Spencer,
Thank you. But the page I found only has complete reel seats, I want the components to make my seat. I have some ideas I want to try on this rod and I would like to turn my reel seat as one of those ideas.
Thanks.

I am building a 2wt fly rod and need an ultra light sliding ring skeleton reel seat. So far I have not had any luck. All I have found is the complete handle with ring already on it. Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Thanks to everyone. I have found it described as both a fly rod and a spinning rod. Not really sure what to do with it, so think I'll just put it away until I can decide.

34. Herters RB6J20
I have found a Herters RB6J20 rod blank. I believe it's a fly rod, but not sure. I have googled if with no luck. Anyone have any information on this rod? I know the blank is old as Herters is not as prevalent as it once was. As I recall this was a Cabela's brand, now Bass Pro. At first I though it was a Fenwick as it is the same color as the old brown Fenwicks.
Thanks for any help.

Ok,
For years I have spined my rods. But recently I have read that it isn't necessary. So what is the consensus here. Should we spine our rods or not, if yes how do you actually spine your rods.

Another builder and I have been discussing the merits of thinning epoxy wrap coating. I was wondering what seems to be the consensus. Thin or not to thin.
Thoughts?

Peter,
I actually thought the same thing. "Great minds...". I am waiting on my acceptance into one of the Bamboo rod forums now. Hopefully later today. I am leaving in a little bit to meet with the Neb Game and Parks to build some rod lathes for the class. They have a complete shop so we are going to do a production kind of thing to turn out about ten today, or that's the plan any

Thanks to everyone who responded. We fully understand that Wayne's formula was for cane rods and of course Dale's formula was for Glass, but my students tend to be inquisitive about the origins of thing. Hence the questions on where the charts come from. To be honest, we use the charts from the blank manufacturer, then adjust to eliminate any flats using the standard flex test.

I am teaching a class in rod building for Project Healing Waters. We are to the guide placement section and had a question on formulas for guide placement. The Hexrod site has two calculators to compute the spacing one is based on Dale Clemons book, the other on Wayne Cattanach's book. I have both books and can show them the Clemons formula. But for the life of me I can't find the formula in

David,
Its amazing watching these Veterans overcome their handicaps. We have Vets in wheel chairs, lost arms and legs and nothing stops them. They have an indomitable spirit and it's an inspiration to me every time I fish/meet with them. Amazing how small all the other problems we are facing appear when compared to what they have overcome and continue to battle.
Thank you for your willingnes

Todd,
Many thanks. As a matter of fact I posted this to the Mudhole Facebook group page and got a response from a One Arm Vet who built a rod. I am putting him in touch with the vet in Texas who is asking for help.

Todd,
Thanks, its been one of the most rewarding things I have ever done. It was an honor for me to have served and now to be able to give back to other Veterans is really an awesome opportunity.

Great job! I assume the AC - DC converter and speed controller came with the motor? I have been considering an old treadmill motor. I have one that's 90V 1/3HP but no power supply or speed controller. I have thought about building the power supply and controller, but just don't have the time.
Also, on your wrapper, what type of aluminum did you use for the rod supports and how did you bend

I am a Volunteer with Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing. We work with Disabled Vets through Fly Tying, Rod Building and Fishing. I recently had a request from one of our Veterans on any information on how to build a rod if you only had one arm. At first glance I can see several approaches, but I wanted to toss it to the Experts and see if anyone on the forum has experience in doing this. Spe

I echo most of the comments here. I started with the Clements book over 20 years ago and I still use it today. For me a simple cross wrap adds a real "zing" to the rod especially if everything is color coordinated. I just got in to weaving a few years ago and the process is not too difficult. For me I can't weave for more than an hour or so and have to stop. I enjoy the process, bu

51. Cordura Rod Tube
I have been making rod tubes from wood and PVC for a while now. I would like to find a way to cover some of them with Cordura like some of the commercial rod tubes. Has anyone ever worked with Cordura to make the tube covers? I seem to remember several years back seeing an advertisement for just the covers that could then be stretched over the tube, but Google hasn't yielded any results so far

54. Re: rod balance
What about a split grip rear handle? That would allow you more flexibility with reel placement.

I really appreciate everyone's response. I think I understand a lot of things now I never considered before. That's one reason I truly appreciate this forum, I can get expert advice on a wealth of subjects. I never considered the rod under stress discussion. We don't catch many really large fish here in Nebraska, so never really considered the stress angle. Line slap is one issue I have enco

Tom answered a question in this months magazine about guide sizing. I have seen this discussion before, but I will be teaching guide placement to a class next week. Tom makes an exceptional argument for using the same sized guides. This makes sense to me for fly rods, casting rods, and spin cast rods. Not so much for spinning rods.
I personally prefer to use two or three different sizes

I am really lucky. My wife and I bought the house next door a few years back. Just a small little house and the price was too good to pass up. So she has the upper floor for her art studio. I have the basement. The basement is about 24X28. I use one half for my wood working shop, the other half is split in half. One half is planned for a small metal working shop. Have the tools, but need

Pretty much what everybody else has said, Patience is the one thing that cannot be taught or bought and I think its the most important thing we have as builders. I have tied the same guide on a rod six or seven times just because it didn't look quite right. So take your time and enjoy the art form. It can be very relaxing while at the same time very frustrating. I have walked away from my be
