring guides (alps) more prone to chipping or corrosion? The guides are all stated as being zirconium with one colour option being zirconium. Are the other colour options the bare zirconium ring with a colour coating or plating over the top. How are they made and how do they stand the test of time?

Mark, have decided to go with a roller tip. A 14 should just fit over or may have to sand or scrape paint off to fit it on.

So I guess the question that I need help with is if using ring guides on a 37kg rod would you use 12 or 10 as the smallest guide? The shimano backbone that broke used size 10 as the smallest.

Thanks for the input guy's. This is only my 2nd complete build and not really planned or budgeted for. Took my sons mate out for a shark fish and the shimano backbone rod we were using got broken when I had to dump the leader on a 6foot bully. Not sure if the leader wrapped around the tip or whether the angler had the rod tip up to high. Only ever broken 2 rods fishing and both of them backbones.

Cheers Mark, that's what I was leaning towards. Just running all 12's then the 12 tip. Also wonder if should step up to a 25 for the stripper when using a 50 size reel. I am only a beginner still and could use some advice from some with far more knowledge then I.

Hi Guy's, I am about to build a 37kg stand up rod that is 5foot 6 inches long. I am not wanting to go rollers all the way but may consider a roller tip. If I use ceremic guides and tip I will have to use a 12mm tip as the tip is 5.5mm in diameter. Was looking at 20,16,12,12,10,10 then tip. Because I have to use a 12 tip do I still use the 10's or do I just use all 12's? I don't use windon leaders

Hi Roger, your posts about making wrappers and dryers are always welcomed. One day I will get around to making a motorised wrapper. Out of curiosity is there much difference between using a 3 vs 4 jaw chuck.
Cheers Scott.

I am just starting out and have only put new guides on a light spin rod and built 1 15kg stand up rod. Have built all my own rod stands, hand wrapper, variable speed dryer and a few other bits and pieces. For me it has been a wonderful learning and creative experience. So much to learn. Have fun

Cut flush and drill out. If hole gets bigger maybe wrap end of new rod in the ad before glueing in. Hot glue next time perhaps.
Good luck.

Could try a soldering iron for some localised heat. I used some high tensile fencing wire on my home made job.

Hi Guy's,
Just wondering how many people put finish on the whole rod when making standup/ trolling style rods. The 15kg rod I am building seems to get scratches very easy on the blank. I know it would add weight but wonder what other problems can arise. As this is only my second build I am a little concerned about being able to get a good finish over such a large area. Also I wonder

Thanks Norm, I was looking at the Fuji height comparison chart and it dose not have the 8L on it.Maybe the chart is old? Anyway have a 8L on order.Yes Michael I you are probably right about nearly anything working with such light braid. To my eyes it just looked a little funny going from 10 down to a 6 but It would have worked .
