I haven't got much experience but I do know that Phenix has a blank with a 2mm tip but it's very expensive I wouldn't cut it up. Maybe they have other ones that small.

When laying out a box do you measure for the box or for the cross and just estimate the box?

Roger how hard do you think it would be to use paste epoxy? This looks like a great way to mount reel seats but I just this morning ordered more pro paste.

I know I am late to this party but I love the Phenix series of ultralights. The iron feather is an awesome blank but a little pricey the mirage is great at a reasonable price.

No problem Herb I was looking at the seats on mud hole that you wrap directly to the handle and thought it might be an answer for Josh's question. I think something like that would be very easy to find the balance point. Sorry got the name wrong they are called plate reel seats I dont know where I got the surf part from. Getting old I guess.

Herb Canter you have experience with surf rods do you use surf reel seats? I was just thinking if you use a surf seat you could move it anywhere on the grip to get it to balance. Do you think they would work for ultra light rods. Sorry dont know how to delete this.

Mike I too learned the hard way not to wrap tape around cork unless you put something under it.

Roger thanks, I think I am going to use a weighted but cap tape it all up including real, cork and guides and adjust until I like it. I prefer my rods to be just slightly but heavy I feel it gives me a faster hook set. I rarely fish more than an hour or two at time do to physical disabilities. So I dont mind a little more weight.

Thanks guys all great information. I think what I am going to do is mock it up and see where it balances best with the real on it. But I am hoping I can get the rear grip shorter than 7 inches.

Thanks Norm I guess what I am wondering is is there a formula for placing the real seat to maximize the abilities of the rod. Does that make sense? For instance if the real seat is 4 inches from the but will the rod perform better given that everything else is equal.

Is there a set distance from the butt to the real seat? Does the length affect rod performance and if it does in what way?

Mark I have never used tru oil on a rod but when I refinish gun stocks I always let it dry for 2 or 3 days between coats.
