Assuming that cork rings are stored dry in about 70 degree temp in a dark drawer, how long would the rings last before they 'go bad' and are not useful for building? I have some fantastic decades old cork rings and they still seem to be brand new perfect....so I got to wondering. Thank you.

Which reminds me that I still have a bunch of Minima guides... Need to go dig them up.

Do you do it 'on site' at your business? Can we send our own Fuji guides to you? And you remove and reinstall the rings without actually weakening them? Thanks

I talked to a gentleman today who has a Seeker Rod ultralight blank. I did not know that they made UL blanks as it is not on their site, as far as I can tell. Apparently, Seeker purchased some structures from Gary Loomis which included some of the mandrels and other blank manufacturing equipment. Does anyone else know about this? Curious.

Bravo. Well done - coming late to this topic of course. But really, that's quite a bit of effort. LOL!

Thanks Russell. Not surprised that the 2 power will be more crisp than the 1 power. However, that's rated 4-8lbs while we use 2 lbs test. Interestingly, 741 is of higher modulus carbon fiber than the 702. If the 702 weight at 1.3 oz, that seems heavy for blank of that length and power. Unfortunately they do not list weight for the 741. Thanks!

I did a search here on all dates and found nothing so I hope that this is not a redundant query. Has any here handled or built on the Northfork FS 741-2? I'd love to hear your thoughts, perhaps compared to other blanks too. Also, I'd love to have the weight if any have the bare blank in hand. Thanks!

Darrin, Thanks! you mean the entire item as pictured - the bodies and the screw nut? If so, that is incredibly lightweight. Bravo. Can you please confirm? Also, are you planning on spinning as that should be even lighter? And what $ for these? Love to test one out. Thanks.

Thanks all for the replies. Mark, I just tape the reels instead of slip rings. :)

I am looking at getting some carbon fiber tubing to try out for tennessee handle for ultralight rods. I am thinking of 23mm diameter and can get the wall thickness in either 0.5mm or 1.0mm. This is for ultralight using 2-4 lbs test so I don't anticipate high stress. Can you get by with 0.5mm or would 1mm be necessary? Thanks in advance for any insight.

Good thread Aaron. Good comments all around here. Four quick comments: 1. I don't see BFS becoming the dominant UL rig for wide-open waters as the spinning reel is easier to learn. BFS takes effort to master. 2. BFS started out on the expensive end of the hobby. However, manufacturers have started to drive the price down. China's manufacturers have been getting better and currently,

I assume that you are using 2-4 lbs mono/fluoro, or sub 8 lbs braid, correct? For what its worth, Japan's top end UL rods use size 3.5 or 3.0 Fuji running guides. That's all I use too. And the largest butt guide is 16. Some even use 12.

Ben, not sure if I can link youtube videos here. here's an example. Casting starts at 3:30. He gets into impossibly tight places UNDER branches that I cannot regularly do with my spinning rig. It is likely that I don't have the same skill as some but this is an example of why small stream fisherman like BFS.

Roger, may I know what you don't like about it - was there a performance negative of some kind, or is it just pure preference such as visual or that you don't like the line twisting around? I can use fewer guides with spiral...for starters. This is a moderate UL. Ben, regarding BFS - I hear you. But want to try it. I know of guys who do it and just love the feel. They feel more connected

Thanks Joe for the extensive insight. I'll take that into account. I'll actually test that low size 5 as the butt guide and do a static text to see if the line does not rub. The opening at the rell is very small - smaller than 5. Ben - why not? Spiral just always made sense to me given that it does not reduce casting distance. Spiral orients the rod naturally when under load while traditi

Thank you everyone - Tom for your note on the right height. I've not thought about that. Kendall for your confirmation. I'll be using Fuji Ti Torzites BFS set. Their butt guides is the T-RVTG6 - so that is a size 6 Torzite. Granted, Torzites are very thin compared to the Fuji SIC so it is more like a size 7 SIC. Interestingly, I am building on the same blank as a factory completed rod an

Thanks Roger. I see. So the distance from reel to 1st guide is not as critical as with a spinning outfit. As to 2nd and 3rd, I was planning to use size Fujis. That's the smallest they make I think. ********************** David, for some reason, did not see your reply. Maybe we posted simultaneously. Thanks for your observation. That actually does make sense - in the sense that e

I'm 99% spinning so that's basically all I've ever built. So I apologize in advance if this question is too basic for those of you baitcasting rod pros. Been intending to build a BFS (bait finesse system) rod at about 5 1/2 feet long, and UL in power using a spiral (acid) wrap. I'm curious about the distance of the butt (1st) guide to the reel. Since the line is already going through a

I have not actually used the foam arbors before. I have one from many many years ago when the first articles about carbon sheathed over foam arbors came out on Rodmaker. I never used it becaus

Just revisiting this thread for the first time. Thanks to all who replied. Appreciated. Terry Kirk, what you do with arbors at front and rear is similar to my idea. Reasons for not thinking of foam are: 1. Foam inside diameter are all too big for what I need. I want no larger than 5mm ID. 2. I suspect that foam would not be as sensitive in transmitting vibration as a stiff piece of

As an admitted weight weenie, I am looking for some arbors that are (as the title states): rigid, light, and thin. The outer diameter needs to be at least .55 inch or 14mm. The inner diameter, the smaller the better. Even a solid disc would be better as I can drill it myself. Some of the blanks I have is 4mm or so and no arbor I have found has a hold that small. I suppose that I can ge

I've always been curious about this - the experience that a rod will not load properly. I guess I don't understand because I have yet to find a single UL BLANK without any guides or line or lure that will not load properly when I test 'cast' with it. Basically one can WHIP any UL blank so quickly that it will load and release even before building. So I never thought that a UL blank won't load

So why the love for fiberglass blanks in some circles? Why not just make carbon fiber that weighs and recovers more slowly?
