Marc There is some kind of silicone contamination on the blank. We clean our blanks with orange cleaner that we buy from Home Depot in a gallon concentrated jug. Make a water diluted solution and wipe the blank clean with a paper towel, then with water, and finally with a dry paper towel. This process should clean off the contamination. It might be a good idea to test the finish adhe

Paul Great question. If you want equipment that is made in the USA and will last check out Flex Coat, in particular the Flex Coat Small Business Kit. It has all the equipment, finishes and glues you need to get started. See the link below. We back up all our equipment and epoxy with over 40 years of proven experience that is only a phone call away. We answer our phone and have bee

At Flex Coat I like to talk about best practices, and on this subject we say that you should never buy a quantity of epoxy finish or glue that you can use in a year, though Flex Coat can last for much, much longer when stored in a dark, cool, dry place.

Lee Our DL713 is what we have in our shop for wrapping any rods we build and it works great. The direct drive motor eliminates all the hassles of pulleys and rubber belts, and you can manually reverse it if you need to. Many belt driven motors have trouble with this. Foot control included. Also, the motor comes with a lock so that you can use the centerline of the wrapper as a guide alignme

Flex Coat Original Highbuild is the same formula for over 40 years. The best surprise is no surprise. Flex Coat Lite has a thinner viscosity so that it is easier to achieve a thin coat, intended for fly rods. Flex Coat Ultra-V is the most UV Protected formula we offer. Great adhesion and longer working time. Flex Coat is on most high performance USA made manufactured rods. MADE IN

I live in Texas and I would argue that our summers that boast 50+ days of 100 degree heat and high humidity will blow the doors off any other summer heat in the USA, besides death valley, but that is a dry heat... Anyway, back on topic, we stand by our Tip Top Adhesive. It would take temperatures of over 270 degrees to soften it. Our adhesive is used on the largest offshore rods you can imag

Yes, our formula is able to adhere better to the rod and components than a standard glue stick, also the guides can be tweaked before and after wrapping. I can understand at first it could be tricky to use, but I am confident that once you try our technique, you will give it the thumbs up. Here is a video on how we do it: Thanks for posting.

Don't want to hijack the topic, but here is my opinion. Our Cork Lathe Setup is simple, cost effective and can be easily stored away not when in use. It works great for cork and EVA. Check out our video at the link below or on our website flexcoat.com

Paul Honestly, I can't imagine applying finish any slower than 200 rpm on most of the rods we build at our shop. Our FM200 is the same set up that we sell to the leading USA rod manufacturers with our OEM Drums. Our 200 rpm motor is USA made and assembled in Driftwood, Texas. Our slip clutch is the original precision milled brass that is guaranteed to spin true and is adjustable for the lig

As far as Flex Coat, we say that you shouldn't buy a quantity that you can't use in 2 years, though, under ideal conditions, Flex Coat has lasted much longer. Crystals in the Part A resin are formed when it is stored in a cool or cold area. The crystals should be melted with heat by any of the techniques listed above. All crystals should be melted prior to mixing. Bruce, if you have any m

Rick When you are reaming from 1/4", it can be a challenge to keep it on center. We make and sell pilot bits that will do the job. Our arbor pilot bits have a 1/4" pilot on them and would do the job. Then you can ream out the small amount to match the taper of the blank. Here is a video of our arbor pilot bits and reverse pilot bits:

Darrel Great question, do not thin the second coat. If you are going to thin, only thin the first coat. Thin it at a 15 to 1 ratio with Acetone. I would bet that there are almost no chemical engineers that read this forum, but from what we know is that many high end manufacturers that use Flex Coat thin their first coat because it makes sense in their production practices. They use Aceto
