2. Cork check
I'm using an Alps RA7 on a 6wt fly rod. I want to put a fighting butt on but Alps doesn't make the cork check between the bottom of the seat and the fighting butt. Does anyone have a suggestion for this or should I just go without?
Thanks

Thanks for the help on this. I'll try the freezer first then the epoxy. Not a CTS blank Herb. Though I have been playing with the Spey blank I received from you it is nice.

I snapped the butt section of a rod and it was a clean break at the female end of the section above. I'm having a hard time removing the male end out of the female section. I don't want to damage the ferrule. Any suggestion on how I can get the broken male piece removed?

I'm building a NFC 905-2. 8-17# blank. I'lll be using 14# mono. I am using the New Guide concept system and have a question. I can't decide on running guide height. The systems says to use size 10 but the XYTLG 10 is pretty tall.
I have the Alps XYTLG in size 6 but am having 2nd thoughts. The Alps lowrider XPFLLG in 7 has a lower profile but they don't make it in an 8.
Should I go wit

10. Turning cork
I'm beginning to turn my own grips. I'm using a burl cork with blue in the mix (Blue River) and a burnt mix on another. What I'm noticing is when I get finer than 120 grit the colors in the blue river cork or burnt loose the pop in their color and get dull or hazy. Is there a way to correct this?
Thanks

13. Top of rear grip
New rod builder and I just made a mistake but I think I can fix it. I would like to know if this is an option for me. I'm building a NFC Steelhead rod.
I glued on a carbon fiber grip that has the top to fit a casting reel. I'm using an Alps exposed spinning reel seat. The OD of the grip is 1.06. I can't find a trim ring to fit the top of the grip and the bottom of the Alps spinning real se

I just need some clarification on the correct glue for cork rings. I have titebond III wood glue and U-40 Rod bond. Which would you use for gluing the cork rings together on the mandrel.
Thanks

19. Cork thickness
I'm building a swimbait rod and the base of the rod blank is .69" and the outside diameter of the cork is 1.06". After reaming the wall thickness of the cork is about .37". Is there a minimum wall thickness of the cork I should have? Will I have enough meat on this? Do I need to go with and EVA grip instead?
Thanks

20. Spey
What is it about a Spey blank that makes it a Spey? Is it the taper, action? I know length is a factor. But what else is there. Please educate me.
Thanks

22. Reel Seat
I'm using an aluminum Alps single trigger reel seat with a Carbon fiber grip. The grip does not have any type of pre fabricated trim ring exposure. The carbon fiber just wraps all the way to the center. Should I use a trim ring between the bottom grip and the reel seat. It looks like it should but I'm not sure. I have one for the top. (Rookie question)

24. Swimbait rod
Another newbe question. Swimbait rod my friend, he will be using 50#braid which he says is 12# mono diameter. I'm looking at casting guides from Alps. The Alps MXN are for 12-30# line and the XN are for 25-50# line. Are the recommend weights of the guides based on line diameter or test of the line? Easier question is which guides should I go with?
Thanks Rick

25. Rod Length
I'm building a swim bait rod for a friend. NFC: MUH798 IM . Their website says it is 93" long but it is actually 95.5" long. Will this make a difference in the build or should I cut it down 2.5"?

26. Single Spey
Novice builder here. I want to begin Spey casting and build a single handed Spey in the 5-6 weight area. I have noticed a lot of rod manufactures have specific Spey blanks in sizes 7wt and up. My question I have is, How do specific Spey blanks differ (outside of length) from regular fly rods? Could I use a 5wt NFC blank and use it like a Spey? Is so Fast action or medium action? Any other qu
