If it is stuck from river silt or minerals and it was my rod I would try a soak of Marvel Mystery Oil for a couple of days. It works on everything else that has been locked up from corrosion. Larry

Yes, it is a thread tensioner but the spring on the side holds tension on the thread going to the rod when backing up.

I have been using a tensioner like these for years. Unlike a spring rod you don't even know it's there. Larry

All the posts from left hand craftsmen etc. why hasn't anyone noticed that it is a left mounted motor/chuck wrapper in a reversed photo. Check out the monitors and the location of the wing nuts on the rod supports.

I started having some unexplained issues with finish a while back. I use tape to hold my tie off loop for trim bands and was having trouble with the finish at the trim band. The tape I was using is the "new" 3M blue tape numbers 2093, 2011 and 2080EL. The old blue 3M blue with the rough back is non-existent in stores in my part of the country. The new tape leaves a grease like residue

I lived in Alaska until my wifes medical condition had us move back to the lower 48. I used USPS exclusively for all my blanks and building supplies while I was there. USPS rates are the same to ship from the lower 48 to Alaska as they are to ship across town. I never understood why shippers always add a Alaska or Hawaii surcharge for shipping when the freight is the same. All Priority Mail ar

Turn on the digital scale, set a small flower vase on the scale, tare the display to zero and insert the rod or pieces into the vase. Now you have the weight of the blank or rod.

Has anyone considered use the Micro Wave casting guide set in a spiral configuration. It looks to me like the butt guide would be a solution to the reel line side stacking problem. Would like an opinion before I order a couple sets.

John, thanks for the tip on the tip, I'll check the coil location. Those ALCOR rods and reels resemble the reels that my Dad made years ago back in the 1950's. He was a machinist and made large reels that were ten and twelve inch diameter from aluminum. They mounted on the rod in a conventional manner and were a real bear to keep in an upright position. The reason for the reel on top was beca

We do pretty much the same except we use 10 to 16 ounce weights depending on the depth. The bottom here is rocky with areas of sand between the ridges of rocks which are very steep. If you can bouce your weight off the rocks and into the sand ( without hanging up) where the fish lay and eat you are almost always going to get bit. Mostly fish with live minnows. Depending on the time of the year they are 100' to 300'. Sometimes during the spring they will come into the shallow water (30' to 50') but not often. We have fished for them some days when they have marked at 400'.

Yes, the rods are used for deep trolling for Macks sitting on the bottom. I ordered a couple of each suggestion. See which we like the best. Thanks for the help.

Does anyone know of a roller tip that can be used with a spiral wrapped rod? The reason for the roller is the radius more than the roller. Trolling four hundred to five hundred feet of wire line with 16oz. weight tends to put a bend in the wire where it rests in the tip. On my conventional wrapped rods with a roller tip the bend does not form. Any ideas?

Alex, Thanks, I should have said before that the rod is going to be used 99% for backtrolling and will seldom be cast. The reason I want a hook keeper is to keep from using a guide or the reel. When going back to the top of the run it is sometimes difficult to keep track of flying lures when operating the boat. The reason I suggested the butt guide location is because the rod can stay in the rod

Doe's anyone see a problem with wrapping a small folding hook keeper to the bottom of a double foot guide wrap. It would be on the butt guide and use the same wrap for the guide and hook keeper. Thanks for your thoughts, Larry

While fishing early this spring my fishing partner left his rod laying over the heater in my driftboat. It wasn't touching the heater but when he picked it up the tip was like a piece of cooked spagetti, really limber. We thought ruined rod but yesterday he brought it over to cut off the four inches from the tip and install a new tip. Just for the heck of it I heated the tip with a heat gun unti

Jason, I have been using Garcia Record series reel for two years with no problems. I bought a Revo Toro 60 to use for salmon on the Kenai River , where I live, and so far it has landed two 40# plus kings and one that was 53 inches long that had to be released due to the June slot limit. Fish was between 60 and 65 pounds. Reel was the smoothest that I have used so far. I have since ordered anothe

Mr. Balcombe, I have eight Hot Shot and Back Bounce rods that are used by myself and my friends. They are kept as clean as possible during fishing and cleaned thoughly after EVERY trip, which in the summer is every day. I just wanted a suggestion for a cleaner, not a smart remark on how to take care of my equipment. Brian, Thanks for Oxi-Clean idea. I went out and bought some and I thin

Does anyone have a product that will remove stains caused from cured salmon roe on rod blanks? I have rods built from Loomis shiney blanks and Rogue River matt finish blanks. I have tried carnuba wax and Pledge for protection but neither stands up to the acids in the cure. I have tried alcohol, vinegar and ammonia mix and all window cleaners but nothing seems to cut the stains. Strange thing is t
