I recently had to replace a couple of guides and the epoxy was so hard and the guides were towards the tip that I was afraid of taking a piece of the rod out with my exacto knife so I applied some heat to the epoxy until it softened, thus making it easier to remove. I got to thinking that heating up the rod might be just as bad for the rod as nicking it with the exacto knife. Any thoughts? Tha

Billy, have you used any of the MudHole EVA and how does it compare to Merrick...if that is not to unpolitic a question to ask. Clinton

3. EVA Blocks
I have been searching the Internet this morning and going through our sponsors. Aside from Mudhole and BillyV, who else is seeling EVA blocks, particularly of the quality that Billy V had at the Expo. He says that once his supply is gone, that's it. So I take it that supplies are hard to find. I would appreciate any help available to direct me towards a supplier of these blocks, particularly

Hi Tom:
So, back to the issue of grooving or otherwise wearing out the SS insert, have you seen any of that as yet? Also, about how long have these been out and if they have been out for but a short while, have they been out long enough to show any wear issues? Clinton
PS Great Expo...thanks.

I have been looking for some technical information on the the minima guides. I have gotten mostly the adverstisements. I am wondering how well they are made. My understanding is that they are completely stainless steel and the ring is press fitted into the frame ring. Remember the old guides that were all stainless steel and tended to form a groove? Is this going to be a problem with these l

7. Fibatape
Has anyone used Fibatape rather than masking tape for the purpose of building a reel seat arbor? It is a fiberglass drywall joint tape. It is not a solid tape, but rather consists of a square weave of fiberglass threads; therefore it is very pourous and would allow rod bond to easily penetrate through to the rod blank. I have been considering this, but thought I would try to tap into the exper

I did not finish the blank before applying the decal.
I did not use any CP over the vinyl decal.
I have not had any of these problems with smaller decals.

I did not use a Sharpie marker.
The notion of a contaminated decal surface...the rod surface or the decal surface itself...the white vinyl? Also, what sort of contamination do you have in mind.
I am using HP cartridge ink.
I will have to check the PS layers. There are at least three layers (1) the black background, (2) the fish picture, (3) and lettering. I did not collapse the layers pri

I just applied a few larger decals (1.8 x 4.1 inches) to some rods I made. On a couple of these decals, there were a few dark purple roundish spots, coming up from underneath the decal, barely visible except under strong light. Also, where the edges overlapped, there were some dark purple discoloration along the edge. On some of the decals, there were no dark spots, so they were perfect.

A friend of mine gave me some old Gudebrod thread. I say it is old because it is on a wooden spool. Can this thread be use reliably? It is #A thread. I do not know the history of this thread but it seems to be in good condition and it seems to break at about the point that some new #A thread breaks. This is not a scientific test, as I just pulled on it until it broke...and it took a pretty g

Thanks. Just curious, how do you get to that site. I clicked on the library icon at the top of the page and found nothing. Is there another library?

I was told there is an article on excise taxes in the library, but I can not find it. Perhaps I am just overlooking it. Can someone please give me a reference to it. Thanks. Clinton Terry

20. Cork Filler
I need to do some cork repair on several older rods, hence I need a good cork filler that will hold up well. Mud Hole sells a Rod Builder's Cork Filler. Has anyone had any experience with this? Are there other products that I might look into. Thanks in advance. Clinton

Will denatured alcohol remove it once it has dried? I have also heard that it takes a long time to dry. I live in So. FL so the humidity down here is pretty high. Clinton

Good to know. Do you think it could be sprayed on a reel seat to protect the laminate (desgin) on it? Clinton

Following up on Bill Stevens comment in response to my quandry with a camo rod blank, has anyone used Helmsman Spar Urethane (Minwax). If this is like spar varnish, then it might be suitable for outdoor use. Spar varnish however never hardens in my experience at least so it may be too soft to spray on a rod. Also, I am wondering whether it would dissolve any of the camo design. I do not know

I understand taping the blank and sliding the eva over the tape, but I do not understand what it means to cut a hole in the tape. The tape is wrapped around the blank, so why cut a hole in it. Clinton

Thanks Jim. I am not sure how to slide an EVA grip into place without getting epoxy on the blank above the grip. Clinton

28. Camo Wammo
I put together the handle and reel seat of a camo rod, that is a rod blank with a camo laminate wrap, or at least that is what I assume it is. In cleaning the excess epoxy from the rod and reel seat with denatured alcohol, some of the camo print (design) came off the rod blank and reel seat. What was interesting was that only some of the design was removed by the alcohol. I am going to try thi

30. Camo Split grips
I am looking for some green camo split grips. Mud Hole sells a split grip camo kit, but the cork is not green camo. Mud Hole also has the parts for a regular handle, reel seat, and foregrip for green camo, but no green camo cork for a split grip. Any suggestions from the sponsors or elsewhere? Clinton
