Hahaha. Rocket science indeed :P. All jokes aside I am very satisfied and grateful for the replies. I will probably try 1 inch at a time just to mess around with the feel. I'll probably put some sort of butt cap.

All awesome replies. I love rogers answer, haha. I was hoping some people could chime in about what it may do to the power, action, and lure weight rating?

Hello all you helpful folks, hope everyone is well.
I have an 12' Ugly stick conventional rod I use for shore fishing for White Sturgeon.
The rod is 12', conventional (bait caster rod and handle is about 27" from butt to bottom of reel seat insert), rated extra-heavy, 30-50lb mono, 6-12oz lure, and I believe it is moderate or moderate fast action.
I am thinking about cutting about 7 inc

4. Broken rod
I broke a 4 piece rod today. This is the 3rd section up from the butt.
The small broken piece is 5 1/4 inches long, and the male ferrule takes up 2 1/4 of that, leaving 3 inches of space for me to cut a old blank and stick it in with glue. I was wondering if 3 inches is long enough to keep strength and integrity? I have a old blank that fits well. TY
Also if it matters it's 11 feet long, fas

Rod turned out great just to follow up and if anyone ever searches for information on handle length. 10" casts just as far as everyone else on the beach but it's not quite as comfortable as 13". Once you adjust it is totally fine though. It's actually better in the river float fishing with the 10" handle - feels more comfortable than 13" that everyone else uses to float fish w

I just tested casting it in a field and it casts 1 oz incredibly far. I don't know how far exactly but far enough lol. I can absolutely feel the shorter handle but I don't want to say it feels bad.. it's just.. 3 inches shorter than what I am used to. My accuracy and distance felt fine. Retrieving felt fine. I'd say its 10% less comfortable during the cast since I am not used to it, and I believe

Definitely I will not use any glue until I am 100% sure and have tested it.
I have done some static testing and ended up with 13 guides. It is a very parabolic rod (which I wanted). I could probably take a guide or two less but I wouldn't mind a little bit of dampening. All double foot guides as well ending with size 7 rings and tip.
The rod does feel slightly off balance but that doesn't

Perfect! I will test it out with guides taped on. And I will definitely tie line through the guides and onto something solid to static test the blank in hand as well. Thanks so much for the responses guys!

10. Handle length
Hey. I am building a custom rod with some very specific traits in mind. This is a rod for Coho Salmon and casting lures.
I am worried about my handle length and casting distance with lures about half an oz to 1 oz.
It is a 4 piece fly rod 8 wt switch blank moderate action. It is 10 foot 8 inches long. I will be building it into a bait casting rod.
Here's the thing though. I ordered a 1

Not sure if you'll all be notified or not, but sorry it took so long to reply with how the rod went. Canada post was late by a few months with the delivery of the parts. I built it a spiral wrap and it turned out great for a 4 piece fly rod blank into a casting rod. It's a very fast action for a fly blank and it was perfect for the Coho season! A little on the lighter side but it landed a few chr

Heya :). I am building my 2nd ever rod and I realized a 15.5" cork was too long for my liking. So, I cut 2 inches off the son B. Beautiful work, I know :P (sarcasm). So I live in an apartment and have zero access to power tools or a lathe of any sorts. Digging around some forum posts I see a few people mention that you can use sand paper and shape the cork slowly by hand.
I was hoping so

I figured it out. It's a nice rod with the proper simple spiral method. Works pretty well. I think that performance wise it has it's ups and downs. I find that using it for a drift rod you can ever so slightly feel the line has tension as it goes through the bumper guide. This doesn't seem to affect casting distance or anything but you can definitely feel it a little bit here and there while free

Thanks for all the tips. I've never read the actual book instructions for the Simple spiral.. just what I've found on forums.
I ended up figuring it out for the most part by removing the size 12 double foot butt guide and replacing it with a size 10 double foot guide. I then redid my spacing with spacing my first 2 guides 9.5 inches apart, and placing a size 7 single foot micro guide in betwee

So I put a micro guide on the blank at 90 degrees between where the 1st and 2nd butt guides go and tested it (yes the micro guide is backwards, I'll turn it around once I take the line out lol)
Looks like a nice line path when the rod isn't flexed:
but as soon as I flex the rod deeply that bumper guide moves into an extreme position.. it moves closer to 180 degrees (under the rod) than

I corrected guide placement for the proper simple spiral (all normal guide placement with all guides besides the butt guide at 180 degrees) and havent added the bumper guide yet. When i flex the rod without a bumper guide im wondering if simple spiral would even work as when under load the line rubs thr blank very close to the butt guide. By me placing a 90 degree bumper guide half way in between

I am working on a 4 piece fly blank casting rod that is 9 feet #9 weight that I will simple spiral wrap.
Upon static testing and bending the blank, the transition guide rides downward into a more extreme position. I was wondering if I should leave it in the extreme position it takes when it's under a heavy load, the normal 90 degree placement, or split the difference?
Guide spacing was sp

While I wait for the blank to ship to me (could be 3 weeks) I've been reading up and learning as much as I can about building.
I have been reading into spiral wrapping and am thinking of giving it a go for this casting/drift rod. I already ordered my guides though and wonder if I might still get away with using the same guides but wrapped spiral style?
All are chrome frame with aluminum oxid

Ah, just looked at the Dblue website. Pretty close but still not quite. 8 to 20 and it chucks up to 1 1/2 oz. A bit on the heavy side for what im doing. Thanks for the suggestion though.
I believe I am almost ready.
Im going to get a rainshadow eternity 2, 4 piece 9' fly rod blank. Either in 9 weight or 10 weight (not sure yet).

I have a 4 piece 13' Shimano Clarus centre pin rod that is 6-12lb. It is very noodle and does okay for Coho but Steelhead give it a run for it's money and Chinook take me 200yards down river. Good rod but I think I need 10-17lb at least

Appreciate the offer but as I said in the OP I am looking for a 4 piece rod. That's the entire point of the build, which is why I was asking about 4 piece fly blanks

Hey guys. I'm new to rod building and was going to buy a mudhole starter kit or another starter kit.
I cycle and take the bus to get to the local rivers here on the west coast of Canada, so for me having a 4 piece rod is invaluable, and It's very hard to find 4 piece casting rods with any length for drifting with a float that aren't meat sticks (the few I can see are all heavy surf rods).
