I spend a lot of time bass fishing and have built most of my ~30 rods on NFC IM blanks. I build the lightest rods possible and am not really concerned with corrosion. For fresh water I can't justify the exorbitant cost of titanium. While I like fuji guides, most of my baitcasters have American Tackle Artus ringlock runners in size 4. They're light and I can use them for flouro, mono, and will

Thanks for the quick replies. I now see no need for a tenon, just a snug fit into the back of the seat. Thanks for taking the time Roger, very informative.

Can't seem to find this through search, but probably out there. I'm building a couple inshore spinning rods and want to use the Aero comfort seat. I turn my own grips, but never done one to fit into an odd shaped reel seat, which appears to be the case with the Aero. How do I create the tight fit shoulder/tenon in cork? I know I can buy pre-made, but want to know how to do this myself. Than

Thanks for the feedback guys - much appreciated. I'll go with the microwaves on the heavier dock skipping rig and the minimas on the lighter rod...I'll make another when the airwaves come out. Eric

After returning for 3 years working in Asia I'm back in US and setting up my hobby rod shop. I'm engineering 2 spinning rods both on 6 foot NFC blanks. Rod #1 is a fast UL to L and I'll use with a Saros 1000 and 6 pound FC for white bass and crappie to throw 1/16 oz roadrunners. I want this rod to be as light as possible - which guides for this purpose? I'm thinking Recoils. Rod #2 is a f

I am a hobby builder and have an inexpensive HF lathe I use for shaping bass and spinning rod grips. It works great.

Cheng, Could be so, but we were dragging the carolina rig slowly over offshore humps so not really casting towards anything in particular. It wasn't the length of the leader in that case, just the lighter pound test must have been less visible to the fish. 2ft leaders may be fine for most cases, I just choose to go longer and reduce the chance the fish won't bite cause she sees the braid. I

Roger, I guess more than anything it's time on the water, feel, and confidence. I guess I should have mentioned most of my bass fishing is in no worse than stained water, if I was fishing muddy a shorter leader would be no problem. I don't have any scientific study results, but did fish with a friend last weekend at a powerplant lake here in Texas and we were both fishing identical carolina

I always use a long flouro leader with braid (4-6'), so the knot comes through the guides. I believe a 2' leader is too short and is only slightly better than braid straight to lure.

I use the J knot for most braid to flouro splices, but use the slim beauty when I need a very thin profile.

Jay, I used an 8mm, 5mm, 4mm, and then the 3mm micros static tested for placement. I've got a pic of the grip - used rattlesnake skin in the split and as a dec wrap. Sorry, trying to get the pic loaded...

I take good care of my rods and my saltwater inshore rods still tend to show some corrosion and stress on the finish/wraps after 3-6 years. My freshwater bass rods are all in great shape after many years - some 20+. Keep them inside in climate control and don't ever bang them around and they should last a lifetime. I have repaced a few old varnished wraps.

I just built a split grip, split seat, 7' MH casitng rod with micros on a North Fork Composite IM mag bass blank and it is awesome! I built it for t rigged plastics with flouro and I've fished it 3 times at a power plant lake near my home and love it. I used AT NIMG-3's after a couple reducers and they're working great so far. Have not tried the micros on a spinner, but the only time I probably

Gary, You might be right. I bass fish in Texas a lot and I've just started rod builing again to replace my commercial rods with higher quality. Since all of my store bought rods are full grips, I've built 2 super light weight split grip, split reel seat casting rods with micros and I'm not sure I like the split grips too well. My issue is 2 handed casts - I tend to just grap the rod and thro

Like others, I glue my cork rings up with titebond on a 5/16" threaded rod with big washers and wing nuts to pressure up to set. I coat the threads with candle wax and have never had a problem with sticking.

Steve, Just to be clear, you are feathering the edge of the scales/skin on the topside after gluing on the blank? Where can I get a scalpel? Thanks

Good question - I'm building a T-rig rod right now also with 3 mm micros for flourocarbon. I was planning on using locking wraps and was assuming I would have enough play to adjust them prior to CP and finish.

You are rigtht, the trim ring sold by Mud Hole for the ACS reel seat has a smaller OD than the reel seat. I have one and was planning on using it on a build today, but now that you point out the issue and I checked , I may decide not to.

I just glued a snake skin with color preserver in a split grip. Can I or should I apply a light coat of epoxy finish before I put on the trim wraps then come back with CP and additional coats of epoxy? I suspsect I'll have a tough time wrapping evenly over the scales with A thread if I don't, but I'm not sure.

Wish I would have seen this thread before I glued one on a bass rod this morning! It's a split grip with the minima reel seat and micros for me, so I suppose I'll see how it works out. After I read this I did compare it to the fuji seats and the trigger is further back. That may be fine for me as Ron says, I tend to palm the reel more often than not.

I've been lurking for several months now and been the beneficiary of all the great info and people here, but it's time to jump in. My name is Eric and I presently live in Houston, but spend most all of my free time in the Texas hill country and fishing. I built and sold custom rods from Fenwick glass blanks when I was in high school in the 70's, having been taught the craft by Dale Clemen's
