I like the looks of the RX8 XSB802.75. Which MHX would be closest to that? Second, how do the Rainshadow HS9000 and the MHX SJ9000 compare?

I've noticed the info on "mudulus positionin", but what is used in them? Is it equivalent to RX6, 7, 8 or a combination?

I'm contemplating what would look good on a XSB820.75 (ti-chrome finish) with an ABU Revo which has Tich trim and a gold ring on the levelwind. That would give the whole thing a Black/Tich/Gold look.
Also, what thread color goes well with the RX8 blanks? I have metallic pewter. Would that be a close match if I wanted the wraps to blend in?

Was that 9 or 10 inches on a casting or spinning configuration?

The specs on these two look very similar. Any comparisons from those who have handled both?

It would be finesse bass and light inshore stuff. Is 1/2oz really the upper range of casting weight on a blank that heavy?
Forum: rodboard 13 years ago

It seems this blank usually gets built for spinning, but will it work okay for low profile baitcaster?

I'm thinking about the LP844, or possibly LP843. I'm guessing either would be a step up in power from my 5S66MLF. I will buid it micro-spiral and use for larger Senkos and the like.

I would love to hear thoughts on these two options for throwing 5" senkos and lighter crank baits. How do the two blanks compare in general?

I have a rod built on a 5S66MLF and love it. If I want to step slightly to fish heavier senkos, light carolina rigs and smallish crank baits, which is closer to what I need - XSB 822.5 or 802.75? Any input on those latter two blanks is appreciated. I will be building the rod casting, using a micro-spiral setup an ABU Revo reel.

Read the first article in the library on this site. It tells you how to set up the NGC.

I agree with getting the largest cork rear grip you can find - I prefer the ones with a palm swell at the top - then cut it right behind where your hand will rest. Use the bottom part (where the butt cap fits) for the but of the rod and the top part up against the seat; both sanded to make the cut side taper the way you wish down to the blank. I would think a cork foregrip about the length of t

Mo, you and I like the UL stuff and I always use Alconite rather than SIC. Both are hard enough for the braid I use, and how much is heat dissipation really an issue on UL? I suppose I could see it for offshore stuff (which I never do), but even the inshore stuff I do never sees terribly long runs. I guess the titanium frames are nice, but I can't afford them.

I would think that the "micro" guides should enable you to add a guide or two and not hurt anything. I typically use 9 + a tip on my 7ft UL and L rods where I use size 3 and 4 running guides. The guides are tiny and I use short wraps and PG for finish so the weight on the end is still minimal.

I love to go on the UL side of whatever I'm chasing and I have had great experiences with the Forecast blanks. I have an IP840 that will easily throw a 1/16 Rooster Tail a long ways, so I am sure Ron's suggestion for the IP841 is a good one. I have also used Steelhead blanks for light saltwater and loved them. I bet the SB780 extended 6" would also work, or the SB841 would work and you wo

Looking for light (but still smooth), using 2lb Fireline up to 4lb mono, so really small lines. I'll be chasing small trout and panfish so I don't need heavy line nor large capacity. The priorities are, first, LIGHT; then smooth.

I have a couple of the old Fenglas casting blanks and they are sweet old blanks.

Helpful comparison Ron. I noticed in an earlier post that you build the 1081s. What do you use them for in your neck of the woods? I would think we would target many of the same species. Does it cast light lures/bait well?

I'm thinking about a light, long spinning rod to throw light jigs and grubs or light floats over crickets/worms; so that means for panfish mostly. A few questions: 1 - would the SH1081 compare to a mid-weight fly rod or is significantly faster than that? 2 - how does the 1081 compare to the 1082? The specs make the 1081 looks lighter in the tip and comparable in the butt. Any other observatio

3/8" OD aluminum, which makes the ID .343". I could also step up to .035" wall thickness and go with a larger OD tubing, but if unnecessary I'll save the weight and stay with the 3/8". While I'm at it - where does AL tubing tend to fail on light rods? Does it split out at the end or bend?
Forum: rodboard 14 years ago
Marty Martin
I'm thinking in terms of a Forecast SP720 which is rated 2-6lb. 3/8" AL tubing with .016 walls will be a good fit as long as it's strong enough. My thought is to us run the tubing the length of a TN handle then glue the blank (appropriately shimmed) into the end. It should make for a 6'9" or 6'10" UL that is lighter than my IP840.

I'm considering the Forecast guides with the H ring in size 3. The tip ring (because they don't come any smaller) would be a 4. Line would be the softer varieties of 2 to 6 lb mono. When I use braid on UL rods, I never go above 8 lb. I don't use swivels on such rods.

I agree with DR. I use a similar rod as my general Largemouth rod.

I prefer graphite rings that fit as snugly as possible while still being able to slide them on the grip as necessary. Any looser and they seem to move on me. One trick that has really worked well for me if the ring is too loose - wrap electrical tape on the cork underneath where the ring will sit (I even split my tape into half-width so there won't be any showing), then put the reel in place an

I have the SP600 and like it for REALLY light and close stuff, but was wondering how the SP720 extended by 8" might work? I already have IP840 and love it. I thought the SP720 would maybe give me the next step down. I have also thought about the SP721 and SP781 but those look more similare to my IP840 in power. Any thoughts from the UL enthusiasts?
