If you use something like the Grizzly lathe with a drill, does it shorten the life span of the drill. Does the drill heat up or is there any additional wear and tear if you run it continuously while turning the grips?

Check out the Black Hole Slow Pitch blanks. You should be able to find what you need.

Does anyone have any feed back on using Winn grips? I like the way they look and am considering using them on my next rod. But I have heard a few guys mention that they do not like the way the grips feel, especially when it is hot and sunny.

Thanks for all the responses. I have about a half can of Meguiar's Carnauba Premium Paste Wax that I'm going to try.

I read somewhere that the final step some builders do after finishing a rod is to apply a good coating of car wax. How long should you let the epoxy cure before applying the wax?

Thanks to Paul who just happened to have the tip I needed. I just keep thinking what a great resource forums such as this are. I can't imagine what it must have been like 30 - 40 years ago trying to find odd or out of production parts and/or advice.

Paul, was going to send you a message but your email is hidden. If it is a 10/10, black frame with grey ring and you are willing to part with it send me an email with the cost with shipping and I will get back to you. Bob

What size font(s) do you use on most of your builds when ordering or making decals. I'm planning on ordering some decals and i want them to be readable but not so overly large that they are a distraction.

Ever since I learned the trick of using rubber cement to lubricate the blank I haven't had an issue sliding a grip on as long as it was in the ballpark..

I would like to see if I could make some up for myself, could you send me the information you found or the forum where you found the information. bobhummel@aol.com Thanks

I agree I put my spiral to the left on a right cranking reel. Seems easier for me to reach and control the line this way.

I bounce back and forth between Flex Coat and DII. I feel that Flex Coat might be just a bit easier to apply (mixing, evening out, etc.) but DII seems clearer and doesn't seem to yellow as quickly as flex coat. I agree with Phil and Donald, plus I believe their are a whole bunch of variables that effect ease of use and outcome that make every build just a little different..

Have you looked at any of the Japanese "Tenkara" style fishing rods available on line?. Sounds like they are rigged exactly as you mention. I think you can buy them in 1, 2, and 3 pieces or telescoping.

I just did a short butt wrap and when I put the second coat of epoxy on it I think I had the worst case of fish-eyes that I've ever had. As far as I know nothing changed from the way I normally apply finish. (I don't do many rods maybe 3-4 a year.) I used the same epoxy I used before, same thread, in the same area, same conditions, kept my hands and work area clean, etc. So this leads me to

Anyone use one of the Rod Dryer Clutches that are sold by Flexcoat, Mudhole and probably others? Do they have an actual clutch mechanism or does the rod just spin (slip) within the rubber cap that holds the rod butt when you stop the rod from spinning?

I have an American Tackle wrapping machine that I bought several years ago. I'm happy the way everything works except for one thing, the foot pedal control. To me it seems difficult to control the speed. It seems like there is a very small range between applying enough pressure to get it started moving and spinning way to fast. Has anyone else experienced this issue? I have not taken it ap

If you have a black x-wrap fore-grip with a smooth black metal winding check with thread work in front of it, where do you stop applying epoxy? on the thread just touching the beginning of the winding check? up onto the winding check covering it but not touching the x-wrap? Or all the way up on the winding check just touching the x-wrap? I've built thread ramps before at the end of the x-w

Does anyone know of a vendor that may still have some Gudebrod thread? I'm looking for HT Metallic Red # 9326 and Green #9358 size A.

Thanks, kind of what I figured with all the variables. I don't build many rods and have several partially used spools of Gudebrod that will probably just sit sit around if I order new thread.

Not including any butt/decorative wraps, is there any rule of thumb or formula to estimate the amount of thread (size a) needed to do guide wraps? I building myself a 9 foot calstar 900H with 10 guides (16, 12, 10 x 3, 8 x 5). I have several partially used spools of Gudebrod thread (differing colors to choose from) that I could use to wrap the guides. But I don't want to get near the end and f

I've put 3/4" EVA on 1" OD blanks with no problem since using the J Trekiles method using rubber cement. There is a you tube video that describes/demonstrates the method. I could not copy the link for some reason. Just search YouTube for " video using rubber cement to install rod grips." Works real slick (pun intended :) )

Jim, I have an excel spreadsheet that I got years ago that i use for all my guide spacing or at least an initial starting point. Very easy to use and works great. Since almost all the rods I build are for bottom fishing and i don't worry about casting distance. I believe it works a little different than yours. If you are interested send me an e-mail.
