I did some searches, but couldn't find the information I needed. Does anyone have any suggestions for a resource for removing old wraps and re-wrapping? Or, maybe some general advice before I plough into this project? Thanks in advance.

As always, thanks Tom. What a resource this site is. If I subscribe now, will I get the current issue. It appears that I really need to read that article you wrote on finishes, and I cannot find the magazine on any local newstands.
Thanks again.

This is my third rod. In the past, I have covered my decal decorations with LS Supreme, however, I could never get it to level properly. After reading more on the subject on this board, I decided to try PermaGloss this time. It does level much better, however, it also bled the colors off the decals. I suspect my brush (an artist quality synthetic) was too stiff. (I also learned that solvents

In a number of posts concerning rod finish, you have referred the poster to the article in RodMaker Magazine. I found an article by Rich Forhan in the "Library" link above, but I wanted to be certain that this was the article of which you wrote. Secondly, if the article I want is in the Excel files, how do I access it. Finally, I clicked on the link (on the left) to RodMaker Magazin

It could be that I was not give the correct information, but I was given to understand that the Triumph rods were built on SCII blanks. The blanks are shipped to China, assembled, and returned to the states for sale. I could be wrong, that is the impression under which I have been laboring.

I had this same problem on the first rod I built (not so long ago). Additionally, I could not discern whether I had received the wrong size tip top, or whether St Croix's chart was in error. I called St Croix, and the first person I spoke with informed me that I had, in fact, ordered the correct size. However, as a precaution, I was transferred to someone in the production facility which assem

My thanks to all. Delamination is a good way to describe what is happening. While I did use two coats of CP, the coats I did put on were thicker than I would have liked. The Gudebrod CP had become quite thick, even after I tried diluting it with alcohol. I do not think I waited too long between applications of the finish, but it was late last spring and I am not certain. I don't think it was

Okay, I probably should have added this bit of information: The epoxy is also cracking at the butt wraps where there are no guide feet, or any other kind of foot/feet. It has simply chipped off the wraps. There also appears to be separation under the epoxy creating "fish eyes?" in a number of locations. I am not certain if this is the correct terminology. These are almost like blis

The wrap finish on a rod I built last year is cracking (U-40 LS Supreme). As I did the measuring with syringes, I feel comfortable that the mixtures were correct. I suspect that the epoxy had reached the end of its shelf life. I have a number of questions: First, can I remove the imperfect finish without removing the wraps, and, if so, how? Second, what are the causes of these blemishes, if

It's time for me to buy more epoxy. In the past, I have used LS Supreme, which has done well for me. However, I would like to use a finish which is less viscous. In it's advertising literature, ATC makes such claims, but are they realistic? My experience is very limited and I would appreciate hearing from folks here.
In addition, my Gudebro Color Preserver has become very thick. I know I

193. Re: rod polish
A professional bamboo flyrod builder once advised me to put one part lemon oil and two parts beeswax into a plastic 35 mm film cannister, microwave until liquid (I did it in increments) and agitate. When it hardens you have an excellent wax suitable for polishing and protecting wraps. I can't say whether this is going "too far", but it has worked nicely for me.

Can anyone tell me how to obtain a copy of this DVD? I will not be able to attend the show in Charlotte this month, although I have an acquaintance who will. He might be prevailed upon to pick up a copy for me, but I have no idea how much it would cost, and I am uncertain that I would want to impose on him. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Instead of electrical tape, try using silicon tape (I have also seen it called "Plumber's tape" and "Tommy Tape"). Secure the reel to the handle, blank, grip, whatever, and then wrap over with the silicon tape. You stretch the tape as you wrap, and after twenty-four hours setting, it is like concrete. It bonds to itself, and is much like shrink wrap. Additionally, it has n

First, let me thank everyone whose advice was so useful on the rod I just finished. This was my second building project, and while I have far from mastered the craft, I believe there is a significant improvement in my skill (although I still have volumes to learn). Much of that is the results of tidbits I have gleaned from this board. Thanks to all.
Now, on to my next question: For my next p

On my first rod, I used the rubber checks which came included with the handle. Everything went fine. For my second, I decided to try a nickel-silver item from Struble. The rod butt at the end of the handle measured .480, so I ordered the .485 size. It looks fine, but it really isn't working as a check as it wasn't big enough to fit over both the thread (size A) and the blank. It firmly ancho

Again, thanks for all the sage advice. I decided to use the old U-40 epoxy, and it is working fine. No hint of discoloration. Thanks!

Thanks for all the replies, folks. You live, you learn. Unfortunately, I put silver metalic tips against black guide wraps, and now I don't want to take a chance on any color change. I also know that the next few rods I build will not have a thread color which can be adversely affected by amber epoxy.:) Again, let me say what an incredibly wonderful resource this site has become for me. I built my first rod two years ago, and I have now just finished wrapping a new rod. When I pulled out my epoxy finish (U-40 LS Supreme), the Hardener had turned an amber color. I mixed a small sample, and it also turned out amber. Can anything be done to salvage this epoxy? I can purchase Flex Coat locally, and will do so later this afternoon, however, I want to know if the LS Supreme can be

Thanks for all the offers. These are remarkable responses to a first time poster. Even though my main question remains unanswered (re: lining the spindle of my reel with the centers of the guide rings as opposed to the edges?), I am very impressed with this cyber community. Using the board sponsers, I managed to find a source for the BYAG 25 ring, ordered it with a few other items, and felt th

Generally, I will be using 20 lb Power Pro with an 8 or 10 lb mono leader. On my first rod I used a 25 mm gathering ring and found it inhibited my casts when I was using a Daiwa 2500 SSII. It works better with 2000 series reels. Unfortunately, it seems that many of the reel manufacturers are moving to 2500 reels and dropping the 2000's. I didn't want to build a rod that I might have difficult

First, let me say that, as a newbie to this site, this is a wonderful resource for those of us just starting out in rodbuilding. So many of my questions have already been answered just by browsing the FAQ's and various posts. None the less, I have a problem. I am building a new spinning rod (my second project) using a St Croix 6'3" Avid extra fast blank (with a Tennessee handle). I am
