Fenwick made the first flipping rods that I recall of fiberglass back in the 60s..

William, it,s no problem to trim the bristles and when you get one to your liking do not throw it away, clean it and reuse it

I,m a painter and I cut the bristles back a bit..It,s easier to get thin coats..I also seal the wraps with CP which makes painting easier and use one coat of epoxy just for the gloss. It,s the only way I know to keep guide weight down. you can not saturate the wraps with epoxy and keep weight down.

Phil, there is an algae in all lakes, rivers and oceans called diatoms..they are coated in silica or glass..they coat our fishing lines, not just on the surface but into the line and are very abrasive..they cut all metals but not ceramics..they turn our lines into files,.Google it..

They seem good enough for zppling epoxy and the bristles don,t come out.

Phil, of all people, you should know that this craft contains a goodly bit of claptrap..lol. It,s another way to describe the rods power.

if your looking a higher glass modulus try a lower modulus like that found in Walmart graphite rods. They don't feel much stiffer than a good s glass rod.

All I build is glass rods, and only e glass because of it,s fish fighting fun as M ark Talmo would say..I get all the sensitivity I need or want from the ten pound power pro line that I use. To me the line is a better source of sensitivity than the rod but the glass rod supplies the best qualities for fighting and landing the fish.

Phil, in seventy years of fishing I have run across only two other people that built rods and one ran a fly shop. It,s not a dying craft. It,s aiready dead. They are the people that may be interested in those numbers but they are so few.

102. Re: Reel seat
I second.what Mike suggested. It,s the only seat I use for fly, spin or cast.

Michael, they may be trying to slow down the recovery rate of the rod with the heavier guides to get deeper hookups. That,s just my guess. I think glass would do a better job, if that,s the reason..just postulating..lol. I think the trend of higher modulus and faster reacting rods is over. The fish need time to take the bait. Graphite is just getting too quick and that,s the reason many fishermen

None that I can see except that the bug may be too large for smaller fish to take well..

Many years ago I went to strictly using two hand fly cast. I rebuilt my fly rods to move the reel seat well up from the butt separating the grips and making two handed casts easier and line shooting the Way. No more one handed painful casts. Bass bugging became painless and I can cast this way all day and night if I want.

That,s been a problem since the snake got eve to bite the apple. I doubt it will ever change. Each of us will have to learn in our own way..I try to not let them pull my strings. My favorite fly is the moose hair bug on a 71/2 foot rod. Just deadly, Moose hair is great for big bugs, lots of floatation to hold up big hooks.

Joel, I think that,s how most of us learn. We jerk the rod back then jerk the rod forward and if you learn to make the jerks at the right time, your a fly fisherman..lol.

Phil, maybe it,s a shorter fly rod. Shorter rods are more accurate just by their nature. Longer rods less accurate especially for short cast except flipping. When fishing hair bugs at cover along the shoreline or pad edges, I liked a rod eight feet or less. Also a shorter rod gives you more leverage. You need enough leverage to get a nice fish to run to deep water and not back into the cover. I s

Phil, the only thing that makes a guide smile is a big tip..Fly distance casters must use wire guides or it,s not considered a fly rod.

Phil,. building a fishing rod is the last thing on my list of priorities. Gas just went up to $5 a gallon..everything is shooting up and I,m on a neutered income. The last thing I need is another rod and I,m not alone on this sinking boat.

113. Re: cork grips
I quit using cork many and now really like Eva,.it,s so trouble free, feels good, cleans easy, hardly shows dirt, and no pits to repair. What's not to like. Even if cork cost the same as eva, i would still use Eva.

115. Re: guide choices
Phil, my average fly cast is twenty to thirty feet but the line outside the guides adds another twenty or thirty feet to give a total cast of fifty to sixty feet..this short cast by the rod is a shooting cast and I feel that ceramics make this cast better than any kind of wire and make for a little longer cast than. wire..

I don,t think I ever grooved a wire guide but they sure have destroyed many fly lines..you can start a season with a new floating and half way into the season it,s acting like a sinking wet line with water leaking through the damaged line..many times I have locked up with a nice bass and I could not feed line because the wire guides were dug into the line..ceramics solved that problem..also, cera

Lance, in my early bass bugging days 8' rods were the thing like Shakespeare Wonder rod,,to this day I do not care for nine footers..I only fish still waters.

What,s funny is that there is no hauling to cast. The line is held against the foregrip by one hand and against the butt grip by the other hand..the fly is quickly lifted into the back cast and shot forward..no hauling but short strong strokes and the line really movev..give it a try Phil..lol. just too much weight to haul.

Good stuff LAnce..I like tinkering with rods and guides and I,m sure you do too..my most favorite build is on a lamiglas im904t pitching rod casting a very large bass bug I make using moose mane on 5/0 hook..I use a720 grain twenty seven foot shooting head with a forty foot piece of #7level line fused to it..it easily fills a saltwater medalist reel..the bug is tied in a Henshall pattern and has
