the way i see it, there are two different types of profit in the rod building business.
1. you are a custom rod builder and you build every rod yourself. this may put a little cash in your pocket, but there's no way you're going to bring in the motherload. you may charge 300% over costs, but the fact is one person can only build so many rods in a day.
2. you design a rod and hire a ma

hard to beat aftco bigfoot rollers. years of proven durability. i will admit the stuart guides look pretty cool, but i have no clue as to their reliability.
that being said i do not have one trolling rod on our boat with anything but roller guides. my belief is that i'd rather be over prepared than under prepared. that's why we pull big 80w reels even if we are not billfishing. never kn

no im not the owner, and i'm sorry if it looked like i was plugging them. phoenix makes most of the shirts for NHRA race teams and that's how i know of them. i posted a link to their site because that's the only company i'm aware of that does that sort of work.

It's amazing what wearing a fancy shirt at a marina or tournament can do.

i never ask for money, nor do i allow my friends to give me any.
1) if i were inviting a friend over to my house for a bbq, i would'nt ask for him to share the costs of the food. a guest on my boat is no different than a guest in my house.
2) the fishing trip doesnt become more expensive when my friend comes on board. if he werent there i would still have to fill the boat up with fuel.

in box "B" of this form, do we (sole proprietors) use the code 114110? that code is labeled as "fishing" but i dont know if it is for charter captains or what not.
thanks

i doubt those tiny thread gaps have anything to do with the rods ability to catch fish. i've seen some "custom" rods i wouldnt sell to a blind man.

i use pc-11 to glue offshore blanks into the ferrules. some of the strongest stuff i've ever seen, but a pain in the butt to mix.

i'll go a step further.......if your finish will not "set up" without using syringes to measure, then it's time to switch brands. i've never had one rod with tacky finish since ive been building and i dont use syringes at all.
question:
i'm considering getting a mixing machine because there's better things i could be doing than stirring for 3 minutes. how long does it take, lets s

here's an example. at 85 degrees my threadmaster is hard in under 4 hours (sometimes 3). drop down to 70-75 degrees and that time increases to about 7.

when i designed my line of rods i purchased all the blanks FIRST, then measured where the seats would fit with calipers, THEN ordered the reel seats. now i know that every time i order an 844 of Brand X, i will need a reel seat of this ID.
the manufacturer can measure the blank for you, but they can only guess where you will want to position your reel seat. you won't know either until you pu

bob,
the manufacturer will give you the tip size of a blank, but know that blanks are never going to be EXACTLY the same. for example, the 844 i use calls for a 5.5 tip size, but when i order, let's say 20 of them, i'll have to use 5.0, 5.5, or 6.0 on the same exact model of blank. the way to combat this is to have an assortment of tip tops instead of purchasing them "per order"

all of these college themed rods sound nice. i'm sure they'll hold up to your average sized fish, but they'll break under the pressure of a real opponent.
come play in the SEC.

yes i was waiting for the carbon skinned foam core to get brought up. let me clarify: someday there will be an option to foam and cork that will be just as easy to shape and install. carbon skin looks great, but talk about a time consuming process. it takes me all of 3 minutes to install an EVA grip, and another 2 to shape it.
