I'll have to double check a couple rods in the shop, but I believe the last couple 'heavier' rods were KW30L, KW20, KW8 then 6 runners. The 8 spaced out and bullseyes better than the 10. I'll double check tomorrow and confirm.

Sounds like you're all set, but for what it's worth. I had a repair come in over the summer from a good customer and he needed the rod ASAP. Didn't have any see-through, but ProWrap Cool Mint (403) was damn near perfect.

It’s difficult if not impossible. A lot of manufacturers are using overseas guides with no branding and albeit similar they’re not exactly the same as anything you can purchase individually. I do a fair bit of repairs, but still come across some oddballs I haven’t seen before. Just be upfront with the customer and let them know if there will be a delay. If they’re not willing to wait 7-10 days

Just built a heavier inshore spinning rod and utilized the same idea. Have to play around with layout as it's not the exact same as KL. The single foot guides can easily handle the stress, but it's more the bumps and bruises from handling the rod than fishing the rod.
I went KW 25, 20, 10 to a couple KB6 then KT6 out to tip. Choke sits a touch low, but not the worst thing in the world for

Thanks Rick, I’m familiar with and quite a big fan of your guides. These are exactly like those, if the guide was flipped so double foot was towards butt, but angle was still towards tip. Very odd.

Working on a repair and having a hard time finding a matching guide. It is a reversed double foot guide, but with an angle like a Fuji KW. Ring is pressed in from the bottom, not top. All-in-all looks like a KW, but flipped and bent. On a Lamiglas Carbon Surf. Limited research available, but looking like Lamiglas is using a generic brand that I don't have access to. Any help would be ideal

Spoke with Andy from G4 who was very helpful. Process is spot on just recommends part a being a bit warmer. Going to try putting that in my warmer before mixing. That being said, did 3 rods this morning and mix had micro bubbles, but all released before getting on the rod. Looked mint.

10. G4 Finish Issues
Been trying G4 epoxy for the last six or seven rods with mixed feelings. When it’s good it’s great, very easy to work with great flow very clear very smooth. I have recently been running into an issue with micro bubbles that will not release. They’re not bubbles coming from the threads as I can see them after the finish has been mixed. Spread on tinfoil let rest even try some heat and the micro

CAM from Thrasher is impossible to beat for $30 in my opinion. Build a lot of their CAM 7' Heavy, Mod-Fast, 10-20lb, 3/8-1oz. Worth a look. Have caught scup to albies to big stripers on that blank.

Similar to Roger I find the Fiskars micro tip pruner to work a treat.

13. Re: Shop Layout
Thanks for all the ideas. Definitely going to have the lathe in the second half of the shop. In addition I have a nice dust collector that I mount directly to the bed of the lathe. Between that and a ceiling mounted air filter, I was able to keep my basement shop pretty clean.
I'm a HUGE fan of the linkable LED shop lights. I have them everywhere and plan on lighting this place up like th

14. Shop Layout
Hi all, I recently moved and with that lost my basement shop. Good news, I now have a 24x10 building with a storage loft that will be dedicated to rod building, tackle, rigging etc. It’s sectioned off and the larger 13x10 will be the rod shop. Plan is wrapping bench on one wall, finishing bench on the other. Part of me things this will kill a lot of space in the middle. Other idea is central b

Do you run bent or straight butts? I'm building more and more tuna rods without rollers for the exact reason Ancelmo mentioned above. I like a Fuji HB guide train and slick butt on my trolling standup rods. Check out thrasher blanks if you like the feel/sensitivity of graphite...Calstar e glass or Seeker if you prefer a more parabolic bend.

If it's strictly a jigging rod you can downsize the guides and the reduction layout quite a bit. What clearance are you worried about? Depending on who the rod is for and how it will be used/handled I'd be tempted to go single foot running guides and keep it as sensitive as possible.

No experience with those particular blanks, but have built 30+ rods on Thrasher Blanks. They are built in the USA and Jason the owner is a standup guy. I have been thoroughly impressed with Thrasher and built everything from light saltwater to tuna rods.

I wouldn't make a habit of it, but I've done it a couple times. Most recent was a 7' 20-40lb conventional setup built last winter for live lining bunker/eels for stripers. Used all last year and never once was taken out of the sun or weather. Lived in the rocket launcher rod holder on the boat all year on purpose to see how it held up. The finish looks absolutely brand new mint. The thread w

Correct. All too often I intertwine speed/action as speed describes action. I am indeed trying to slow the speed down as it will help with working the plug. Losing some responsiveness is ok. There is slack in the line most of the time anyway. Slowing it down will help with hookup too and avoid pulling it from the mouth. Basically I'm trying to replicate my 10' honey lam into a boat road. Building a rod for a good friend of mine as a xmas gift from his girlfriend. We fish by boat in Rhode Island and both have a full quiver from scup to bluefin so new rods are always tricky. We always have a couple topwater plugs ready to go and I want to build a dedicated rod. Typically throw 1.5 - 3.5oz, casting isn't too much of a concern rather find a blank that is easier to work the plug.

I thoroughly enjoy building rods and take a lot of pride in crafting rods that are purpose built for the reel, line, fishing style, etc. myself or the client requests. I always static test my rods, typically with the 2 line method initially on a new blank then use those measurements and minimally tweak when making multiples on the same blank. I've been happy with the results, but always wondere

25. Re: Ramps
I mix up thickened epoxy, add some pigment to it, tape off my edges, and apply. I'll use a popsicle stick, spoon, etc. and get a gentle radius if that's what I'm looking for. Remove tape while epoxy is wet and let it set up on the dryer. I'll extend the transition past the epoxy when wrapping with thread then finish epoxy over everything.
