Thanks for all the replies, I'll pick up some paint brushes to use and keep looking for the makeup sponges. Like everything else I'll have to experiment and see what works best for me. I'll check out one of those respirators too while I am at it.

I have read about using makeup sponges to apply the permagloss to a rod blank. Does it matter what kind and could someone post a picture so I know what I am looking for? Thanks, James

The front grip is hypalon, I was planning on using pro glue epoxy if I drilled the seat. I think I am more leaning towards taking the front grip off and doing it right. The vacuum idea still intrigues me though.

I have an old trolling rod and the metal reel seat has come loose. The butt and foregrip are tight but the reel seat rotates easily It has a metal gimbal and a wooden butt. How is the best or easiest way to fix it?

I may have to try a propane torch or cut the tubing down so it doesn't have as much area to conduct the heat away. I have been using my alcohol burner and it doesn't heat up the tubing quick enough over the blank to soften the glue. I have been hoping heating and cooling will crack the glue loose but nothing so far.

I am redoing an old rod and the rod blank is glued inside of an aluminum tube. The problem I have is the tube is bent giving the rod a nasty wobble when I turn it on my wrapper/dryer. How difficult would it be to take the aluminum off and put a straight tube on? Thanks, James

As far as I know he will be using the rod off of a pier shark fishing at night. To me it is overkill but it is what he wants so I can't really argue too much since he already has the 130 to go on the rod. I'll check out the axis line from phenix too. Thanks for the help so far I appreciate it.

A friend of mine wants me to build him a 7foot unlimited rod for his 130 Tiagra. I have looked and found a couple but not sure which one to go with. Cal star grafighter gf770-4xh United Composites cx invictus Phenix Black Diamond Hybrid phd 700x4h I have no experience with rods this heavy so any input on these blanks or any others is more than welcome.

This is my first time building a surf rod so I have a question or two. The blank is from rod geeks srf110mhmf2 and I am building it as a spinning rod with the microwave surf guides. No info came with these guides like they have with the smaller microwaves as far as guide placement. Has anyone built a surf rod with these guides and could get me in the ballpark as to where to place the first 3 guid

My first question is did you file the guide feet down so that they fit smooth and close to the rod blank with no gaps? When I wrap small guides I use a piece of 40lb mono, tie it in a uniknot and then use that pulled tight to hold the guide against the blank. you and either cut it off or if you leave the end of the knot long enough you can pull the loop loose and reuse it.

I am restoring an old rod with a chipped white surface coat. In a few places I can see down to the bare blank, in others it is only a few layers scraped and scratched off. There seems to be a few layers as it has been redone a couple times. Should I try sanding the whole blank down to the bare blank or just smooth out the deepest places?

I have a friend that wants me to build him a 9ft spinning rod like they use down in florida for king fishing. He wants it light enough to throw cigar minnows but with plenty of backbone. I have found a couple of salmon rods that look like it would work but not sure, any suggestions are appreciated.

I made a list of several blanks that will work and some are 6 ft which is why I was wondering about trimming the butt. If it was me I would be wanting a longer one but she has her eye on another custom rod and it is 5'6'' and she wants one similar to it. I would suggest 6 foot or more but ultimately it is her decision.

It is a saltwater blank, gonna be used for fishing off a pier with 50lb+ braid. Sorry, i should have mentioned that.

I am pretty sure I know the answer but I wanted to double check on here to make sure. I have a friend who wants a 5'6'' inch rod but most of the blanks that are heavy enough to do the job are mostly 6 ft. Cutting 6 inches off the butt of a 6 ft rod to make it work wont affect the action of most rods unless it is a slow action rod that flexes all the way to the reel seat, right?

I somehow took a small chunk of epoxy from over the thread wraps on a guide, it is roughly the size of a pinhead. Would it be better to take the coat of epoxy off the thread or just scuff it up and throw a new layer of epoxy over it. I have 1 coat of prokote on it now so the place isn't too deep and the epoxy is over a year old. Thanks, James

Nope didn't use adhesive. The rods the spots show up on are 2 Ugly Sticks(bought), an old Castaway(bought), a Cabelas Fish Eagle(guides replaced by me), and the rod that the blank turns grayish is an old old Kunnan. I redid that whole rod (handle and guides) and its just the blank that turns, the new epoxy over the guides stays fine. On the Ugly Sticks it is also the epoxy over the butt wraps tha

So how much should I sand down the old epoxy? Take it all off or just scuff it up enough for the new epoxy to adhere good?

When I rinse down my rods some of them will get white water spots on the epoxy covering the guides, while the oldest of the bunch the whole blank where it gets washed down will turn grayish white untill it dries out after a day or two. Is this a reaction with water and old epoxy or something else? Would putting a new coat of epoxy on the thread wraps solve this? Thanks

So I am looking at building an 8ft spinning rod. I will be using it for throwing 1 oz lures as far as possible (from a pier) and retreiving the lure with a jerking action, short quick jerks kinda like walking a dog under the surface. I'll be leaning over the railing with the tip of the rod facing down towards the water while retrieving the lure. I want the rod to be light enough to fish all day y
