I have built on the K2, Bass Recon 2 and the M1 blanks. The Recon Blanks are very dependable and just a good all around blank for bass and inshore saltwater. The M1 is great light blank and reads a lot like the Iron Feather as far as the build material (nothing about Toray). I had at least 3 M1 blanks break and I will not build on them anymore. The K2 blank is in the price range of the Iron Feath

If you are going to use a power wrapper, you will need to learn how to use it. Once you do, you will be able to do tight wraps. I can actually wrap tighter with the power wrapper consistently. There is a learning curve and you will almost have to abandon your hand wrapper. A definite advantage to the power wrapper when applying epoxy. The power wrapper needs a station or a designated area but the

1) A Spiral wrapped rod will cast farther than conventional casting layout.
2) My girlfriend: I love to fish. (Later you marry her and she starts saying: All you want to do is fish and make fishing rods.)
Danny,
The guides make the rod bend the way it is going to bend and not the spine.

The USPS changes postmarks all the time, it is SOP for them. They have been doing it for many years, I know I have family that works for them. Good luck with your claim, I would try to go down to your local post office and talk to the postmaster or someone else in charge. It gets real when someone is in their face.

I have been using them for about a year and a half and have had no failures or returns yet. The guides are very light weight and the rings are thin. I have been told that the ring material can take more flexing than the Fuji material but is still very hard with a smooth surface. They also make titanium hook keepers.

Did you notice that his left arm was bleeding, with it dripping down his arm. Not sure why with sponsors, would he repair his rods, especially such poorly built ones. His next blog will be "How to Administer First Aid".

No way are they necessary on a 3 wt fly rod. I will only use them on offshore and longer beach rods where there will be more force on the blank, Inshore and fly rods, they are not needed especially when you want it light.

The tournament fishermen I know use these heavy power rods to throw hollow body and semi hollow frog lures and other types of lures into heavy brush like reeds and lily pads. Hook it fast and bull into the boat through the cover. They call them broomsticks and typically the longer the better (7'6" to 8').

A standard tip should be fine unless you are trying to pass some kind of large knot. You can use tape to make it fit but you will have a gap that the rim hood on the reel seat won't cover so it will not look all that great. I would just get another grip or reel seat that will fit. the grips are probably less expensive than the REC reel seat. There are some others here that may have a better solut

I usually use aluminum winding checks and I mainly make rods for saltwater so I cover my checks with wrapping epoxy just in case the anodizing is no good or gets scratched (like I have seen happen) and begins to corrode. It also seals the cork or seat for water leakage into the seat or under the cork through capillary action. To me it looks better or cleaner. I also put winding checks between the

Yes it will work and no the feet on a fly reel seat are not too small. Also a spinning graphite / plastic seat is usually lighter than a fly reel seat. It will be a custom rod, do what you want with it.

I use the paste epoxy that is used for reel seat bond to the blank and arbors on all kinds of stuff. I have had it on my washing machine to fix a nob mount on the control panel, that gets turned on a daily basis. It has held for at least 5 years and it sets in 15 minutes. What Roger is saying is mostly a fact, the faster a resin sets the more brittle it is. The chemistry of an epoxy can also be c

I use a lathe on high speed. 80 Grit screen paper that is used for drywall to shape then 250 to smooth out. Do not hold on the surface too long because it will heat up and the EVA will melt. Shape / sand in short strokes and smooth out in longer strokes. To finish the surface use a general purpose 3M Scotch-Brite pad cut in 1/4" to 1/2" strips. Doesn't take much to get a nice finished

I have measured the weight on Minimas and Fuji Torzite, SIC and Alconite with a jeweler's scale. At the 5 to 4 mm ring sizes all the Fujis are lighter than the Minimas and between the Fujis they are all over the place because of inconsistent frame stamping or adhesive applied to the ring. So a Torzite guide with a Ti frame may not weight less than a SS frame with a Alconite ring. On the larger si

Michael,
Use approximate locations on the radius then make the line as straight as possible, keeping it off the blank as much as possible. I try to position the first bottom guide behind the major bend of the rod. This may lead to not having them at exact placement as posted in that the other website that can not be mentioned on this site.
Good Luck,

I apply epoxy after about 2 hours but these are on one layer wraps and not weaves or under double wraps. Have not had any problems but I live in the south where it is warmer.

They look like they would match up Fuji K frames 5, 4.5 and 4 Torzites or be light strippers for a fly rod. I like that KW look.

A blank that is in pieces (2 piece, 3 piece and 4 pieces) will have a spine for each piece and they may not line up visually looking down the axis. Most builders are going to build on the visual axis so that all the pieces line up on a straight axis as viewed looking down the blank otherwise the finished rod will look like a snake's back. Some will build with the tip up and some with it down. Sin

X2 North Fork Composites. The discount is taken in the basket. Many to choose from. A 5 weight is a great starter rod for what you want to catch and 8'6"-9' is a good length. Batson / Rainshadow is also a good choice.

The RV 6 guide has a height advantage in a small ring size. I use it as the largest guide (stripper) in my micro guide trains. I believe it is perfect for spiral wrapping due to the height because it keeps the line off the blank and if used properly (opinion) can keep the line as straight as possible going into the spiral. Back in the 90s I would use single foot spinning guides as the stripper on

When I first started I would get uneven places in the epoxy because I did not have a dryer. I would wind up using sandpaper to even out the hardened epoxy. I found that solvents like DA and Acetone would make the surface sticky and hold the dust to the surface. Water and spit actually work better and doesn't leave any residue. You need to be careful with rags or paper towels because they can lea

The difference in weight of stainless framed guides and Titanium frames in almost negligible with small guides. The SIC ring material actually weights more than the Alconite so you are not going to see any difference in performance because they are almost equal. You sound like you are using a 6mm RV and 5mm KB / KTs and maybe even 4mm rings. When they get that small the weights are all over the p
