Fuji and Pac Bay. The Fuji A is pretty thin for a. Pac Bay lays down very smooth for me. I am using a Flex Coat hand wrapper with the sewing thread tensioners.

About your ? about has anyone used the klh on a surf rod. I built a 10.5ft 1-4 ounce rod with them as reduction guides but only use 14 lb fusion braid with it. Starts with a 16mm which Fuji would recommend a 20 but I tried it and with relatively heavy surf lures it cast great with the 16mm.I doubt this setup will work with mono unless it was very low lb test.

For a young man's rod I would go for the durable double foot for the reduction guides. Not because of the fishing on sand but just putting the rod in a tube for travel.

I would use the double foot k guides for the reduction then single foot for the choke and runners. The difference in weight/performance between a kw25 vs klh20 will be very little to justify losing the durability of a double foot guide.

One of these days I am going to build myself a one piece fiberglass little stream rod around 7 foot just to put in a rod tube and toss in the bed of the truck. No ferrules to worry about loosening while fishing.

There are quite many 8'6" fiberglass fly rod blanks that are 6 or 7 weight range. I am in the process of building a vintage Sceptre rod that is 8'6" that has a progressive taper that can handle several line weights .

I am going to look at the Rod Geeks inshore as well as Get bit Outdoors Liberty line of blanks at the ICRBE. I want to use it for a similar application for NC sound fishing around Nags Head. I have heard great reviews for both and they look like a good value.

Hey Walter, I fish the northern obx with a St. Croix Avid 11 foot 3-8 ounce and I really like this blank. I can cast up to 7 and bait with it and will eventually build a heaver like you want in the future. Usually if the conditions are rough to need 8 or more to hold bottom the fish are closer to the beach. I just don't see how going much more than 11 foot will help with distance anyway with t

I can tell you there is a learning curve going from using Flexcoat lite to the Threadmaster high build. It will set up twice as fast and does not release bubbles as easily. I have not mastered using it as well but do know now that you have to make small batches and work very quickly. If I did my wraps again I would of used the lite build to do a first coat to soak into the threads then go with a l

Yeah unless you plan to use it for 1-2 ounce lures as well I would go with the 2-6 ounce rating for more versatility. Even at 10'6" it is still light enough to hold in hand.

I would check out the Rodgeeks 9 or 10 foot surf blanks rated 1-4 ounces. Also The Anglers Workshop IM6 8'6" steelhead blank 1-4 ounces which I am about positive is made by Talon in the USA for them. I mainly fish the northern outer banks near Nags Head where the current is usually much stronger than the southeastern section of NC and with taller waves. The length of the rod for your situati

Most builders aren't going to spend $60 for just one RV guide. Once they bring out the stainless version I will buy it and I am sure many others. If not maybe Alps or American Tackle will fill the void.

Yeah a 30 would be the largest I would go with. There is a thread on the rod building forum at stripersonline where someone used a LC 20 going to kw and worked great with 40lb braid. I would also consider using size 8 or even 6 as runners to lighten the tip since it sounds like you won't have a shock leader knot going through the guides.

What size spinning reel and line, mono or braid. are you going to use on it?

I am using size 10 tip and runners on a 11 foot St Croix Avid surf and it makes little noise even with 60 lb shock leader. I make the knot as small as I can and put some super glue on the tag and also before the knot as a ramp. 4 turns on a spinning reel.

Around here in NC a 9 ft surf rod is casting 1-4 ounce lures or light bait from the sand with a 4000 to 6000 size spinning reel. I wouldn't have suggested the carbon fiber blanks as that is a completely different conditions to what I thought.

Hi Glen, Sure he isn't using 40lb braid for the main line b/c with mono that would be a huge reel and it would not cast well at all. I have built a 11ft St Croix spinner and working on an Allstar 10.5ft for light bait and lures. I would suggest to the customer to spend the most $ on a lighter blank and use ringlock in 316 stainless steel. Not knocking the durability of the Gator blanks but

Billy Vivona from NERBS has built that blank for fluke. I think I saw a post about it on Stripersonline. Rodgeeks also came out a boat rod series with Billy's input and one of those blanks may work better without cutting the tip.

Yeah I am going to have to get a hank of chair cane and have some fun experimenting making some rattan grips. I might try different width cane as well.

I am wanting to do a rattan grip as well . I am rebuilding an old Lamiglas fiberglass fly rod and going with a bamboo slide band reel seat. What thread would be best use to spiral in the groove of the rattan? Would size A nylon work and does it need to be the NCP type? Thanks, Dave

I really like my Aspen model 57 fly reel which is an older model that I bought on clearance for $75. It is cnc machined, made in the USA and built like a tank. Only drawbacks with it is that it is slightly heavier than many machined reels, but it balances well on longer rods, and the pop off spool is a little harder to use than a push button type. I just saw the newer version on a well known @#$%

Not knocking Seeker rod blank quality at all. There is always give or take when it comes to weight and durabilty. For guides I like the Alps with 316 stainless steel sv double leg for reduction guides and I believe they are the m doubles legs for runners size 10. American Tackle makes a similar product as well.

Bill he is already looking at the Seeker surf and is asking if there if it will fitwork the bill or is there better out there that I would assume in a similar price point unlike the CTS. If you are looking for a light blank 18 oz is too much, there are plenty 12 ' or close to that are reasonably priced weighing in around 10 oz such as Lamiglas gsb, Fiberstar Composites, and St.Croix which are

Hi Fred, Please give us details on the intended use of the rod such as weights wanting to cast, going to use it in a rod holder or hold it in hand, what beach, target species of fish and conditions. I built a St Croix Avid SCIII surf rod last year to fish the OBX but it is the 11' rod rated 3-8 ounce and I find it to be very light at 7 oz and very versatile. They have a 12' surf rod that

I need recommendations for a reasonably priced USA made composite rod blank for fishing piers on the OBX and for catfish. Need a blank that is 7 to 7.5 feet long or modified that can cast 2 ounces well and lob about 3 with bait with a strong backbone. I am looking at the CRB Composite Inshore that Mudhole has by Lamiglas, Calstar BTG series ,I believe, that has a carbon core with e glass outer,
