lol ..... Guys .....you still aren't getting what I mean.in my last few posts. When I brought up TNF in my last couple of posts. it was to compare it to ERN. They were to put TNF in the place of ERN When you express TNF you express it in a value of cpm. What value is ERN expressed in? Get it? I am not slamming CCS and ERN as comparative tools. I'm not slamming TNF as a comparative tool

Imagine that .... adding weight in the lower end of a rod or behind the reel seat doesn't affect the performance of a rod that much. Whodathunk it.

Kent, you're not even close to what I am speaking about. Direct your posts to the members that you have a problem with their testing. I am speaking strictly as to it would be nice to know what an ERN number represents as far as the amount of weight an ERN number represents. Michael, you are missing my point all together, and I don't mean to sound as if your numbers are useless. When I said

Michael ....... regarding your TNF data ...... why do you express your data in cpm? What is cpm? Cycles per millisecond? Cycles per minute? Cycles per millennium? Going by your latest response, and the responses you've consistently given on CCS ERN numbers, you can't define it. And it doesn't matter what cpm is anyhow, because it just matters that one number is higher than the other, and that

Norman, I can see your point. And even though I could say that common sense should tell you that you aren't going to cast something that weighs 560 grams, or 19.75 oz. we all know that common sense isn't common in everyone. And Tom, I agree with you on the comparative nature of CCS. That's what it's for and it does the job quite nicely. I just can't relate to ERN. Right now I can look at

Nick, the drop shot rod that I mentioned liking quite a bit but wanting something with more power, is built on the same blank you mentioned. The DS 6107 IM. If I never went up to Lake Erie, I would be completely happy with it. It's a great little rod. It's going up to Erie that has me wishing for a bit more power. And it's not so much the size of the fish, it's the depth of water and the length c

Aaron, sounds great. And thank you for the offer or letting me e mail you. I appreciate it and I will probably be e mailing you very soon concerning that drop shot rod you're liking. As far as my jerkbait rod. I went out for a few hours this past Saturday and gave it a little work out. The water was 45 degrees when I put in. 46.7 on the main lake. And while I really wasn't expecting to catch

Norman, me too. I have had factory spinning rods that were full length cork rear grips where the threads have to be exposed and they were extremely uncomfortable to fish with. I've had a couple of Shimano casting rods that had up locking reel seats, and they were constantly coming loose during use. I can imagine the same thing happening with a spinning reel seat of the same type. And please d

Michael, I get that CCS measurements are used to compare one blank or rod to another. ERN is the term CCS uses for the power of a rod. The power of the rod is determined by using weight to deflect the blank, so ERN is weight based. The higher the ERN number. the more powerful the rod. It would be no different if grams were used. A rod with an IP of 500 grams is less powerful than a rod with a

IMO what Roger described of placing the reel seat based on the balance of a rod and reel combination isn't a good idea. What good is a rod and reel combination if you have difficulties using it? And depending on the length of the rear grip, the difficulties could be such that stop using the rod all together. One thing about rod building is that if you make a mistake, you can tear the rod down and

Michael, as to whether I believe TNF is an indicator of sensitivity, I am still trying to wrap my head around it. If I have this right, you're measuring the osculations of the blank. The higher the number, the more times an osculation occurs over a defined time period. Since it is well accepted, and I have come to totally agree, that stiffness to weight ratio is the determining factor for ro

Just some personal observations .... I personally would put more stock into the information Michael and Norman are speaking of as being helpful in blank selection, rather than the tone a blank emits when tapped. It seems to me that measuring tone, would be what started this thread in the first place, and that is simply out of curiosity, to see if coincided with peoples perception of sensitivity.

As usual, Tom is spot on. We're making more out of this than what it is. 99.999 % this is a humidity issue, and increasing the humidity will take care of it. And, as Roger mentioned. keep the dust making activities in the room you apply finish in, to a minimum. And if you do as I do, and perform activities that create dust in the same room, a thorough cleaning prior to applying finish has alwa

Why do you guys continue to play with this character? We all know what happens when you put food out for the neighborhood strays. Eventually a skunk shows up and messes up the party Of course if you want to stink the place up, keep putting the food out to where the skunk can get to it. Or ...... you could do the entire neighborhood a favor, and put the food dish where the skunk can't get

I'm a bass fisherman, and for the most part, I have been able to find blanks from a couple of different manufacturers that have attributes that fit quite nicely, if not perfectly, for the type of rod I was hoping to build. The only two type of rods I am having difficulty finding exactly what I want are a drop shot rod, and a jerkbait rod. Of the two drop shot rods I've built, one is a completely

Michael, I think your postulation concerning how quickly the Quickline series of blanks went away, is probably spot on. I built two rods on the blank I mentioned above, and like you, I broke one of them in a manner that completely surprised me, That rod had never been whacked on anything or mistreated in any way. I had also fished it for a couple of months before I broke it, so I doubt it was any

Michael, I am not minimizing nor am I poo pooing what you're doing, or what Kent is planning on doing. Quite the contrary. I applaud what you're doing and believe that it will be useful information. And while I don't think it will necessarily transfer to use on the water in all cases. It will answer one of the most frequently asked questions I see on rod building related forums. And that is, whic

Russel, will do. I did CCS tests for IP and AA when I was setting it up for static load. IP is 533 grams. AA of 72. Based on the published dimensions for the blank, I was expecting it to be faster, and a little less powerful. The blank dimensions don't match those that are published, and the difference is well ........ pretty significant IMO. I also ordered an MB 704 IM at the same time, and

I have 2 rods built on what I thought were MB 736 X ray blanks, but the blank dimensions match those of the SJ 736, so I am going to start saying they are built on SJ 736 blanks. I absolutely love the rods I have built on them, but I am a bass fisherman so I use them for football jigs in the weights that Aaron mentioned above, and they are absolutely awesome for pitching 5" weightless Senkos

Daniel, in reference to it being a fly rod .... as I was reading your opening post I thought to my self, I wonder if it is a fly rod LOL Definitely a bummer that it happened, but a GREAT story to share with us, and others. And as you said, kind of a bummer you didn't think of taking a picture in time. That would have been great to show people.

Michael, thank you, and I agree that what works for the individual is all that counts. And please understand that I am not trying to make what you and others are doing is meaningless. It definitely has merit, and will tell you which blanks transmit vibrations better. My concern is that it seems as if feel is being taken out of the conversation. Mark, thank you as well. I too found two suitable apps for detecting how sensitive a rod is. Well ... I actually didn't find them .... I was born with them, and I am using them to type this post. They're my hands and fingers. Yes, I'm being quasi-facetious. But seriously .... I applaud the work you guys are doing, and there will certainly be merit in what you discover. But, are you discounting feel, in lieu of objecti

Roger, I agree. For precision, a Forstner bit is a much better choice than a hole saw. At first I actually tried what you outlined and just sunk an 1 1/4" Forstner bit about half way through a piece of 1" poplar, and it worked great at holding the cork rings for drilling .... until it didn't. I had several cork rings that were larger in diameter, and they wouldn't fit into such a precis

I'll have to respectfully disagree with Mark in respect to the $89 Harbor Freight drill press, as that is exactly where I got the one I bought. While I wouldn't consider it a precision unit. it is more than adequate for the tasks I have used it for thus far. I don't have a dial indicator, but it runs true to the naked eye. The table is flat and square front to back to a bit mounted in the chuck,

I just started turning cork grips, and have only built two thus far, so I am about as beginner as beginner can be. With that said, I would think that whether or not you'll be turning the grip on a lathe or power wrapper, and if you are building the grip to a specific dimension, is going to play into what route you may want to go. If you are turning it on a lathe or power wrapper before shaping
