I'm pretty sure my tension is on the high side if anything. It takes some effort to move the guides and then they tend to jump instead of slide when I push them. I'm using AT Guides, the feet need to be ground. When I started grinding my feet, many problems went away. John, I like your method, and I am getting a lot of ideas to get a good system going. This is just another bump in the road that w

I grind all my guides, and I have no problems wrapping them after I started doing that. The thread just climbs right up the foot with zero issues. However, it is fairly difficult to move them so it may be too tight. I have a homemade thread tension device and I can adjust a little. I've ordered a Flexcoat wrapper (the whole shbang) but it's been on back order for 6 weeks now but I'm hoping that w

So, there has to be a better way of straightening guides. After I meticulously wrapped every guide perfectly, I stand back and admire my work and think to myself, I'm really getting somewhere now. Then I straighten the guides and for some, it causes a slight wrinkle, or it causes the threads to overlap just a hair at the foot, maybe scrunch up. If I used NCP thread or if I used Nylon thread with

I feel your pain. I'm trying to get just three different rods to offer, a 10', an 11' and a 12" or 13' and all I have found thus far is the 11' from RodGeeks and I won't know for sure that will even be the one till the pomps start showing up in the fall. For the most part, it's very slim pickings out there. I hope you find what you are after!

I've never fished the GSB's so I couldn't tell you. I do know that the Rod Geeks 11' that I am building now has some S-Glass in the tip so it may be similar to the GSB but the most of the Rod Geek Surf Blanks are all graphite (which should be faster) and the ones that do have S-Glass in the tip state that. I'm a pompano fisherman and I like my rods on the slower/moderate side, keeps them pinned.

Rod Geeks has many offerings in the 10'-11' ft range. I've built a couple now for some clients and I'm building the Surf Blank Series - SRF110MM2 for myself, should be done in a day or two. It's more moderate but most of their rods (and everyone else's) are MF, so they may have something. Look at this one. Surf Blank Series - SRF100MMF2, you can find it here. The prices are very fair and they ar

I had the same issue on my vintage Lami re-build. I have a "smoke effect" forever buried in the epoxy from a Bic lighter, only to learn later that lighters are a no no. Heat gun for me from now on.

So I'd like to do a marbleized butt wrap, but put it between thread wraps. For simplicity sake an example would be a 3/4 inch thread wrap followed by a 3 inch marbleized wrap followed by another 3/4 thread wrap. Should I tape off the area on either side of the marbleized wrap, lay down my marbleizing and then pull the tape when it starts to set? Then go back, do my wraps, epoxy those and the marb

So, I ordered two surf rod blanks, the SRF110MM2, in one color, Pearl White and the combo SRF110C3 (one butt, 2 different tips), in two colors, Ice Blue metallic on the top 70% and Pearl White on the bottom 30%. From order time to my door was 12 days, very good time for something originating in Mexico and getting to me that quick. But, this is a learning experience and I encountered one small pro

I'm not very good at the search, don't know why, I sit in front of a computer all day and do some complex stuff, but this search doesn't jive with me. Anyone else just use one coat?

I ordered the Surf Blank Series - SRF110C3 (two rods in one. really its the SRF110MM2 and the SRF110MHM2 with one butt) for the client with pearl on the bottom and metallic blue ice on the top. Also, I ordered the Surf Blank Series - SRF110MM2 in pearl finish for me. I can't very well sell a rod I don't use now can I? I think the moderate action will be perfect for pompano. My client loved the i

I made a rod and coated the guides with just one coat of Perma Gloss. I really like the look of just one coat, Except for a slight sheen, it looks like you've applied nothing on the wraps yet they are locked in place. Is one coat enough? I did go back and make sure I had some more in the foot areas to prevent water intrusion. That stuff is the bomb, so old skool.

I recently bought this Lamiglas on clearance. It is listed as a Salmon/ Steelhead but it also says it will cast 2-8 oz. in the surf. It's 12'6 with a moderate action, almost parabolic. It was exactly what I was looking for as I mainly fish for pompano and that type of action just seems to get more hookups and keeps the fish pinned all the way to the shore. I built it and put a 3.5 OZ weight on i

I love the stuff and wouldn't think of using anything else. It's tough. I restored a 45 year old Lamiglas surf rod with it back in January and it went on without a flaw. I used some gun cleaning patches. One swipe, let dry, and then do another. Do it outside, I'm pretty sure with that smell it will cause Drain Bamage.
