Ok, on a guide with two feet and three legs, does the two leg side face the reel or the tip top?
Why?
Does the guide orientation ever change? Say mid rod or for a different type of rod.
Thanks, Guy

Doesn't Voo Doos Marbeling Mud do that?
I've also heard of adding Flex Coat color preserver to the epoxy but I dont know if the brand of epoxy matters.

I appreciate the responses and the information given. At this time I will likely stick with the cork tape. Who has those foam cores? I know I've seen them somewhere but now I can't find them.

6. Cork Tape
Rather than use two layers of cork tape to build up or profile a grip, what is suggested to apply to the blank? Material needs to grip blank well, needs to provide a good substrate to the cork tape, and ideally needs to be thin enough that multiple layers may be used to create specific profiles.

I've heard quite a lot about that method. Always using a sharp razor blade and some care I haven't found it necessary.

10. Thread Ends
Does anyone give thought to wrap ends and beginnings or am I just being overly picky?
I have always taken steps to be sure the beginning and end of a wrap looks uniform, pleasing to the eye, and functional. Frequently these spots are the only areas that really stand out and I've felt they deserve a little extra attention, but I wonder if I'm just being overly picky. Things I watch out for:

Bob, as a cyclist, rod wrapper, and a shooter myself (currently inactive due to cancer complications) I look forward to additional information ragarding this build.

Take a look at this tool
It's for applying finish to arrow shafts. Looks similar to the Japanese tool. May be worth a look.

So, why is there such a huge variation in blank prices?
As far as I have gathered, blanks are all made the same way: material is cut in a particular shape, tacked on a mandrel, wrapped tightly about the mandrel, and "baked" to activate and set the glue in the material. Also taking place is wrapping the blank in thin plastic material, removing the plastic wrap and sanding the blank smo

I should know this or at least be able to find the information somewhere, but I'm coming up blank.
In reel seat sizes, what do the numbers refer to? 16, 18, 20... they don't seem to refer to ID or OD or length; is there a secret code?

I agree with Spencer. I use a metric steel rule to keep the same measurement off the guide foot but as the guides get smaller the over all length of the wrap gets smaller.

Some way to handle thread tension
Some way to support blank as you work

Mark, no offence taken. I consider your statement mostly true. I had a small business making and selling custom wood arrows for traditional archers, longbows and recurves. In fact, before I got a cresting lathe to turn the arrow shaft while paint was applied, I used my rod wrapping jig to do relatively simple thread art using metallic thread instead of paint.

When I teach Flemish bowstring making that's rhe way we end the center serving. I swear the students to secrecy to add a bit of humor to a somewat boring procedure.

Sabre is what I originally learned to wrap on back in the 70's. I still have two 196-7s, a 195-5, and I think a 670, an 870, and another that I don't remember the model of off the top of my head.
Yes, great rods. I wouldn't hesitate to use them now. BITD everyone I fished with used Sabres. They were the top selling rod at the little tackle shop I worked at.

My mistake. Although I built my first rod in the 70's I have obviously not kept abreast of all rod building techniques and methods. My apologies for thinking this application of these old things may be of interest.
I know coating the entire blank is widely discouraged here. I just thought it was an interesting process and result.

I'm in bed recovering from cancer treatment and tend to spend a lot of time on YouTube. I recently came across videos by Japanese custom rod builders and am fascinated about how they do many things differently than I am accustomed to.
Handles seem to be built on a graphite tube and then the tube is slid over the rod butt and epoxied.

I’ll second Rit dye. I’ve used powdered Rit mixed with denatured alcohol to dye plastic arrow nocks. First time I’ve outed that. I used to make custom wood arrows for traditional archers and it drove people nuts on how I had nocks in colors that were unavailable. Doesn’t work with all plastics so test first.

I know a lot of people find Amazon to be an evil big company bent on destroying our way of life. However, I see Amazon as a way to shop a bunch of companies and what they carry without leaving my home.
Following cancer treatment I am confined to bed, unable to leave my home. Amazon gives me the chance to get many things that I may normally not find easily.

I’m not clear if you’re looking for a pen to mark the blank for component locations or for writing information on the blank.

Well, finally heard back on one of my emails, 18 days after my original sending and only one of my two questions answered.
Apparently they are so overwhelmed with orders that it’s taken this long to respond.

Robert, if it was CTS I was trying to get ahold of I’d happily follow your advice. Unfortunately it was another board sponsor and a well known rod manufacturer who is not a board sponsor.
