I believe in butt weighted rods for certain techniques, but my rods have weight adjustable butt caps. Your method looks very interesting and should be perfect as long as you're sure the weight will always be needed. You seem to be sure and I say go for it.

I also see no need for spiral wrapped bass rods. I have 3 (high end Bass Pro Shops rods) I rebuilt as spiral a few years ago and I may change them back.

Kendall, we both end up with similar amounts of guides on the type of rods you mentioned and I also learned thru Clemens. I am now in touch with more advice from some great builders on this forum. Guides and guide trains have changed drastically from those days, and we with them. When you start on mathematics you lose me. Lol. I sometimes don't end up with progressive spacing, but I have them wh

Don't make a project out of it, put a good working bend in it and put guides where needed.

If I liked the way it looked I don't think those 2 little arms would bother me much. Wouldn't stop me from doing it again. Point of interest.

Ernie, having rethought this? With a nearly dry brush I would very thinly brush finish on the blank in an area larger than the footprint of the decal and feather the edges.it doesn't even have to be neat. (as long as future coats will cover it) If it's thin enough it won't even try to run. All you have to do is make it (thinly) wet and put it on the dryer. It will disappear when recoated.

When you move a metal guide around on a rod blank while it's held too tightly to the blank, Dressed or not, it's gonna leave a mark.

Try lifting the guide away from the blank a bit when repositioning. No reason to ever file a size 5 KT.

Epoxy is formulated to run around the blank while it turns. I would think trying to keep it from doing that would be very difficult to achieve and possibly quite messy. You might be able to cut a window from Frog tape, apply it to the blank, and apply a very light coat with a brush, and pull off the tape at just the right moment. Better you than me! Avoid 3M painters tape, some of it does not pl

I hear you Norm, we have the ink and the pens. We (my wife) can't get the hang of the nib pen thing. And I can't either. But thank the Lord she does the writing. Lol

I use a steady rest, apply epoxy at both ends while turning the blank to get a clean edge, then come back and cover the remaining areas between the ends always coating the entire circumference. I turn the blank by hand when doing this. it's not hard to get a clean edge. A little practice on a scrap blank goes a long way. It only takes a light coat.

I would throw it away. That would get well rid of it.

There's no law saying you have to coat all the guides with one mix. I frequently coat the reduction train and choke, let it dry, come back and recoat if needed before proceeding with the runners. I'm in no rush, and whatever is convenient for me is the right way.

Had a guy do the George Bush thing while fishing with me in Canada one time. When I explained that the reel should at the bottom he insisted he preferred his way. He did this multiple days Too much pride to fish admit his inexperience. I mean how many times does the reel have to try to spin to the bottom before you figure it out? Lol.

Gelly Rolls come in white. Bill Falconer uses them, He does recommend putting a coat of finish down first and writing on that. I just got one and want to try it on a bare blank as a test but haven't gotten around to it yet. Can't find any info on what to use as a solvent for it, so shall have to experiment. Chris might you know?
