I hit the wrong computer key whenever I ordered a blank for an 8" flipping casting rod for a customer. I now have a 2nd blank. I am considering using this blank for a sp[inning rod for myself. My hands won't let me use a casting rod anymore. The blank is 8-ft long-heavy power-fast tip. will this blank make a decent spinning rod for worms, etc. It will be used sometimes for throwing 5/8-

I have been asked to build an ultralight spinning rod with a foam core handle. I find much info on shimming a reel seat but nothing for shimming a handle The foam handle blank has a .3/8' hole and is 10 3/4 " butt to reel seat the rod bland is .26" diameter at the butt. I have built several rods with foam core/graphite handles for this client & am building a casting rod for h

I see all kinds of info about installing tape arbors (several types of tape) on rod reel seats, but have seen very little about gluing a factory arbor inside the reel seat in split grip seats. Question 1: is there any difference in strength of factory made arbors made from polyurethane or graphite: Question 2: is an arbor made from from tape any better than the arbor being installed inside

Why do most rod builders use Fuji guides? I have very seldom; if ever; seen comments about using American Tackle guides. For my personal use, I have always felt that Fuji guides were overpriced. on rod tops for myself & for others I have used nothing but the Nanolite ring. So far I have not had any complaints.

My rod building is hit-miss, & I may go several months between a build. Added to my problem; our house does not have central heat or air conditioning and it can get down into the 40° range in my rod building room. Bottom line, I often have trouble with one bottle of the epoxy mix “setting up” where it will not pour or flow enough to pull it into a measuring syringe. So far I have managed t

Has anyone out there tried spiral wrapping American Tackle Microwave casting guides on a casting rod. I am currently making a new 7-ft. casting rod for a family member I thought about trying it. I have spiral wrapped several rods with conventional guides & have installed microwave guides on a couple of rods but have never tried both on the same rod. I may try the spiral wrap unless I r

Thanks for the info. I did some reaming and achieved a good seat-2-rod fit at 11 5/8 inches. I stopped there. This seat has a palm swell & cannot be installed in the up-lock position; at least I could not figure out how to do it. I will purchase a locking-not to keep the reel tight in the down-lock position.

I bought an Aero size 17 spinning reel seat for a 7½ ft. med action light saltwater blank (L905-MHX-CG). The blank is 19mm at the butt. This is the heaviest rod I have ever attempted. Whenever I put the Aero reel seat without any arbor on the blank it is a snug fit whenever the back of the reel seat is at 12½ in. from the butt. As far as I know, Aero does not make a size 18 seat. This gives

I am building a 7' casting rod with a two piece reel seat. I am not sure if the reel will be low profile or round. The person I am building the rod for will not select the reel until she has tried several reels from her husbands inventory. What should the spacing be between the face of the rear trigger piece and the threaded barrel? I will leave the barrel full length on this build. Wi

I received 2 e-mails today, Feb 9, 2018, stating " Your Riley Rods order from May 1, 2017 is complete". I do not remember when Riley Rods went out of business and I had to start getting my foam core / graphite handle supplies from another source. I will not open these e-mails because they may contain a "bomb". If anyone else received something like t his, please let me kno

I am building my great-grand daughters personalized rods on MHX 4'6", FG, 2pc. Crappie, 2-6lb blanks. Girls' ages are 6 and 9. Rods will be used primarily for stocker rainbow trout in high lakes in Colorado. I normally would have used a 5" or 5'6" blanks for this application, but Mudhole had a great price on these blanks. I probably did not search enough on the forum, but I d

thanks Spenser & Phil I will resume wrapping - the size 10 & 7 are already tied on Dennis - the black flies are a non-issue in the Smokies (I do not think). I do not fly fish any place I cannot sit. My running gear went out several years ago. Rex

I have tried to track down all previous ideas for closed loop guides. Nothing has proven to give me an answer I can "take-to-the-bank" I DO NOT HAVE A FLY REEL OR LINE AT MY PRESENT LOCATION!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It seems to me as if Riley Rods has flown the coop under less than desirable circumstances. I regret this because I have made handles for several rods and am needing more supplies for other awaiting orders. Can anyone on this forum tell me where I can obtain the the basic materials (cores / resin / graphite sleeving) to resume my efforts. Thanks a million.

I have committed to building a fly rod for @#$%& to raise money for a local conservation organization. I have learned much about this organization & they do what they say. I consulted a very experienced local fly fisherman for rod recommendations. He also builds & repairs fly rods. my idea is to use a Rodgeeks red/white/blue blank fitted with a red/white/blue foam core/graphite ful

I have read the banter back & forth concerning single & double foot fly guides. Specifically, can single foot guides work successfully on a 9'-12 wt saltwater fly rod if each guide is locked in place? I am considering turning the fly rod handle from EVA (for a better wet-hand grip) -full wells configuration with a 5-inch over-reach for fighting large fish. The over-reach should loo

I am recovering from shoulder surgery & spent numerous hours brousing through supplier web sites. I ran across EVA handles that have colored diagonal stripes in them. This can make it easier to have a non-traditional looking grip when time if of a concern in building a custom rod. I failed to record the name of the supplier. Can anyone tell me where to obtain these grips.
