Thanks Tom, I think cutting a couple gaps in the cork tape (and removing them) to allow the epoxy direct contact between the reel seat and the rod blank is the best bet.
Mark, my appology. I know I didn't describe the rod sufficently as I was hoping my question was clear without the information. But my blank is a 7'6" United Composite and will be used as a 30-40 pound rod to cast jigs t

Greetigns fellow rod builders,
I am looking for suggestions on a rod building project. I am starting to build a new medium weight ocean casting rod and am trying something different. Instead of hypalon or EVA foam rod grips, I have wrapped the lower 20 inches of the rod blank with cork tape (once going up, once going down the blank). The tape is being held to the blank with the adhesive on t

Thanks guys. Some good advise here. I'll contact you Ben on the specifics for the model I should aquire. If these handle GT their more than capableof handling the wahoo and yellow tail I catch.
Thanks,
John

A freiend stopped over last night and said he'd seen American Tackle Company's Bushido Super Composite blanks used for this purpose. I'll look in to those.
Thanks,

I'm looking for some blank recomendations for an upcoming project. I'm looking for a 2 piece, 8 or 9 ft blank. I'll wrap this as a spinning rod and use it for yellow tail and wahoo fishing off Mexico. Probably fish 60 pound braid with a 30 or 40 pound top shot on a Shimano Spheros (18000).
The action I am looking for can be found on some Japan-made "shore jigging" r

Greetings,
Do folks typically use rod finish on top of a vinyl winding check, or leave it un finished? I will have the check epoxied up against a hypalon foregrip, and I'll be wrapping decorative thread right up to the check. None of my personal rods have a check for a reference.
Thanks for answering a kind of stupid question!

For reasons that aren't really that interesting, I need to remove the first roller guide which I just added to a rod that I just finished wrapping. I've got one underwrap of thread, one over wrap of thread, and three coats of High Build rod finish that just finished curing yesterday. What is the best technique? Is there a safe solvent that I can use on the blank to disolve the fi

My bigger stand up tuna rods use 12 iniches on the butt as you suggested.
But when I placed this blank in my day belt (which doesn't hang down to my thighs like the harness), my best arm placement for the reel and support on the fore grip suggests a shorter butt grip(10 inch).

Thanks James. I did what you suggested, and put on the day belt. Looks like a 10 inch bottom and a 12 inc top will work.

Thanks for the comments so far. I probably need to provide a bit more explanation of my planned use for this rod. James and Mike are absolutely correct that sizing a big stand up rod requires an appropriate fit to the harness that will be used. That's what I did when I made my larger stand up rods like a Calstar 755H and 755XH.
I am thinking of this rod as a kind of "transition rod&quo

I am trying to locate some demensions and suggestions for the bottom and top grips on a rod I plan on building. It will be on a Calstar GF765L. I will be using an Avet HX (2 speed) with a top shot of probably 50 or 60# mono. I plan on primarily casting live bait to moderate sized YFT and a few wahoo. It might double and throw the occasional jig or bomb for 'hoo.
I don't fish the

More good things to think about......
I was hoping to cast or at least "toss" live bait with this rod, and I had never considered the extra challenge of rollers and slack like, compared to traditional guides. GOod point.
Also good observation that a light stand up rod gets a solid bend, and when I fight a good fish, the top guide (be it roller or traditional) is almost always poin

Thanks all, for clarifying the terms "action" and "power". I use those terms casually and there is more to the meaning than I often intend. I'm favoring taking the material off the butt.
Great advise and experience as usual.
Cheers,

Thanks Stan, I"ve never used All America Roller Guides before. I used Aftco on the roller rod last year. I'll check out the All America line. I kind of agree, probably wouldn't need them for halibut. This rod will be used mostly for schooling YFT and maybe some big yellow tails on my 10 Day trip out of SD this November.
By the way, I had lunch with Litch last week. He's doing well. And

Just read the posting(s) on SenorTuna. I definately will go all rollers. Thanks for the reference, Billy. Confirmed what the other postings on this site were saying.

I have a 6 foot blank (GF760L), that for several reasons not relevent to this question, I need to shorten to about 5' 8". I don't understand how the action would be changes by the removal of the 4 inches from the "top" or from the "butt". Can someone help me understand what the difference in the action would be after I shorten the blank and how that will

Greetings,
I am getting ready to build a light stand up tuna rod (#50-60) on a GFL760L Calstar blank. Given that it will not be handling really huge loads, I was thinking of using a "roller top", but conventional casting/boat guides on the rest of the rod.
What do you guys think about this approach?
Would adding one additional roller guide - a "roller stripper" gu

Gerat detailed answer, Mark. I knew I asked the question to the right folks (and bought the X-Flock from the right supplier, as you'll recognize my name from your customer list!). I think the epoxy ramp will be the trick in the front of the grip. I like the idea of power sanding a bit of taper at the rear of the grip to bring it down in diameter so the edge of the X-Flock hood gets pulled under

Greetings fellow rod builders -
Have any of you folks used the X-flock heat shrink covering for rod handles? Looks cool and will be nice to cover some hypalon foregrips that have gotten beat along the boat rails.
So I ordered the correct size (it shrinks about 40% in diameter), and they claim it doesn't shrink in length (really?) Does this stuff really not shrink in length? But now I want
