Al, if you don't mind my asking, what makes it the "wrong" blank? Price, dimensions, toughness?

Still laughing, argumentative post! We measure in inches rod or forearm. I hand the guy a rod set up as I said and ask him how the butt length feels. If he likes it that's how I make it. If not I adjust accordingly, longer or shorter in inches or centimeters. Still measured in the same "new rule" fashion. Can't nobody say it ain't easy. Of course we could measure the Kings forearm and w

New Rule. From now on, spinning rod grip length shall be measured from the butt to the reel stem. That's all that matters, and easily puts everyone on the same page. Around here that is usually 10.5 - 11.25 inches. (ultra lights being some what shorter) As said, if you like it, it's good!)

Would this rod we're discussing be appropriate for fishing 5/8 oz. Zara Spooks? I have a build upcoming for that purpose.

Most of my builds are split grip with fighting butts 3.5" or less. Most are tapered blanks. I can, and always do, install them over the butt. Not a whole lot of taper involved in a short distance. Hardest part is perfectly concentric reaming and praying for a winding check to cover. Lol.

You can ream from both ends carefully test fitting as you go. Flex-Coat pilot, and reverse pilot bits can help get you close. I just do the former.

While I have not personally tried this, many here have, and it should work just fine. Perhaps others will chime in.

No reason for the butt guide to have a larger ring than that of the reel (usually a #6) as long as it is of appropriate height. The RV-6 accomplishes this. I once wanted to use a KW-8 because it was the same height as the RV-6, but was told by a respected (by all) source that the #10 was the one because the bottom of the ring was the same height as the RV-6 ring. I would go with the 7. Lol

Go with the 10, it is the correct height to the bottom of the ring. Same height as an RV-6 in order to line up with the reel guide. Or just use an RV-6 and nail it.

I add pigment to wrap finish at times. A little pigment goes a long way. Shouldn't thicken the finish, footballs due to too much finish I would guess.

Spencer, I get the 2" part, kinda, but you're right about the huge guide size (just noticed that) as well as too many.( And I sometimes use more than I could get away with!)

FWIW, no personal experience, but I'd bet Larry to be the safer option.

The purpose of the guide 2" from the tip is to prevent tip wrap. Nothing else.
