I’m not very good at finishing decals. Struggle getting them on without creases, have had them lift on the edges, and put too much epoxy on them. I wrap em around a sharpie with a rubber band for a few days and use as little epoxy as possible now. What frustrates me sometimes is there are voids that won’t fill in regardless of how much epoxy I put on them. Must have a contaminant on the blank

I’ve put marbling pigment into my epoxy. It gives it a swirled bowling ball kinda a look. When I should’ve used CP and my thread color washes out, I’ll add pigment to the epoxy to brighten it up. Fun to try some different strategies.

Thanks, Bob. Did lose power 3 hours into drying one night. Wasn’t pretty. The footballs are usually toward the rod tip. I will keep the leveling thought in mind. Thanks

Thanks, Bob. The wraps aren’t huge footballs. Are they really a problem or just an eye sore to really good rod builders? I’ve made about 13. Can see my flaws in the the first ones, but like to think I’m getting with each rod. Some times the fancier ones with marbling look cool. Other times the basic thread catches my just as much. Thanks for the input. Sam.

I apologize if this has been covered. I’m building a rod for a charity fundraiser for my son. I had a black blank with royal blue thread. Once the epoxy landed it got dark. I put some pretty good looking epoxy ramps with blue and a pinch of silver that I wanted to match. . I put a second coat of epoxy with blue and a little silver. It covered all my thread flaws. I must admit they were a

I must admit. I did not not do his guide placement justice. I just played it out in a quick and dirty description. I’m going to give it a try.

I’m sure this has been discussed. I stopped at a custom rod builder in my neck of the woods to buy a tip top and hook keeper, which I always forget to order. I brought a couple of rods to critique. I’ve only made 5 or 6. He said I was doing alright, but my spine was off on my baitcasting rod. Thought I paid close attention to the right spot. He then explained how I should’ve put the first 2 g

Thanks, never used Permagloss. Made my brother a rod with CF split grips. I left em raw. They look cool and seem to be light. With the variegated thread to you add any trim bands or not. Did a couple practice runs with the blue and silver trim band vs just blue. Hard to decide. Thanks , Sam

Happened to me. Not sure what I did wrong. Scraped it off. Rod got ugly. Put a fresh coat on. The final outcome still looked ok after a second coat. Not my best work.

I’ve got the blue. Going to make a basic rod. No trim bands with carbon fiber grips. I’m a pretty new at this. Gonna give it a shot. I’ve heard talk about putting epoxy on the CFB grips. Do you think it’s necessary?

Sorry if this is a duplicate. Bought a spool of this in a royal blue color. Looks cool on the blank. Anyone try this ? Thoughts or tips are appreciated. Sam

I think I’m going to keep them a bit more basic, too. They look a little less busy to me. It’s fun to try some of the ideas I see on YouTube. I can’t make em as slick as they do, but an interesting challenge.

I just started, too. Can’t get enough of it. Bought a couple kits from Mudhole and Rainshadow. The fancier I get with trim bands or dragon scale w/ dry wall tape, the more blemishes I notice. I can sit by the hot water heater behind the card table for hours. My best rod is a spinning reel with green thread and a cork split grip. Made my brother a jerk bait rod with carbon fiber split grips. T
