I do it before so that way it is exactly in the center after its turned. I have ran into several issues doing it after the fact.

Make sure you read the evaluation criteria of the competition before you comment on what the judges look at. The blank you are given comes with no information. Therefore, a builder must go through the steps of evaluating the blank using the Common Cents method, or other tools at their disposal to even figure out what it is. To think that a builder would blindly throw fancy material at a blank

I have not commented or shared any pictures of my entry. Some individuals are very excited and cannot wait for the results, and that is very understandable. The amount of work, money and time invested in these rods will never be recouped by winning any of the three places. I can understand the issue with the ornate nature of these rods, but after all, it is a competition. Why would you expect

Mark, That is amazing! Something I have been thinking about since I started building rods. I would love to know your step by step process for entire rod.

I use Harbor Freight storage boxes. They are yellow and black, and sell for about 5 dollars each.

I have tried a couple different methods, but the both seem to have negative results from time to time. I have attempted to cut the glue stick into small pieces and insert it into the tip top prior to heating. This works best for hold, but it is a pain. I have also tried heating up the glue stick and putting it on the rod, then sliding the tip top on. This is the easiest, but it seems that the

This is how I do it; While wrapping the black thread, when you get to where you want the trim band, insert your gold thread under the black thread you are currently winding. I leave about two inches of thread sticking out and wind the black thread over the gold twice. Then take the gold thread and lay it right beside the black thread that is coming up to the rod. Hold this in place while tu

I use single stage automotive paint. I went to the paint store and told them I needed a flexible single stage. they had a line of flexible paint. I picked my colors and sprayed three coats. It is tough as nails.

Thank you. I tend to prefer the classic/vintage style. I have to say I was a bit nervous to cut a two piece blank into four pieces, but now every time I look at a rod, I can only see it cut into multiple pieces. On a different note, I found that single stage automotive paint is the way to go for painting blanks. This rod has three coats on it and once it was dry, that paint is tough as nail

Thanks for the kind words Theron. It was the funnest and most challenging build to date. Unfortunately I think I now have an addiction to ferrules.

I put my signature on a piece of scotch tape. That way I can write it flat rather than write on a curved surface. I apply the tape to the rod, coat with CP, and then apply epoxy. Seems to work well for me.

It was pretty neat to see my rod being judged on there. I was able to catch a couple photo glimpses of a judge holding it.

I am wondering if there are any companies producing jewelry grade spinning seats like they do for fly rods. I have looked all over for quality hardwood spinning seats with nickel silver hardware, but they cannot be found. I do not have the equipment or knowledge to build my own. If anyone knows who makes a true spinning seat that is as nice as a fly seat, I would be very interested.

I just wanted to give a word of praise to Perfect out of Poland. I ordered some agate guides for a special build I am doing. They are probably the best looking guides I have seen. Set in silver, they are flawless. The best part is they cost about the same as the cheap chinese ones you can buy on any tackle website. If you like to use agate eyes, I highly recommend Perfect.

like them or dont like them, I enjoy the challenges of making combo rods. I like the engineering of the handles and seeing everything come together. Fish will bite on anything, so if you are on a horse or backpacking in the woods, a travel sized combo rod might be right up your alley. Besides, I dont know many people who get paid to fish. Just calm down and fish. Dont be so uptight.

Well, the ferrules were probably the funnest part of the build so far. I bought a fiberglass blank about the same size as my two piece blank. Then I measured and cut 6 inch pieces of the fiberglass blank in a spot on the rod that had about the same amount of taper. Slowly worked them down until the ferrules overlapped each piece of the main blank about 2 inches and glued them together with Rod

After re-measuring the rod and coming up with the correct deflection amount, I determined the rod has an ERN of just over 12.

I did not have any previous information on this rod at all. No writing or characteristics. I am trying to figure it out so I know what to order guide wise, reel wise etc. I didnt include the handle in the original length measurement because I had saw somewhere else that the measurement is supposed to be where the blank enters the handle. Not sure if the handle being mounted on aluminum tubing

Turns out I did not measure correctly. The rod is a total of 75.6 inches long. It will need to be deflected 25.2 inches. Looks like I will be redoing it tonight.

Disregard the first calculations. I was not doing something correct. I placed the fiberglass tip section on the rod. I secured the rod to the table so that the first foot was level. The height of that was 35 inches. The rod (minus the handle) is 6.3 feet. Divided in thirds is 2.1 It took about 6 pennies to deflect the tip end of the rod 2.1 inches. According to the table in the simplifi

Thanks everyone for the replies. This is a special project and the second combo rod that I have built. They are quite fun to build and engineer. I downloaded the Common Sense Method last night and did some re-measuring. Turns out the rod is "about" a 1 WT. That is what I am going with. The rod started life as a medium action graphite rod. I then cut it into 4 pieces and made fi

I am in the middle of building a combo rod and I am trying to get an accurate line weight for the rod when it is put into the fly fishing configuration. However, I cannot find a conversion table that will give me anything usable. The rod is 6 foot 3. The amount of weight it takes to bend the tip 6.3 inches is 47 grams. This works out to be a ratio of 7.4. I need to know what weight that wo

I questioned a picture that I saw on Facebook, and I got a reply. The swell on the butt was achieved with EVA. Once it was sanded they way they liked, then it was epoxied over, smoothed again, and then the blank was painted. Looks amazing.

I have seen a lot of pictures on the internet lately of graphite rods where the rod appears "swelled" from the end of the handle down to the blank. These areas are very smooth and have a great transition from the handle to the blank. I am just wondering if anyone has done this and how it is done. It almost looks like the blank was made that way, that is how good it is. I have no ide

What are some of the techniques and secrets for gluing small pieces of EVA together? I am trying to make some checkerboard rings, and the contact cement gets everywhere and sticks to everything. Just looking for perhaps a simpler way to accomplish this without making a huge mess. Is there a trick or some other glue that is used initially? I was thinking super glue, but didnt know how that wou
