Did you get the microwave inshore 30 or the surf/carp 50 guide kit?

I just started rod building a couple years ago and this site has been an incredible in wealth of knowledge. You can use a larger tube that matches close in OD to the tip of your blank then sand the solid glass down to fit inside tightly.Hopefully Tom or someone here has done a 30lb rod that way. I would think a 7 size solid glass would be strong enough as most of the pressure is further down the

Big fan of fiberglass rods that show a nice weave like the Conolons. I picked up some Sceptre fly rod blanks that show that nice weave in the sun.I wonder if it would be possible for you to use a 8 ring and a smaller tube if the blank is tubular glass at the tip where you could use solid fiberglass as a internal stint. This would lengthen the rod by the size of the tip unless you trim it down so

Going from to a size 10 from an 8 is not going to be much heavier and will give you much more options. What size are the runners?

Depends on what species targeted ,techniques, fishing conditions and how your brother-in-law takes care of it. A carbon popping rod around 7'6" would be ideal for targeting channels and bullheads using punch/stinkbait carolina rigged with up to 1oz sinker. I am building a Rod Geeks X Composite 733 neon green for multipurpose NC inshore and catfish. If I was targeting big blues I w

I have been liking Pac Bay thread lately. How does Makoi compare? Looking at the specs they are similar price but Makoi does have more color choices. I am not a big fan of Pro Wrap or Fish Hawk.

I am about to start, whenever I have some free time, on a similar build on a Rod Geeks X Comp 733 to use with an Okuma citrix 350 . From what I gathered is the stripper guide size is determined mainly by height needed to keep the line off the front grip. A fast action rod that has little bend near the grip does not need as much height as a slow action that bends far down.My blank is quite stiff i

I think Pac Bay makes a rugged ring tip top with tungsten carbide with chrome frame.Haven't tried them but they look like something that is durable. If your set on the pac bay tich grey, I do like the Alps zirconium with pvd tich ring and frame. That would be a close match to the pac bay.Braid may wear down the tich layer but that would take a long time and no big deal if it does because ther

I recently acquired an All Star Outdoor Products HLB728 graphite/glass blank and I want to know if anyone here has used this blank or has the manufacture specs on it. This is what I know, it is 6 foot long,12.5 oz on my scale, 25mm butt, about a 12 tip, and fast action with lots of power down low. Versitex website has a 727 listed at 30-50 lb so I think the 8 power feels like 40-60lb. I am hopin

I have heard so many great reviews of the American Tackle Bushido rod blanks that I need to try one out soon.I would also take a look at Get Bit's Liberty line of USA made blanks. They are made with a mix of IM6 and IM7 carbon fiber so they are durable but still lightweight. I would also wait till near July 4th to buy one as their is a chance that Kevin will put them on sale then. He did last yea

A Stingsilver is aerodynamic casting spoon that is usually 2oz that is mainly used for surf or pier fishing. They are very common in North Carolina OBX, I also like the similar ES Lures bc I can get them in more colors and sizes. We need more info on where he fish at such as from surf, sound, bridge, pier or boat to recommend a rod blank that best suits him. As of now I would say a composite blan

I am hopefully soon going to build my Rod Geeks XC 733 acid/spiral wrapped using 0-60-120-180 method. I assuming this method is best for faster action rods with a stiff butt section while the simple spiral would be best for slower action rods that flex into the handle. Is my assumption correct?

Factory rods are setup for general use if someone use a large spinner and thicker mono line. My 11 ft spinner goes from 30,20,12 in Alps SV to mn style size 10 runners to a 10 tip top. With a Shimano 5000-6000 size with 14 lb fusion braid I have not had one birdsnest using the rod. I have it more setup for fish fighting ability than casting distance but it still cast plenty far.If I was really

I put size 10 running guides on my 11 ft St Croix and I think it is a good balance of saving weight near the tip of the rod and having a big enough opening to pass a shock leader knot.

Sounds like it is very similar to a old Shakespeare 6ft fiberglass rod that I have with a few chrome guides and roller tip. I am going to change out the guides one of these days. What issues is your friend having with the current guides? Such as grooving or corrosion. Are you replacing the roller tip? I am about to build a 30lb rod with Alps mxn and XN black and I think they are a good v

Hi Randy, Hobby builder here as well and just like you I find it tough to envision a guide layout as there are so many factors. Luckily for us we have many good folks on here with a wealth of knowledge to help. I think I am going to buy a really cheap set of closeout guides just to use as rod set up guides then order nice ones for future builds by matching heights. Right now I am getting th

As still pretty new to rod building I have found from pulling on blanks at the ICRBE and factory rods that even line and lure ratings are subjective. I pulled on a 30-60lb mojo cat rod the other day and it sure did not feel like it has 2x more power than my x comp 733 18-30lb blank that I am going to build up soon. The problem is many folks use a much higher lb braid than the mono rating and you d

Get Bit Outdoors Liberty P764 in white color would probably work very well. I was handling them at the ICRBE. I bought the P703 for light cranks and jigs but if I had more $ I would of bought the 764 for heavier inshore fishing as well for channel cats around here. The white color would be easier to see in dim light conditions.

Hey Lee, Sorry it took awhile to respond back to you. I would email Rod Geeks because they might know which blank is used for the St Croix Mojo Catfish or one that is very similar, The confusing part is the lure weight recommendation of the Mojo 2-8 oz which is very broad for 7 ft rod to cast, but seems the norm with catfish rod specs as I have seen rods labeled 1-10. It is tough to know if t

I am building a catfish/ saltwater pier rod on a Rod Geeks X Comp 733 17-30lb blank neon green. It does not have as soft of a tip as the fiberglass series but the power still kicks in pretty fast that I think will work great with circle hooks but some fisherman will prefer the softer tip.Their boat rod series are composites and might fit the bill as well.

If I am casting 3 ounces plus bait with 12 lb running line I would use a 30 lb shock leader that wraps around the reel at least 2 times and through the rod with enough drop off the tip. You and your grandson don't want a 3 oz sinker breaking off during a cast, plus it gives more abrasion resistance to the rig and higher pound line to hold on to when bringing fish in the surf. For the running guid

Nothing wrong in trying to get as much USA products on a rod, I try to do that as much as possible. Here is a list that I know off the top of my head Lemke reel seats,REC , AFTCO and Snake Brand guides. Can still find NOS Varmac and Mildrum stuff as well.

I bought a few blanks and supplies from Rod Geeks, Get Bit Outdoors and Mudhole. I plan on buying more from them throughout the year as my hobby money trickles down. I was able to pull on blanks and see new items in person which is way better than a pic on the web.

I picked up a white p703 at the expo and it is certainly a quality USA blank for the price. Going to make this my Miller Lite rod for speckled trout, bass and puppy drum. Sounds like I am going to have to order a p704 in the near future.
