After a lot of work I finally finished my Sage Z-Axis Spey Conversion.
I think this is my best work to date and I'm very happy with the finished product.
I'm looking forward to torquing on some big Alaskan Bows with it this September.

3. Latest work
This is the seat I made for my next project, a Sage Z-Axis 7136-4 Spey Conversion. Seat skeleton is Struble and the insert is stabilized and dyed spalted big leaf maple burl with a CA finish. I will be making matching butt cap, winding check and handle accents as well.

This is my first real attempt at using CA to finish some of my woodwork. It is a cocobolo winding check and butt cap I built for a friend. The black rubber part of the butt cap is made from a hockey puck. :)
The hardware is going on a new 13' 3 pce Batson XST float blank he is having built. I'm quite happy with the outcome and am working on something similar for a spey conversion for myself.

This handle is going on a Shikari ISJ590 Jig Stick. It is made from stabilized Madrone Burl & Cottonwood Bark I collected off a downed tree in South Central Alaska in the fall.

I finally finished my entry into Billy's latest challenge.
I'm pretty happy with the outcome, as this is only my third build. I'm looking forward to trying it out later in the week.

While far from perfect I'm quite happy with the outcome.I didn't notice the gaps in the butt wind until I applied the finish, hopefully my new visor from Acid Rod will prevent this in the future. The wrap is a shaded spider from Billy's book and the handle is Andy's exotic cork with a King Wood reel seat and butt cap.

This is my first attempt at building a custom handle. Custom butt cap & seat made of Kingwood. Handle is made of various exotic cork with natural cork trim rings on either side of checkers.

My first attempt at some custom handle work. Andy's exotic cork & home turned kingwood reel seat & matching butt cap. I put several coats of TRU oil on the handle. I still have to finish the wood.

I made this lathe out of a couple of first generation Makita cordless drills (the kind without replaceable batteries). It was originally designed for turning floats for steelhead fishing. I have just finished rebuilding it with a longer bed to turn cork. The dirll was originally powered by 7.2 volt nicad batteries, but is now powered by a 12 volt power supply. There are also a pair of 12 volt fan

This is my second entry into Billy's challenge. There are some more firsts for me in this one,(fly grip, pin inlay & thread trim) I'm waiting on an Alps tich/gold Triangle seat to finish it out. This grip will be installed on a Rainshadow 10 1/2' 7wt for steelhead.

18. Still Practicing
Must say this thread thing is addictive. Can't wait for Billy's book to arrive, so I can learn how to really do this. LOL

19. First Weave
This is my first attempt at weaving. Well not really, this is actually the fourth :-) The first two were a total disaster. I was using white for the pattern & found it nearly impossible to pick out against the loom. The third was much better & this one I think is actually passable. Too bad it's on a 1/2" dowel.

Here is a modification you can make to a hole saw to cut bark and other fragile items.
Start by removing the drill & grinding the teeth off. Next grind the edge in the shapee of a chisel. Reinstall the drill chuck it up and start cutting your bark, fragile trim rings etc. Another modification that can also be made is to make the slots in the sides of the saw larger to aid in removing the

My first attempt at a diamod wrap. Not an awfull first try but I need much more practice. The spacing is a little off, some minor gapping that could probably worked out & the patter alignment needs some work. But I did learn alot about how the thred reacts & the amount of work involved.

22. Another try
My second cross wrap attempt turned out much better. Eac time I learn something new. This time I learned that before you try to do the finnish wraps CP the cross wrap first!! Or the whole pattern trys to shift due to the tension on the thread. :-)

24. First Rod Build
This is the result of my first build. The rod is a 7 piece 8' 3/4 wt fly blank tied as an ultra light spinng rod.

Close up of the handle on my first rod build. The handle is a St.Croix that has had all three sections shortened. The fore & rear grips were shortened due to the length of the butt section (7 piece rod) & the center of the skeleton seat was shortened 1/2" to acomadate the reel to be used.

28. Fear No Fish
My first attempt at creating a weave pattern. There are a couple of spots that need fixing in the pattern but overall I'm pretty happy with the outcome. The pattern is 46X75 using A&B thread it measures 18mm in length.

I tried to order from them once and the website wouldn't let me so I sent them an email to order and never got a response.
Won't waste the time trying again. :(
