I've been down this road several times, it's always about mixing equal parts. Even though on small projects i may only need a very small amount, the least i mix now is 10cc of each part and measure ever so closely.

I'll add my 2 cents.
Been using masking tape for over 40 years, I couldn't even begin to count how many rods I've made throughout the years, and not a single reel seat has broke loose, whether it be a Fly rod, an ultra-lit or countless saltwater rods. It Works
I think the key is a good top quality epoxy that is NOT a quick harden like 5 minute epoxy. The faster it hardens the more brittle it is

Tom, I saw the Minima Trichrome guides that looks like a good fit. Being unfamiliar with these guides I'm asking for guidance as to which sizes, the build is a 9ft 5wt crb blank

I'll agree with Spencer, i've used wellwood contact cement to join pieces then shaped them and had absolutely no problems at all. Although I didn't know there was an Hypolon adhesive out there.

10. fly guides
Over the years I must of built at least 50 fly rods. All my builds have been with snake guides. Working on another fly build and was thinking about the single foot guides. Hoping for some pro's and con's single foot vs snake's. My feeling is the single ft with an insert is going to add weight that would change the dynamics of the blanks action. Maybe i'm over thinking it, who knows. Input is welc

30 yrs ago i built a pair of spinning rods used for bait fishing with sawbellies in the local resirvoirs for trout. application was for rowboat fishing . i used 11ft 8wt fly blanks , when placed in rod holders my bait was about 23ft apart which helped keep the lines from tangling.Once others saw them i ended up making about a dozen sets of them.

I was thinking the 9 footer might be a little too long for her and our local streams.

16. 5wt fly rod
Good morning all, I have a friend who's wife wants to learn how to fly fish. She is totaly new to fishing but very interested in the fly fishing aspect of our sport. I build alot of fly rods for salmon and steelhead but not to smaller rods that would probably fit what she would need. Our area is mostly small streams with trout being in the stock size to 16 or 18 inches. I'm guessing a 5wt rod but

What is the best adhesive to use when laminating eva foam disks before turning them down and shaping. I want to make some custom grips by laminating some disks between sections of eva foam, and i don't want them seperating when sanding and shaping.

I personally prefer 10 ft , made up a couple 2pc 10ft fly rods for steelhead about 4 yrs ago, my 9 footers will probably never see sunlight again.

21. Fluke rod
Seeing how 99 percent of my builds are for fresh water, I'm looking for someone to point me in the right direction. A friend of mine wants a fluke jigging rod for Montauk area , he says he uses 20-40 lb test with heavier jigs, how heavy he didn't say. He has been using a Shimano Trevala jigging rod model TVSC-63MH , he want it at least 7FT long with a trigger reel seat. My problem with him is he

Roger, yes I insured it for the full price of the rod.
When I get this next one finished I'm delivering it by hand out in Ohio. Meeting up with him for some steelhead fishing.
People just don't care and the post office has been a nightmare this past year.

23. shipping damage
When you think you've taken the right steps to ship out a newly built rod, it arrives broken. Shipped a beautiful 13 1/2 ft float rod last week. Even went through the trouble finding 3 inch pvc pipe, bubble wrapped it, used pvc end caps, one end cemented on the other on with gorilla tape. Sent it through USPS , arrived on time. looks like someone used it as a crow bar or wrestled it out of a tigh

25. Rod Dryer
Well my 40yr old rod dryer just went belly up, locked up and wouldn't turn. Not sure what went wrong but it made no noise,
Time for a new one but not sure about the ones I see with the rubber cover with the hole in it. Wondering how others feel about what dryers work better than others. I have 3 different units, had 3, now 2, all have the cup with the 3 screws that hold the rod. The ones with t

I'd go with an #18 reel seat, rarely do I go to an #16, only on some lighter weight fly rods, but thats my opinion.

Not sure of the Gudebrod # , I started using it either in 79 or 80, If it's which I believe is #811 and the Epoxy Coating Co. made it, what's the chance of getting it from them.

Tom that I would believe with the water based cp's, but just like polyurethane the new water based poly's all dry with a cloudy finish. But not the oil based ones. Same goes for cp's, i'll take the old Gudebrod color preserver over the new water based ones any day of the week.

As far as a little dulling in the vibrance of the thread color is not acceptable . Just because I'm not doing weaves I don't want to settle for dulled out colors. I choose the thread colors to match the components on a build. Reel seat's , colored winding checks and matching butt caps. Once it's all wrapped everything matches beautifully, now cp the thread's and presto magic, looks like the wrong

I will agree with Norman on the RPM speeds. My first rod dryer was almost twice what i use now as far as rpm's . Couldn't understand why I was getting eggs, what you call footballs on almost all my guides. Switched to a much slower drying motor and lessened up the amount of flexcoat epoxy, problem solved.
