123. Re: Front Grip
Those front grips are modeled after Jesse Bulky's encapsulated foregrips which were highlighted in the photo gallery of Rodmaker Volume 4, Issue 5. I believe Jesse made them using a mold, narrow pvc tube and flexcoat as a casting resin. He encapsulated all kinds of hat pins and such. I saw them at his shop in Virginia Beach. He's passed on, though, and likely taken details of his technique wi

Hi Gabriel,
Back in the 1980s, custom rod builders made some super looking wood pistol grips. I believe they carved them by hand to fit the user and used Dremel Tool burr bits to give texture. Here are some pics:

I don't know how they were constructed, but it looks like they either used an existing pistol grip and removed the rubber handle or

Fuji’s stamped stainless steel and ceramic ring guide turns 40 this year. Developed in 1972, it was a paradigm shift for rod building. Ryuichi Omura, Fuji’s president and 8 time All-Japan casting champion and his son Rintaro, brought the guide to market in 1973 and transformed the labor intensive wire-brazed guide construction process into a high-speed metal stamping and shaping system.

I had a great time. Morris taught us how to dance with our lathes, make things round, and do shop math. Not including our instruction, we practiced turning for 5+ hours. We turned rod handles in a completely different way than I anticipated -- so simple. Great tips and advice, too, on bevels and sharpening. Lots of pine, poplar, cherry, and mahogany shavings on the floor by the end of the da

I built a golden ratio caliper and use it often when to determine positioning of trim rings in handles and lengths of decorative wraps. I made it out of cardboard and pins. Here's a link the plans:

I gave a close look (and flex) to the little Seeker S-glass 5'6" 2 pc trout blank at the Custom Rod Expo for a similar project. I believe this is the blank you seek; it's on my "to do" list for a similar application. It has a unique pale muddy green color.
You can't beat the Expo to check out blanks. .

Hi Joe,
I just built my go-to smallmouth rod for this season - I fish light Brewer slider jigs in rivers:
The rod is modeled after a smallmouth rod detailed in Rodmaker V7, #1, pg. 10. The rod is built on a 6’ durable and light Batson SB721 blank with Alconite guides. It’s got a 25Y butt guide and casts great with braid using a Quantum 10 reel (40mm diameter). It balances on the lea

Hi Jason,
Batson's Spin Bass blanks will work for you. I build smallmouth (for NC) and brown trout rods ( for New England) in their RX6 series and have been happy with their stout butt, light tip, and durabilty for bushwacking through brush to fish pocketwater and ledges in NC rivers like the Yadkin around Pilot Mountain:
You can trim these from the butt. They make great slider rods, too

Hi Geoff,
This is good news for those of us who seek really fast fly blanks - and gloss black is a great choice. If they're available, I am looking forward to checking out these blanks at the Custom Rod Expo in February.

My brother wants a fly rod that casts and feels like my rod built with an Allstar Austin BAF904-4 blank. I noticed on the SuperBob site that there is a Dan Craft blank that mirrors the Austin’s ERN and AA:

BAF904-4
ERN: 5.05
AA: 66
Dan Craft
Five Rivers FTL 905-6
ERN: 5.05
AA: 66

Herb, I have used your inserts with trigger seats. I cut the trigger off of older Fuji fps trigger seats (available on Neal's Fishing Products dollar page). I have made some nice spincast rods for kids using these seat assemblies. See photo page for example.

I am considering trimming the tip and butt of a 2 pc fly blank by an inch or inch and a half. Before I trim, I would like to hang my bag of pennies and wire marker from the spot where I would trim to get an AA and ERN.
Would this give a good ballpark CC measurement, or should I subtract the weight of 1 penny to compensate for weight of the tip section that would be removed?
Thanks in advan
