The stuff in coke that breaks rust ,corrosion is Phosphoric acid which you can buy at a lot of hardware stores and then you don't have the sugar to deal with.

I take a 90 degree air sander with a 1 inch disc and sand down over the guide feet or a file to remove the finish and thread pop off the guide ,peel the thread and finish off then find the end of the thread and pull it out from under the remaining finish. I have stripped some rod ( penn ) were the finish wouldn't crack off and a little heat was needed to soften so it would peel off.

I just got one of the flex coat burnishing tools I think it is made out of cow bone. I just took the guides off a rod and was trying to remove the finish the old credit card as a scraper didn't work so I tried the burnishing tool and thought it worked good it is hard but has a dull edge I used the handle part which is curved and followed the curve of the blank.

Chad I use a 90 degree air grinder with 1.5 inch sanding disks I start sanding the tip if it is hot glue the friction will heat it up and they will come off if it is epoxy I sand till there is a split in the tube and the heat expands the tube and I take a pair of pliers and peel off. I do 30 to 40 rods in a hour .try to file a split in the tube then then apply heat.

I have a wooden fixture that holds a deck plate off of a penn conventional reel which when put into a reel seat will hold the rod straight or level for putting guides on i use a over head light that shines to shows the top of the ridge of the blank. I turn the rod over to put the tip on because i found it was easy to line it up from the back.
