I have three century blanks (SS1145, SS1267, SS1449) that I want to build out but need a little guidance. The purpose will be primarily for bait fishing from the surf with some lure casting with the 9 1/2 and 10 1/2 rods. All will be built as spinners. It’s been about 8 years since I’ve built any rods and wanted to know if anyone has a guide/ layout starting point for these blanks?

Couple of questions. When will you get the specs up for the surf rods? Will your specs include NGC specs as well as the standard COF specs?

If you are familiar with the Dan's FT, it sounds like the Sig V would fit the bill perfectly. I've built a 9'6" 6wt and the action seems to be exactly what you have described. Very simple rod to cast but has enough power for nice long casts.

In terms of surf casting the amount of weight does not limit you to baitcasters only. With the use of finger guards to protect your finger that eliminates slicing your finger off but still does allow for spool slippage. With the use of a breakaway cannon you eliminate both issues. I personally use both types of setups for surf casting (up to 10 oz.) and can't really tell a difference in distan

Pete, I think if you call most any of the suppliers down the left you will find that they are extrememly helpful and will work with you to put together a "kit" of the stuff you will need. I've also found that of the suppliers I have worked with, that they don't tend to try and throw extra non-neccessary things in when they are not needed. Pretty stand up group overall. My best experi

I've been strugling to get a 9 1/2 ft surf rod setup with an NGC layout and I called up Custom tackle to order more guides hoping I could finally find the guide sizes I needed to resolve the line slap issues i was running into. Well, instead of selling me more guides Bob took about 30 minutes out of his extremely busy day to talk to me about the problems i was having and, with the guides I alrea

Thanks Tom. I guess I will have to go back to a size 40 guide size then since the previous setup had no line slap at all and i'm really struggling to get an NGC setup together that eliminates it and gets the distance for the rod at least within ten yards of the previous setup.

The rod is an older breakaway 1145 rated to 4 oz. I'm using the rod for light bottom fishing duties primarily and for throwing sting silvers. i use this rod at hatteras and at holden beach which is a fairly flat beach requiring a long cast to reach any fish so the casting I'm doing is for distance with 2 - 4 oz. The reasons for the shock leader are due to the distance casting and also because

thanks for the input guys. The size 30 guide i tried as close as 17 inches from the spool face to as far away as 38 inches and in every location that i setup the guide I had line slap during the cast, not during the retreive. the shock leader was making the most noise, not surprising given how stiff that is but the fireline was hitting the blank as well. when looking at the line as it was comi

I've been trying over the past couple of days to setup a 9 1/2 ft surf rod (rated 1 - 3 oz) with the new guide concept and I'm having some trouble eliminating the line slap on the blank. The reel I'm using is a shimano 4000 stradic with a 20lb flouro shock leader and 15 lb fire line. I started off the setup with svsg guides size 25 and 16 and then got to a choker and running guides of size 8.

I'm located in Charlotte and will definitely be at the show in February and will be bringing 4 other first time builders with me. they all want to build fly rods so I figured the best place for them to pick out their blanks and components would be the show. wouldn't miss the show for anything. I would love the opportunity to actually come by and check out your shop and get some pointers on set

ok, thanks for the additional info Billy and the level setting Tom. i will get guides to try out both setups to see which way works best for the rod I've got and my casting style (re. lack of technique). should be a fun day (or two) test casting all the different setups.

Billy, I had some questions about the results of your test casting that you put up on Stripersonline. in the results it showed that the Concept setup was the shortest casting setup and the lowrider setup was the longest casting setup for spinning rods. I was wondering if I was actually reading the results correctly and if so, how is the low rider setup done? is it the same type of concept setu

Sure wish those meetings were in NC. would have loved to have been there for the surf spinning rod guide placement discussion. Exactly what I need right now trying to get this 9 1/2 ft rod setup correctly.

I have a 9 1/2 ft surf rod (rated 1 - 4 oz) that I have been using for light bait fishing and for casting heavier metal lures. What I want to do is strip the rod and rebuild it as light as possible. My thought was to use LVSG guides but I wasn't sure if they would hold up to casting 3 oz +bait. Also, I thought this might be a perfect rod to try out the concept setup and if so would it be an op

How does this CP work with black thread? I've heard that other CPs will sometimes leave a white residue and I've got a decorative wrap that is in process that will have some black in it that I want to avoid having white blotches all over.

I'm trying to do my first wrap and I'm trying to do a transition from black to charcoal to burgundy to red. I've got a good transition from the burgundy to the red but I can't seem to figure out what would be a good transition color from charcoal to burgundy??? Any ideas?

Well, one thing is for sure. I certainly have a much greater appreciation for what I've seen others accomplish with their thread wraps. This takes FOREVER! I've put about 15 hours in and I've only gotten my first 6 passes on. I was hoping to use this rod on a trip I have scheduled in May but now I'm not sure I'll be done.

Thanks Tom. Now that I have a couple more passes things are starting to snug up a little easier. I will try the two thread wrap but I'm not sure my fat little fingers can do it with out themn crossing over each other.

I think I may have figured out one thing that I was doing wrong. I wrapped all of my threads to the right and then all of the return threads instead of alternating. I've been alternating on the last two passes and things seem to be snugging up much better. Ellis, I don't think that I'm getting the threads too tight since I am wrapping single strands with my hands but I will try and adjust t

I'm just starting a closed wrap and I am having some problems keeping the thread packed. i've only got about 4 passes on the rod but it doesn't seem to want to pack very well. Will it start to pack better when I have put more passes on it?

Thanks guys. I really do like that look and might have to go the route that Herb has suggested. Another question I have. Struble seems to send a cork ring for their up-locking reel seats, will any precut cork handle be able to accept the struble seat or will I need to use the supplied ring?

I picked up a Dan Craft Sig V 6wt at the show this weekend and I am looking for a specific type of grip for the rod but have had no luck. I have seen posts where people have used the rubberized cork rings for the first and last ring and was wondering if there were any vendors that sold that type of grip premade? I don't have the tools to make my own grips unfortunately so I'm hoping that someon

Billy it was great meeting you at the show this year. Thanks for convincing me to try out the fish scale wrap and walking me through it with the visual wrap software. After reading your book most things are fairly clear but I still have a few questions I was hoping you could help out with. These are probably pretty dumb but this is my first attempt. 1. Do you have to have the foregrip on th
