Same here when I CC’d my 7’ 3 weight 2 piece. Action angle around 65 which is certainly not slow but many says this blank is slow. I think many get power and action confused.

James Green can make them as light as a 1 wt in fiberglass. Mechanically fiberglass is a better material for light line fly rods but ones under 3 weight is just not popular due to it being a very small niche.

From the info I have gathered mainly from Billy Vivona is that they are 30% S glass 70% carbon. Both materials going linear through the blank with more % glass near the tip.

I have a XC 733 rod that I built out a while ago and agree that is moderate fast action. The 730 is fast action but Billly did mention he designed them as the power goes up the blanks get more moderate action. When I get the chance I really need to CCS measure it to see what the action angle and power is of the 730 blank as I am curious to find out.

Here is a pic of the XC 730 under load from the X Comp Facebook page. I plan on cutting my blank down to 7’ from the butt which won’t affect the power or action much at all but will make it a little lighter.

I haven’t had the chance to build it up yet but I think the new Rod Geeks XC 730 would be perfect. It has a soft s glass fast tip going to a strong mid and a very powerful butt section.Hopefully Billy that designed the blank will see this to chime in.

158. Re: Spiral wrap
If you are using a level wind reel your first guide from it may be 10 degrees the opposite direction of the spiral for the line to lay down evenly on the spool. I did that with my X comp build so I can use both kinds of reels and I like the line to lay in the middle of a non level wind reel anyways. On that build I went from a 16mm down to a 12,10 to 8. I would have changed anything I would skip

I sure hope they get their service all together. There is not many made in the USA rod blank manufacturers and it sounds like they make a quality product.

I don’t know about Prokote high build but with Threadmaster high build if you heat it before putting on the wraps it really shortens the pot life and will have to work very fast putting it on. Some folks that have experience and skill at it to be quick this may not be an issue. For me I do best to prevent bubbles while mixing, apply starting from the tip going to the butt and then hit the wraps w

Yes that is very odd behavior.. but quite normal for us.

I just replaced the black ones on a Pac Bay power wrapper ,that I bought used, with the thicker yellow rings and they are vastly superior.

Better put a patent out on that rod build. Call it the Rattler Rod and it will sell like crazy.

The Rainshadow SU rod blanks are highly regarded probably more so than the newer SUR. I would bet if you put one up on @#$%& it would go for at least $100 and that doesn’t include shipping cost.

Yeah big difference between a rod with a 65 action angle to one that is 75. I think some label rods fast action even when it is Mf just as a selling point which doesn’t make sense. Then some manufacturers confuse power and action. It is all subjective without CCS measurements.

I really like the Fuji PTS. I think I will like the PMTS even better once I try it. Prefer a small and thin trigger with a reel that I can palm.

169. Re: Surf rod
If I didn’t already have my St Croix Avid 11’ that I built I would buy the Rod Geeks combo that has 2 tips one with s glass moderate action 2-6 oz and a stiffer Carbon 3-8. That right there would cover at least 60% of the fishing I do here in N.C. I have a made in USA All Star 1266 1-4 ,that now doesn’t supply blanks, is great for lures and light bait.
Is he fishing for pompano or bigger fish

I would check out Anglers Workshop private label surf rod blank made in the USA by Talon. They have a 11’6” 1-3 oz 50/50 split 2 piece blank and being under 8 oz is fairly light.
Another blank is the Rod Geeks surf series, they have 1-4 oz rod 70/30 split 2 piece blank. I have a St Croix Avid surf which is very similar to these.
As for guides I like the Alps mxn in black or tich but also Fuj

The Hitena A thread at least visually is very close to Fuji A but has very good stretch. I think some manufacturers A is thicker than both of these. I think the AA will be great for fly rods and thin trim bands. Will be find out really soon.

Gabriel,
Great to hear the new colors of thread will be available next week. I will be making an order as I have some fly rod builds I need to get done.

I am certainly not one to tell anybody how they should run their business. This is only a suggestion. I understand for simplicity sake the flat rate shipping but is it fair for the person that buys 7 ft blanks to help cover another that buys 8ft plus. Since the FET tax per blank is added at checkout for transparency why not a one time oversize shipping fee for blanks 8ft and over?
But then St

Just picked up the new Rod Geeks XC 730 blank at the expo. Haven’t had a chance to build it up yet but I bet it would work well. Fast action with lots of power. Could be extended 3 more inches pretty easily.

That is a good find. I know Lou Auret as well as others talks highly about those blanks.

Looking at the blank catalog they are not the same , the inshore is .4 oz heavier which tells it has thicker walls and more power. I have been told that the inshore blanks are 1/2 a power stronger than the freshwater version.

Hopefully Billy will correct me if I am wrong, I think cutting off 3 inches off the but of one of the 7’3” XCs wouldn’t change the power at all or too little to even notice. They have very little taper from at least 2 feet of the butt which is a great design to being able to trim and I think it makes installing the grip and reel easier.

Agree with all said, one thing to add, check out nfc website guide spacing chart for your blank to get the spacing close to ideal for the running guides.

Yeah Billy, I just saw the photo on your Nerbs Facebook page and liked it. Glad to talk to you with my boys before my oldest had a lack of nap meltdown which meant it was time to go. I wish I spent more time on Saturday at your booth and flexing the 8’ XC blanks. I fish mainly from kayak, pier and some bank so the 7 to 7’3” rods suit me well. I think the 730 will be very versatile. I think I am g
